?Why is punctution at the end?

i was wondering... why do you put punctuation marks at the end (excuse my spelling...)

Think about it, you are reading a book, and you see someone saying something like, "I think pokemon is the greatest!" Now, you didnt know they were exclaiming this until you reached the end, so your reading it thinking their just saying it, then you find out its and exclaim. If your like me, you have to rethink it cause when i read a book all the words kinda disappear and its just going in my head (excuse my imagination... something people lack these days).

Why not say "!i think pokemon is the greatest!" the first, to show its exclaimed, the second to know the sentence ends or just like "! i think pokemon is the greatest ?how about you"

That is a question for our resident regining Australian National Champion, Jason AKA Jade, I hear he has a really good grapse of the English language. /sarcasim

FYI The Spanish Language puts ! and ? at the begining and end of their sentances.

¿Because we're not Spanish? At any rate, sentence-ending punctuation is at the end of the sentence because it ends a sentence. People usually take in more than one word at a time when reading anyway, so it's not that big of a deal to see that a sentence ended in exclamation! Besides, you can usually predict the end punctuation by the tone of the sentence.
 
i dont much care for the metric system.
it makes me sound short.
im 6'1-6'2
in metric system that would be like 1.8 meters or something like that.
it just makes stuff sound short/small.
 
^ haha, yeah... they usually measure people in centimeters though, and like a year ago someone in Australia asked how tall i was and it turned out i was like... allot of centimeters which made me happy... and i have grown like 7 inches since then so im even more...

Because it makes more sense to determine the end of a sentence by placing punctuation at the end than it does to place it at the beginning of the next.

Besides, changing a language like that is a monumental task and you'd never get enough people to agree with you.
 
^ yeah, i know theres no way its gonna get changes, many things wont that should be (not saying this is one)

But lets look at is this way. i say ?how do you feel !i feel great

The punctuation at the start of the next sentence mean the first one you were reading, has ended
 
Oh I like this thread.

Its a very good question, and ya it wouldn't look weird if it had always been that way. Thinking about it it would make a LOT more sense to have punctuation first. You wouldn't be expected to do something w/o first knowing what to do in any other context.
 
Consider this sentence: "I don't think punctuation should go at the beginning of a sentence, do you?" If we were to go with the OP's method of determining where punctuation should go, the sentence would look like this: "?I don't think punctuation should go at the beginning of a sentence, do you"

The second version suggests this part of the sentence as a question: "I don't think punctuation should go at the beginning of a sentence?" That isn't a question. One could argue that the comma should appear at the beginning of a sentence, but then your sentences would run together and it wouldn't make sense. And people don't normally say things like, "?Do you, I don't think punctuation should go at the beginning of a sentence"

So your method doesn't really work with longer, more complex sentences that pose questions at the end of them.
