This is not an April Fools joke. The time this is happening is merely coincidental. If it was one, the joke would have been posted at the beginning of the day like all other websites who have made one. The background of this problem has some history, as you have seen with the lack of updates this past week and my messages about the move.
The move to the new host is nothing short of a nightmare. The old host has chosen to drop any technical support to me as my term expires, and the new host is super slow with anything they do - I bought the new account with them last week, and they STILL have not setup my domain.
But that's not the problem - the old host was kind enough to move my files and databases from the old server to the new server, and upon doing so, told me that they would have my account setup and I could send my "Goodbye Dreamhost" e-mail to the old host. So, I did. I told them I would move out by the end of the week (being last week, or two days ago).
Here's the funny and totally "I am not going to believe this since it's April Fools" part. Dreamhost closed my account today, which is why there was some downtime early this morning (yes, they did it late, but whatever). Once I knew it was closed, I contacted the new host to say "Alright, I am out with them - now can you transfer my domain name (pokebeach.com) to the new account?"
This was their response:
Dear client,
On this link --> https://panel.dreamhost.com/index.cgi?tree=goodies.mysql&
I dont see any option to backup your databases. Can dreamhost create a backup sql file and place it on your home directory. so we can easily migrate them.
Also can you please verify with your old host the correct database information that you have with this domain.
Wait a second... I thought you guys ALREADY MOVED MY FILES AND DATABASES?!
Yes, that was the punch line - they make me close my account with the old host, and did not even move my files to their servers yet. What an awesome situation. :/ This basically means that if Dreamhost did not save my files, then they are gone for good.
Soooooo, I contact Dreamhost and explain everything to them, and they kindly open up my account again. However, all of my files and databases were cleared out when I moved out, and they have no backups, as it is their policy to remove everything 8 hours after someone moves out (so they can make room for someone else).
I cannot even begin to tell you how I feel, as this basically comes down to that my entire site was deleted. I used to do monthly backups, but my laptop died two weeks ago (for the 2nd time this year), and I lost everything. The most recent backup is on an external hard drive I have... from mid 2007. All the forum posts, all the translations, all the news stories, all the "everything" is gone. Most of PokeBeach is gone for good.
I have considered quitting from the Pokemon website business for a long time. It takes up most of my free time, I get people who attack me all the time, and my college grades have gone down. While I do not want to quit at this time, this event may be my ticket out. I'll have to think about it over the next few days whether I want to or not, but at this point, I just can't take anymore of this trouble... it's exhaustive and takes up way too much time. I lost ALL my work on the new layout and the new system, and I can't make up for that in any way anytime soon. This all is just so depressing and bleak...
edit: there is nothing to be glad about here... unless it turns out to be a joke
