Beware of fakes! Bought a box of boosters at the Berlin mart, inside in a store, was going to split them up with son and daughter and myself for christmas, but when open up a couple of packs saw some things that where not right. I now have 360 fake cards. The box and the pack wrappers show no sign of being fake, only could tell when saw cards.

Wow. In New Jersey. I know there are a lot of fakes going around loose. I hadn't seen them sealed in packs, let alone a box.
What set was the box from.
Looking at it after the fact, is there anything that tips it off that you didn't notice at first?
Did you tell the store yet?
What is the store, so I can warn my Leaguers. I'm in South Jersey too.

hey pokepop, its Bill Dougherty from your area. The box had no sign of being fake or did the packs. The only clue was the price. 1.99 a pack or 25.00 a box. The store is inside berlin mart near clam bar. They sell a lot of toys and lights and things of that sort. Next league or CC I come to I will bring them and show you

Holy crap!

lol world wide thread and he starts off with "berlin mart"

nice to know EXACTLY what he means

hey bill its joe from our league!

I've been going to the Berlin mart since I was a kid (mostly to hunt for transformers) and yes i can unequivocally tell you its LITTERED with fake cards!!!!

sorry you fell victim to one of those Chinese places.

For all of the rest of you who don't know, yes Marts are FILLED with fake cards now a days. I don't want to sound racist but its a fact, if you see a stand run by Chinese people, beware! you have the definite potability of being ripped off! (unless your after that sort of thing, for novelty sake or something) I swear it seems that china will pirate ANYTHING!

Another giveaway, is if the store is seeing collectors 'knives' or 'samurai' swords, and also selling pokemon cards, I'd bet the mortgage that they are fakes.

just beware when you buy from a mart, no one is going to see you real packs of MT for $1 each!

Hey Joe,

I was leary by the price, but the store was one inside and he had other packs from older sets and also loose packs that looked as real from the wrappers and the boxes as any store . The guy said he was trying to get rid of them and after christmas the price would go up. Now, to see the box and see it seald, it was hard to see anything wrong untill I looked at the cards inside.

1] It is a D&P box but cards inside come from different sets like power keepers and DF
2] Some foils are not foils
3] some non foils are foils
4]blue on back is off
5] some of the cuts are off

what did the shrinkwrap on the boosterbox look like? official PUI-issued boxes have the pokemon logo on the overwrap...

'mom

Also Bill, if you haven't opened all the packs, I'd like to look at a sealed one.

If you could put some scans up for us so we know what they look like would be helpful.
Also Scans of the cards to show us how they are fake.

Well, one bright side, you got some great fakes to use as proxys in test decks. Will your local league allow them for fun play?
We don't have Berlin Marts in our town. But then again, our town doesn't have many shopping choices.

the only thing I think is awsome about the fakes is the scrambled nrg from dragon fronteirs! All the "reverse"foils in these fake cards have a sort of GOLD effect to them, which, when applied to the scramble nrg looks amazing for some reason. Bill,if you have any scramble or dre fakes I'd gladly trade you for them.

I yeah and im writing this from my new itouch, hehe ... Itouches are the own :):thumb:

i did not save the wraper and can not remember if it had official seal or not. I did save wrappers. Some of the foils do have a neat looking affect and some have gold effect. The box is D&P and the cards are HT, PK, DF, Etc. As far as scans and pictures, after I show them to Mike I'll see if he can help me do that. My scaning abilities are out of service

In Pennsylvania I've seen sealed boosters with art of Holon Phantoms and Delta Species. The boosters looked pretty good. When I saw them, they looked a little suspicious like they had been resealed. But when opened, there were just fake cards in a fake pack. They weren't resealed, just reproduced. I've even spotted cards in a little box, about the size of a deck of playing cards. This version had a little hole at the top so that it could be hung on store racks, and it also had embossed artwork with a foily background! You find these kind of fake cards at shady little stores that sell stuff starting at a dollar an only going to a moderately low amount of money. Those stores usually have other bootleg merchandise featuring Spongebob and kid stuff like that. My TO at my last City Championships was rambling on about the fake cards. She pointed out that one way to tell a fake is to rip one of the cards to reveal its center layer, and if you don't see a dark streak going down, it is probably a fake. But I don't need to do that, and I'm sure a lot of other people don't, but that nice trick could help the people that haven't been looking at these cards for a large portion of their life. I noticed that the fake cards don't have the same kind of waxy and glossy texture to them as a real card. They don't slide as smoothly while sifting through them. My biggest concern with these fakes is people selling them on eBay unknowingly (or worse, knowingly) and then me recieving them and not knowing what to do! I think I'll only be buying newly released cards from people I can trust. Unless the card clearly has an authentic holofoil appeal visible in the picture.

If you see a box of cards for $25, you know something is fishy.

Oh, and PokePop, I haven't even seen cards sold out of packs here. What are those cards, and what are they distributed in? Are they just loose singles or something like that?

The rip test isn't really good in that you pretty much have to know it's a fake ahead of time, otherwise you are potentially destroying someone's legitimate cards!
Loose cards are just that.
I suppose they could have been in a pack originally, but by the time I saw them, they were being sold as singles.

It's really sick to pay and then find out that you've just bought a pile of fakes...:frown:

Anyway, i always look at the price. When you have something for that cheap.. well.... it's quality will probably be "cheap" too!

wow. i cannot believe that people still make fake pokemon cards. eight years ago, sure, i was often on the lookout, but now? i guess that it is sort of a positive indicator: it means that the game is doing well when people bother to make fake cards.

wow thats bad :[

I seen these kids at league befor using fake cards..

and i asked their parents where they get them from

they told me at corner stores and chinatown.

NOW i know chinatown NY sells fake pokemon cards..

so i walked around and i seen some which in my opinion was quite interesting cause they look just like the regular packs..

but you can tell there fake cause the color of the packs seem brighter than the original.
