TGW - The Rock/Paper/Scizzors Cards

I don't know about the situation in the USA, but here in The Netherlands, if players play TGW, they're allowed to use those cards that say "Rock" "Paper" or "Scizzors" on them.

I want that disallowed.

I mean sure, I can still do that whole thing with my arm, but my opponent doesn't. And I don't see that as very fair.

To prove my point, I did some tests with a nephew of mine.

First we played Rock-Paper-Scizzors 20 times. I won 15 of them.

Then we used the cards. I won 10 of them.

To see whether this was coïncidence or not, I went to challenge my sister. This time, I won 14 in the real play, and 11 with the cards.

I then thought how that happened, and found the solution in the psychology part. Its easier to psych out your opponent when you swing your arm a few times and even say "Rock Papper Scizzors" during the throw. It allows you to read your opponent's movements, which is pretty much impossible when using the cards. Also, the cards are much more random as you might expect; after all, you eliminate a psyching out part of the game, and its more like "Meh, I'll just pick this one", especially if its the first one in the game.

As such, I'd like to know if its possible to make my opponents play RPS rather as using those cards, even if the judges offer the cards. For RPS is a game of skill, much more as picking a proper card is.

It has been approved to use the cards, at least thru the rules team here (TC). When TGW is played, you must either play the actual game or use the cards. No use of dice allowed. You cannot force your oppo to play RPS if they want to use the cards. Sorry

You dont have to do the arm thing just have them choose first, then you say your choice. This worked fine yesterday at my CC.

I play RPS with little mindtricks. Everyone good at RPS will be able to adapt and not get thrown off. Example, while throwing, I say "Rock Paper Scissors", with Scissors at the throw. Prompts a lot of people to actually throw Scissors. Also, you can read a bit of body language and anticipate on that.
If you can't read your opponent that way (which the cards do), then the skill in RPS is greatly declined.

So you just want to be able to cheat so you can win nearly every wager? The cards make wager much more skill based than actually playing RPS. If you really find this to be a problem, just find everything that could potentially be a "card" or other resource and destroy it so your opponents are forced to allow you to do what you want. Happy now princess?

And that is the exact reason PTOs, HJs and TC wanted one option to allow those that wanted to play the cards, to play them.....to avoid "mindtricks" or "gamesmanship" on possibly late/questionable throws. I've told players at my events, 1st time there is a question on the play of RPS, then they go to cards for the rest of the day. I'm a PTO and a Judge, not a babysitter on a match! You may want to review the SotG and the professor canons again!

RPS is actually a game of skill, and it is not hard to win at it if you are observant. I disagree with the RPS cards because it gets rid of the skill that is involved to win consistently. I also do not see why you cannot force your opponent to play RPS if they want to use the cards. You played the card, so it should be your choice.

i dont think its cheating, its part of the skill. i mean heres a case:

"i call paper" (sarcastically)
"ok then" *plays rock, thinking he would not use paper*
"wow, you fell for it" *played paper*

so many. the cards are cool, long as you dont randomize what you pick. once i played using my hands against nick c's cards, it was funny.

You can do that while using the cards. They don't eliminate that type of play.

Also, the "mind games" scipio describes do not descend to the level of cheating.
Cheating, IMO, would only be a late throw. Other psycological tricks are fair game in RPS.
Yes, you may lose some of those mind games with the use of the cards, but not all of them.

The cards have been designated by PUI, not by TC. While the members of Team Compendium are also members of the Rules Team, it is that co-membership with representitives from PUI/POP that is crucial to making the rulings official.
We have no authority to declare anything without the sanction and input of Pokemon USA, PCL, or POP.
In the case of RPS cards, Mike Liesik of POP has ruled that the cards are allowed to be substituted.

Funny how no less as 3 people accuse me of cheating. I'd cheat if I made my throw about half a second later as my opponent, or quickly change my throw. Mindtricks are a part of RPS people. If you can't cope with them then what are you doing playing it?

Lawman, how about that proffessor value of Trust before Suspicion? Yeah. Waliken, Blaziken, you guys fail for accusing me of cheating while I just employ RPS tactics.

Ask any Japanese RPS player. They'll agree with me.

But soit, if the ruling is made at that level (which I did not know), then so be it. Another part of skill eliminated/made less game-influent in order to promote random luck.

Also, just for laughs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wV0B3maUK0E

The cards aren't random as you can do the exact same thing. You can still attempt to read your opponent especially if you tie once or twice. The fact that you lose more when you use the cards doesn't mean that there is less skill involved, it just means that you're better at physically playing RPS.

Scipio: I never accused YOU of cheating. Reread my post. I said the possible use of late throws, etc. Also, we use the "Rock (hand motion) Paper (motion) Scissors (motion) throw------>Choice.

I guess anyone questioning why a choice to use cards, which is legal (and eliminate your perceived advantage) is the reason I said review the SotG and Prof. canons again.

Note that POP did not allow dice or other random methods to be used. They do wish there to be a skill level to this game within the game.

Cards ftw!

Seriously, if you're relying on psychological mumbo-jumbo just to win RPS in a Pokemon game, there's something wrong with you...

I think TGW is originally designed so that both players have equal chances of gettting 6 cards. But I never use the cards only if my opponents wants that desperately.

Excuse me? That's just how RPS works. Are you saying you should intentionally just blind throw and leave it up to luck? Why not just high roll for it then?

Because RPS is in fact a game of skill and that involves psychology and the ability to read people.
