Dealing with the depressed

Muscovy Level X

My 10 year old sister is currently effected by major depression. She is crabby all the time, and her mood changes on a dime. She goes from yelling to acting like a happy little kid in seconds, then goes back again. She is losing/has lost most of her friends because either she feels the are beeing mean to her, or she is too moody with them (everything is blown out of proportion for her).
Our whole family has a history of depression (mostly mild, but it's definatly there). She is getting some help, but not much is avaliable.

So now I ask those who have lived with someone depressed (particulary someone around 10), how can it be dealt with at home? Around here, she's like a live hand grenade. Everyone has no patience for anything, which is a problem when someone is firing trouble every which way. So how can you live with it? Has anyone been in the same boat?

It sounds a lot more like puberty than depression. I don't have any sisters but I have an older brother and 2 younger ones. When they were 11-12 they were a lot like your sister is.

She's going through that to, but psychologists have confirmed there is depression.

Maybe she's emo. I have an idea though. I am also like that and that is because I am not happy a lot of the time. Maybe you could do some things for her that would cheer her up and make her happy.

Get her treatment as soon as possible. Get her in consouling. Most of all, her family and friends need to be there for her.

Wow, your first and second sentences made me lol... anyways....

Sorry to hear your situation. Well, I assume they have her all drugged up? Well on the commercials they always say that the drugs can make symptoms worse. Maybe cut her off of those? Good luck.

That's what we're trying. She is seeing a councilor, but it really isn't hepling.
She's been like that since September, but it was only about February we actualy started to deal with it.

There are drugs now too? What is the world now? Fourth Graders in Rehab?

...and she's....10? Wow, that sucks. My advice is to hang out with her, maybe get her into some activities. I went through that stage too at around that age. My mom signed me up for acting classes and now i feel better after a couple of years.

That sounds a lot more like Manic Depression or Bipolar disorder to me. Is she on any sort of medication by any chance? We're working with limited information from you, so there's a lot that should be learned. She might be starting puberty, which almost always amplifies symptoms like this. Snapping back at her when she snaps at you is a bad idea. It can usually make things worse. I went through some depression problems a couple times in college. I visited a counselor and got meds for a while. The only thing i noticed about the medication, is that they only work for a while, and then they start making things worse again.

and to Mew*-You cannot just cut someone off those meds. You essentially become addicted to them, and have to ease off them. If not, you go through some terrible withdrawals. Trust me, I know this from experience, and it was terrible.

My dad's side of the famoly does have bipolar. But the puberty is magnifying things.
And she isn't on medication (my mom is under the impressing that it won't work). We are doing things for it (for a while we tried to pretend nothing as wrong). I basicly posted this to get advice on how to put up with it, because the rule in our hose right now is "treat her nicley, take everything she says, and let me yell when she bugs me". Obviously it's driving me up the wall.

Believe it or not, medication can work. But everyone is different, and everyone deals with medication in different ways. I've been on Celexa, ad Effexor. I would not wish effexor on my worst enemy. Celexa was great. Minimal side effects, easy to get off of, and made me feel a lot better. Effexor was something that was supposed to help my with concentration too. But it ended up turning me into an emotional basketcase, and would make me cry at the drop of a hat. My boyfriend (Naki Feralkin) can vouch for this one. He put up with it for a long time, until i weaned myself off the meds. But then I suffered through some of the worst headaches in my life. I was dizzy, in pain, etc. The withdrawal I had from effexor wasn't worth it.

You may need for the entire family to attend counseling with her. That way, she knows that you support her and she isnt going thru this alone. It can be a very scary time for her also. Be as supportive of her and each other as possible. The rest of you can "vent" when she isnt around, awake, etc.

Follow the recommendations of the counselor. If they want to try Meds, the family needs to follow the regimen and report back the changes/effects to the Dr.

Good luck.....mental illnesses are difficult to deal with and depression is a form of mental illness.

Dont sound like depression to me.

Depression is something I thought was always in the mind, I had it at one point for a couple months where I felt like I was going to fall down and die anytime, you feel like your going to be sick but realize its only in the mind, you lose your appetite some, luckily I was able to realize what I had and knew I had to move on past it without medication, worked.

But at 10 years old? sounds more like ADHD.

I guess the medical professionals who diagnosed her were wrong...

Hm. All I can say is, to help the situation, be her best friend. Start her playing pokemon if need be and let her win some games. Progress through the game together. She just might need some activities and someone to do them with to be happy. Maybe Pokemon, or sports? board games? I dunno what 10 year olds are into these days lol.

As previously mentioned, she's just staring puberty so it's not gonna be easy if she does actually have bipolar.

All the best for you and you sister :)

Or she could be bipolar. Bipolar partly is massive mood swings, so that could explain that.
