Yesterday, my son Charlie and I drove down to Santa Clara, CA for the Nor Cal Regionals; Charlie played in the Junior's division, and I helped at the tournament as a judge for Masters.

Charlie wasn't feeling his best, but he picked up energy when Lianne presented him with a chimchar TFG figure, and a constant flow of liguids kept him able to play. Lianne gave Charlie his Pokemon nickname, chimCharlie last year at Nationals when the resemblance between chimchar and Charlie was noted. Charlie played with a deck that didn't run great in Oregon at States, but definitely ran better at this Regional. Charlie went 4-1in swiss, losing only to Jason Chin (Charlie has never taken a game from Jason in a tournament, one day he will quietly celebrate as if he won Worlds, but that day still waits), and made the T8 cut at #3. In T8, Charlie won his first game, but lost his T4 game, finishing 3rd overall in Juniors. Charlie was very happy with his trophy. Thanks to Chris and Chad who helped Charlie with his deck.

I am grateful to be able to help out as a judge. I think Susan does an amazing job as a PTO, and I am thrilled to work for her and with such great co-staff. Kim Cary was the Head Judge, and he headed up a great group of judges. I was blessed through most of the day with no caution worthy play, which makes my day easier and more fun. I hope everyone who played feels good about the fairness and correctness of the day's judging generally, and my rulings specically. Sorry if I missed anything, or blew a call.

Between Swiss and Top Cut play, the staff got a little break, and Susan had a staff raffle drawing. I had no idea there was one, but was lucky and won a super cool back pack (which Charlie has already decided he will be wearing to school tomorrow) and gift card for Geme Kastle (be sure to stop in when in San Jose for a large selection of Pokemon items).

Charlie and I can't thank everyone enough for a great day of Pokemon; from our friends from Santa Clara's Team Invasion to friends made from all over California, from competitors in the Junior division to their parents I judged in the Masters division, from the people who buy the cards and play the game to the people of POP/PUI who oversee the tournament season and support the players with such overwhelming generosity.

In addition to thanking everyone, I wanted to say that the variety in decks played yesterday was a nice surprise. I expected to see either GG or Fire Truk/Mag/Blaze decks; but there were a large number of intersting varients, thoughtful techs, and fun rogue decks played yesterday. I look forward to the upcoming pre-releases, the new set, Nationals, and lots of new decks.

You did a great job John! Especially with that look you gave me before the first round started, pumped me up for the rest of the tournament.

I played both TEAM LA members... and lost, but still had an awesome time playing (can't wait till next time).

I was really happy with seeing more people from the Sacramento/Stockton/Modesto/Central Valley area coming down to all of these tournaments nowadays. We have to represent!

Also, gas price hate!

great tourney

was lots of fun, met alot of new ppl. play enviroment diff from socal since lots of diff decks.

congrats to my friend joel , getting 2nd.

maybe ill drop by in the future again.

I don't feel like coming to this one.
I bet winning first place in seniors made you glad you came, eh?? Congrats and good job, I'm glad you decided to come, it wouldn't have been right with out you.

And John, you did a great job, I'm always glad to see you at our events and even better when you get to judge!! Congrats to Charlie!!

And Ivan made a great addition to our judge team this year, he came down with Kim. And Dale was another new addition this year that I was glad to have!! Thanks guys!

It sounds like all you guys had a good time and I'm glad. I was a bit scared for a bit there tho. I ordered for 120 players and set up for 120 players and we got 118. I was wondering where we were going to put people if more showed up so I would say it worked out perfectly!!
See you guys at another event!!
