How does this involve a strong stomach? Granted, I can watch Elfen Lied without flinching, but still, animals eat other animals in real life and that's not anything anyone flinches at. Various pokédex entries mention Pokémon eating each other, no less. Butterfrees die after mating. Pokémon are often anthropomorphized to insane extents, but the world still treats them as animals.

What do you mean, "granted"???? If you can watch it without flinching, it simply means you have no soul. Yeah, quite a few times, a Pokemon does, or appears to come close to dying. Take for instance in Kanto, in Ash vs. Blaine, Charizard appeared to have perished in the lava. In Pokemon Heroes, Celebi almost died. I'm sure in the anime, Pokemon die all the time. In Rube/Saphire/Emerald, there was mountain where people could go inside and visit the graves of pokemon. There were references to a few HUMANS who had died in the series, too. The fact is, I don't think the younger viewers could handle Pokemon "dying". If they could, in the TCG, Pokemon would simply "die". There would be no Night Maintenance, there would be a "resurrect" trainer or something. But NOOO, Nintendo wants the Pokemon to simply be KO'ed, for the sake of our younger viewers.
