well aside from the unplayable starts and stuff, I got screwed over in a whole new way never heard of before. I should of made top cut regardless of my awful luck, but this is what happened.

One of my opponents dropped after his game, at a record of 2-3. He said he swore he dropped right after the round. Instead, for some unknown reason, he was given a loss in round 6, putting his record at 2-4 instead of WHAT SHOULD OF BEEN 2-3 drop.

The judge said that he dropped after the rounds were paired, but how can that be possible when the guy said he dropped after his match, when there were still 2 games going on.

I had the same tiebreak as the 8th place guy (who went on to win), and that difference between 2-3 drop and 2-4 would of been the difference between me making top cut and me missing. So I got screwed over by the most ridiculous thing ever. Typical.
 
Its why I hate dropping. Shows bad sportsmanship to me. And if anyone even THINKS of coming with that taurosexcrement argument "But I'd only lose more ranking points", DONT EVEN TRY.

Either way, you cannot drop after a round is paired. Only with the Check To Drop option on a result slip. Unless he went to the table of his match, told his opponent "You win" and then left.
 
It was a conspiracy ag'st you, Kant. The computer gods and the judges were trying to screw you over personally/ end sarcasm. Really, do what you tell others....win more games so you dont fall "victim" to the resistance.

maybe if PUI installed the Mulligan system your so strongly against he would have won a few more games. GG
 
he MIGHT had won more games w/ the new mulligan system, but so would everyone else, so that wouldn't have changed a single thing.
 
Christian: I am not 100% ag'st the mulligan system, I just pointed out that answer will have to come from Japan and I dont believe it will happen. Likewise, if you get to Paris Mully, so can your oppo, so the overall results may not change. The "upper level" players (some in thought only btw), just dont like losing to "n00bs" sometimes. Sorry, it happens to everyone.

2-3 drop gives the opponents a 40% op win
2-4 gives the opponents a 33% op win.

these are then averaged over the six rounds so the difference will be slightly more than a 1% op win.

How much did you miss by? It would need to be less than 1.17% on opwin% for it to have made a difference in the standings. Also all six of the not-dropped players opponents gets the 1.17% boost. This will mean no change at all in standing if the 8th place player also played the not-dropped player.

In a single trial I tried in TOM the 8th and 9th place were separated by more than the critical 1.17% . Doesn't prove much other than the non-dropped player may not have made any difference.

That shouldnt of happened, if he dropped then that should of been applied. I think having worlds judges at states and higher should be a mandatory thing, and I think PUI should try assigning the Head Judges for these event.

I really am getting sick of having judges make poor rulings and have rounds cut way short because nobody is ready and they start the round like 5-10 min before anyone is ready at all.

Anyway, sounds like poor communication somewhere down the line. The guy may have thought he dropped himself after the pairings but got confused afterwards and said he did it before.Either way you're going by what the guy said, you yourself have no way of knowing what exactly happened.

Does it really sound possible that if you walk up to the appropriate person and ask to be dropped that they would decide NOT to drop them and continue with the tournament? I would have walked up to the guy manning the computer,asked to be dropped, and wouldn't leave until I got a confirmation just to be safe.
 
13.1. Reporting a Withdrawal
Players should personally inform the event’s Head Judge, Tournament Organizer,
or scorekeeper (if any) that they are dropping from the event. Tournament
Organizers and scorekeepers may not accept drop reports from other players
before double-checking with the withdrawing player in question. Players who
choose to drop from a tournament must do so before pairings are posted for a new
round. Players who choose to drop after pairings are posted but before playing
their match that round will be given a match loss for that round and then dropped​
from the tournament

If reported correctly and entered into TOM correctly you will see the player under the Did Not Finish section of the standings. You have about 5 minutes after standings are posted to inform staff of an error.

And my son got 9th in the grinder when only 8 advanced 1 1/2 yrs ago. Things happen. We deal with it. It is not nice when it happens, but someone has to finish on the bubble/cut line.

Would be nice if POP decided to give some packs (not a lot) to the first player that misses the cut, that might "soften" the blow of 9th.

I know this probably isn't the answer anyone wants to hear, since no one likes losing. Though, one actually loses more in losing than they do in winning. Getting the experience, learning new techniques, adapting, and evolving your play style don't come from winning. If you win, you'll just keep playing the way you are and probably won't grow much. You shouldn't be bitter, because you still had a great experience I hope. Sure, winning feels great and I won't deny that. However, I hope you were more interested in having fun than just playing to win. Fundamentally that is what any game is about, having fun. Just do your best, and enjoy things ^_^

I think this is where the root problem lies.

According to the judge, he didn't drop until after the rounds were paired. But the guy said he dropped after his match.

I'm guessing that there was a miscommunication that the guy was dropping.

I think your a bit biased Drew. Why should 9th place get something and nobody else get something? In many cases, the person who came in 10th place will have won just as many games as the person in 9th place. The only tip the 9th place player should get should be, "Play better next time, kthnxbai," and that is the honest truth.

maybe i'm missing something but how on earth is he bias towards that?

I must say that a few packs won't soften that blow as much as you think. I had something similar happen to me yesterday and I placed 2nd. It'll probably stick with me until I play in another premier tournament and get that out of my head.
 
I thought Drew came in 9th place yesterday at States... I could be wrong.

edit: My bad, he came in 10th yesterday at States. I still wonder if he would have said the same thing if he would have won the tournament. You usually don't hear competitive players asking for prizes for non-winners.

I meant for all premier events not just states. I dont care about the packs, are they nice sure, but I rather win the tournament. I got 10th yes, however I think that players who just missed the cut, (first one out) get upset becuase of bad luck in the outcome. I dont see how giving 2 packs to that player is really gonna hurt. I know a PTO who does this and it is definately a postive.

Chris - That is a horrible example, you got 2nd as you said, you did better than everyone but 1 person and you got something for it. I dont see your point.

Edit - I dont see how me getting 9th yesterday (I got 10th as I said) would of made me biased either, I mean how many states are there? Over 70+ including international states? I think that the other 69 9th place wouldnt of minded getting 2 packs a way to less the blow of missing the cut.
