I wake up early and meet up with my friends Adrian and Michael and head out for Mass. The drive was about an hour and 40 minutes and wasn't that fun because of all of the rain. The way up was not that bad, but coming back was kind of annoying.
I decided to play our secret deck we were working on: Magmortar/Furret/Slowking. Did surprisingly well in testing, and stood up against all of the major decks. Deck list in the deck help forum. I got to MA and tried to get all of the rest of the cards I needed to finish the deck. Soon after round 1 pairings went up.
I'm not gonna list names as I'm bad with them and dont want to leave some people out or get people's names out. So I'm just posting the decks they were using.
Round 1 vs Theme Deck
It was her first time playing so I had a pretty easy turn. I believe I killed her Zangoose turn 3 with Magmortar.
Win 1-0
Round 2 vs Gallade/Gardevoir & Claydol
I started with Sentret and him with Pachurisu. He called for family a couple turns, and then had nothing. I saw this and warp pointed a Magmortar active. I started spreading damage early. There were a couple critical galactics and such, and at one point he ends up confusing me with ralts and I flip 3 tails with my magmortar LV X. I retreat it for a fresh magmortar on the bench and continue spreading damage. Eventually he got a claydol out. It was just a little too late. I had already spread too much damage and he had a really bad hand. I go 6-0 in prizes.
Win 2-0
Round 3 vs Gyrados/Absol/?
Went fast. He started with Magikarp and me with Magmar. He attached and passed. I attached, passed and used Flare. He evolved into Gyrados and killed Magmar. I evolved my Magmar on the bench and scrambled, but I couldn't do enough damage to kill Gyrados so it killed me. After the battle he told me he top-decked the gyrados. Great.
Loss 2-1
Round 4 vs Gardy/Gallade/Gyrados/Claydol
Where did the surge of playing Gyrados come from? Anyway, I started with Sentret I believe, and I don't remember what he started with. I took the first few prizes with Magmortar LV X killing off a Gyrados and a couple basics. I have double trump card on the bench. Eventually he kills my Magmortar with a Gardevoir, but I stall a little bit and get what I need with Furret and Trump Card to get up another Magmortar LV X. I get it up and start spreading again, while he starts building up a little with a claydol. He gets up a Gallade and kills my active furret. Prizes are now 2-4 in my favor and time is called. He's convinced he could have beat me had he had more time, but I wasn't so sure. I already had a Jolteon * 10 damage away from being knocked out, and a Gyrados close to being knocked out also.
Win 3-1
Round 5 vs Ho-oh/Togekiss
Well, here it is. We run battle frontier specifically for this. So I should win this matchup, correct? We'll see.
He starts with Claydol, and I start with a Magmar and a Magmar on the bench. He goes first, attaches and passes. I go and do 20. He Roseanne's for a Ho-oh and Togepi and Rare Candies into Togekiss, attaches about 4 different types of energy to Ho-oh and does 80 to Magmar. I evolve my Magmortar on the bench to Magmortar LV X, and burn and do 40. If he flips tails I have a good chance of winning this thing still. He flips heads. Game over.
3 Battle Frontiers in the deck and not one to be found when I needed it.
Loss 3-2
In-between this round my resistance is looking pretty good. If I can win out in this one, I may have a chance to be the only 4-2 to make the cut. So that leads me to...
Round 6 vs Hurricane
I start with a sentret and her with a pachurisu. She calls for family and gets some basics. Fast forward a few turns, and I get a fast Magmortar LV X. I end up sniping her Croconaw on the bench for 90. She gets out a claydol, but still has bad luck. Finally she gets out a Gatr, but it's too late. By that time I've already took too many prizes and spread too much damage. It came down to me having 2 prizes left to her 5, and I used Fireball Bazooka to take my last 2 prizes by killing her Claydol and Totodile on the bench.
Win 4-2
Check the standings, came in 15. Both of my friends finish 4-2 also(running the same deck.)Even worse than the previous round despite winning. Got the same record as last year in states..4-2, and last year I also didnt get in on resistance. The most important thing about today though is realizing how well our deck really works. We beat many unfavorable matchups, and overall it just came down to there being way more water played in Mass than we expected. There were more than a few Empoleon running around, a few Gatr, and a few Gyrados all in Masters. And of course the 3 of us battled most of them. Tough to deal with.
Props:
The deck. It really is as good as we expected it to be.
Slowking. VERY overlooked card. Trump card is amazing.
TJ's for a good job hosting.
All the opponents.
Everybody who let me borrow their cards. Much appreciated.
Slops:
Gyrados and Empoleon. Honestly, who still runs those?
Rain making the trip a little tough, especially coming home. Thought I was gonna die.
