2008 Battle Roads or not? Got Points

Nothing much to do right now til prerelease . Well since milk is now cheaper than gas at the local walmart it got me to thinking. Will people play or not play in Battle Roads when it comes to how well they like the amount of points they have rung up this season so far? I know plenty of high ranked players sat out last year . If you have 1900 points and lose a quick game to a 1700 was it worth the risk? Kettler on the other hand put himself in a good position winning Regionals last year and then climbed the ladder going undefeated in Battle Roads. His reward was a trip to Hawaii. This year all the points in the World I don't think will win you a trip. But if your headed to Florida for vacation and Worlds is there than an Invite is what you want. So how many points right now is enough to stop playing . Who is and is not in position to sit out BR's . Does it matter, yes if you don't want to make the wrong decision and lose too many points? Thanks for all your thoughts.

I think that if your at about 1900 or higher you can afford to sit out Battle Roads. There is a good chance that 1900 will safetly make it this year. With less events, lower K-values, and more invites, expect some players in the Mid 1800s to make it. Right now the cut off is in the mid 1800s with a possible passdown to the make the number a bit lower. I plan on playing in a few battle roads to figure out what deck I would like and to hopefully move up just a small bit. If I gain a total of 10 points in BRs I would be happy.

I disagree entirely.

This is not 2007. There are no trips associated with Ratings Points.

There is the right to play at Worlds (which if that is all that you want, so be it)

The battle roads ratings point impact for a good player will be minimal, but what will not be minimal is the chance that the players will have to test the decks in the new set envio to see what works and what does not in an competitive envio (for those of you that play in competitive envios )

Those that sit out may rely on the few days before nationals, and their playtesting to get themselves ready, but sitting out hurts your chances of fully getting ready, esp in the younger age groups.

You lose a little bit of the "edge"

I am encouraging all my players to play, juniors, seniors and masters to get ready for Nats, which is where the big prizes lie.

If you plan on playing all the swiss rounds of nationals, I don't see why you would skip battle roads. They are a lesser risk than nationals and an additional opportunity to earn points.

At first I thought I wouldn't play, but then I got to thinking about it, and have chosen to do so. Yes, I'm at a point right now where every little point counts, but, even still, as much as I'd like to go to Worlds, if the game isn't for fun, why play?

Exactly, I want to play as much as I can, I can think of no reason why I would not want to play... Even if playing cost me the opportunity to play in worlds I would still risk it, after all there is allways the ginder, and if you cant Grind in so what, you still had annother opportunity to play.

I will still be going to A-Kon Battle Roads Don't Worry Mike (David's Confused PokeDad)
5 hr drive and 300 miles for a battle roads!
I think I broke the most miles driven for a battle road (maybe)

Meg's right to say that 2007 is a completely different animal than 2008. It's a shame that I use material advantages of dropping/playing to prove my point, because it makes me look like I play for material purposes...But when you analyze the issue practically, sitting out one event is not a big deal under the right circumstances.

2007: ask most sane people if they would sit out an event such as nationals for a free Hawaii trip (read: EXPENSIVE)...And well, let's just say that it's stupid to let your ego override your judgment.

2008: ask most sane people if they would sit out an event such as nationals for only an invite...What would they say? Probably not much when you tell them that the top prize at nationals is $5,000/a free trip.

So no matter how much you love the game, when it comes to one measly event in your entire playing history, it doesn't hurt to do a cost-benefit analysis. Well, I did my cost-benefit analysis months ago, and it's 100% obvious to me that dropping 2008 Nationals is a horrible move. With how easily accessible the grinder is this year/how much easier it will be to earn a grinder invite, taking the "risk" of just playing and kicking butt is good stuff.

That was very wise advice for Nationals cause that will be like Shiny toy g at Le Disco. But with the case of Battle Roads and risking losing 20 points to gain 4. Whats up with that?

Well that goes back to playing in general. Almost nobody other than Paul Johnston has clinched an invite this season, so if you feel confident, then Battle roads are a perfect opportunity to build up/extend a lead.

we thought the same thing at our house, to play or not to play, and we have decided to let the Matthew play, even at 1877.98-- he should do fine and then be ready for Nats and Worlds...to get better, you have to play and playtest as often as possible..jmo....:thumb:

I'm a bit on the fence right now, sitting at 1841. Most likely what I'll do is sit out until theres a semi-defined metagame, and act accordingly from there. The first week or two will just be too random for me.

Which is the perfect time to actually play. If there is no defined metagame, you can take the 3 days (Wensday/Thursday/Friday) plus the days you know of the cards on APPR, playtest and use it to win the first weekend of BRs. It makes it difficult to predict what you will face, but with enough playtesting, you should be fine, especially if your a decent player. :thumb:

I feel the same wayat 1846, but since I'm not playing at Nats, I'm gonna need these points, so BR, here I come~!

Does not look like to many sat out. We missed one that we would have liked to have made but didn't work out. With something like 10-1 David is sitting at 1880. He would like to get into the 1900 club before Nationals and then sit out the rest of the BR's . With 4 left he could make it but one more big loss could keep him out. The best part is he is having fun . So how have you be doing with your decisions?

I chose to play. I have won both events going 10-1. I expect to go up about 15-20 points from the two of them. Only one has been uploaded and I gained 6.99 for going 4-0. So, overall I made a really good choice to play.
