i see post about how absol beaing broken and should be banned..

then i see a posts about a sneasel?? i looked up all the genesis sneasel and i found nothing that was broken about it.. i havent been playing long so, anyone mind filling the gaps for me??

beat up does 20 times the amount of pokemon in play(you flip a coin for each and it does 20x the heads) It took 3 energy. Back then there was only special dark. The pokemon back then had low hp. Sneasel is a basic. Put 2 and 2 together.

I think it takes two energy to use that attack. But anyway, I never saw what was so amazing myself (in a modern perspective).

Just take a look at the English Slowking from Neo Genesis, and then you'll REALLY know what broken is .

Sneasel was a basic with low HP, but for 2 Dark (Rainbow was legal also you could do a lot of damage. Compared to the Pokemon back then, it pretty much OHKO'd all pokemon in the format. Slowking was insane. Both arent banned in Unlimited. But they were the only 2 cards ever to be Banned in Pokemon.

Birthday's Pikachu was banned. I collect Banned cards and I have Ancient Mew and Slowking.
Anyway, apparently Sneasel owned Worlds in Japan and so they banned it.

It was banned from the (then) Modified Format because you could put 4 Special Darkness Energy cards, 4 Rainbow Energy, & 4 Sneasels into your deck and you were good to go. Plus the counters to it (Energy Removal, Fossil Ditto) were not in the format.

Average 60 damage for 2 energy at the time was insane......

Since Slowking is mentionned, I read it was wrongly translated but what would the correct translation have been?

If Slowking is your active Pokemon + Mind Games Text.

Anyone knows in what format Sneasel was Banned? Neo-On?

It was the Neo format.

And Slowking was not incorrectly translated. It was done that way to counter Trainérmon.

Trainermon was the shift in pokemon deck building that took the focus away from the pokemon and moved it onto the trainer selection and combonation. At least that's how I've always heard it explained.

Slowking is busted, plain and simple. Coin flips for all trainers, and if they fail they return to the top of the opponents deck. so not only is their card not used, it is now between them and another more useful card.

Sneasel takes 2 dark 20 times the the number of YOUR pokemon in play, not all pokemon in play.

Every so often a thread gets started about unlimited cards being banned and such. Birthday pikachu is legal in unlimited, however "_____'s Pikachu" counts as a card name. So does "Bill's Pikachu" so if you really wanted to, you can run as many as you want, if you have no more than 4 of a peticular card name.

Ancient Mew is not legal since it is not an official pokemon playing card. It is a promotional card, same as the oversized cards that bounced around for a while. Someone did make up a translation for it though, not sure where it is on the internet, but I have seen people with the printout.

I don't think WoTC ever officially came out and said "Yup we printed it that way on purpose." But if you read the chat logs........

If you read the chat logs, they were trying to cover their obvious mistake, and make the best out of it, without having to errata the card. They didn't appear to want to errata much back in the day.

Heck, how long was the "play Gatr or lose to Gatr" era under WOTC? They really didn't seem to care about a balanced format.

Even on the dark 'plume error (Oh, I am sure that was intentional too...) they stated you could play the cards as written. (Holo had fire energy symbol, non holo had fighting, or vice versa)

These days, that poor little 60 HP Sneasel does not look that powerful in unlimited...land of the big water monsters...

I always thought Sneasel would have been balanced if it had a fighting weakness....would have made the tyrogue even more powerful....

Just my opinions.

IMO, Slowking was the only "Broken" card and that was mostly because of the mistranslation.
I don't think they did it on purpose. They didn't have the right to make such a change on their own and I don't see Japan wanting them to do so.
Nope, just a screw up, pure and simple.

Every once in a while I ask for PUI to fix it, but they have no interest in going back to those cards if they don't have to.

Sneasel wasn't broken anymore than Cleffa was.
However, each of those cards were omnipresent in the format.
Sneasel was banned pretty much because it was unbalancing the format.
Everyone either played it or played against it.

It's pretty surprising that it took people as long as it did to discover how broken Slowking was, though.
That didn't take off until Genesis had been out for a year!

Sneasel was very powerfull , it were banned for powerreasons and that says something. Try looking up all other neo genesis card an see how powerfull it is compared to those.

And oh yeah.... clefa :) talk about broken but at least it didt take out youre entire team in a few rounds but batling bandcleffa... talk about depressing.

hmmm, 2 Dark and I do up to 140 damage and I have no weakness, resistance to psychic, and free retreat and I can lock down trainers w/ Slowking.
Yeah, it's good.
