Given that the cost of a round trip airfare trip and hotel stay from Ontario, Canada to British Columbia, Canada would come to well over $1000, this is a rather generous gift. Here's an edited copy (to conceal the identity of the innocent :lol:) of the email I received today:

"Ontario Professors

With the closing of our Pokemon season on it the Georgetown Pokemon Leauge (i.e. Janice and Terry K) decided that we wanted to do something special to close out the 2007/8 season. As a result we decided to hold an Unsanctioned tournament in the format of the Professors Cup to allow the winner a paid airfare and hotel room to the Nationals in Vancouver. I have attached the tournament rules. Paul A. and Matt K. will be judging the competation and I will be acting as the TO. We look forward to you encouraging your friends and league members who are eligable to write the Professors Exam before the tournament so we can have as large a participant pool as possible. Good luck to all.

Wow, it's really amazing the spirit of giving that is shown in this part of the world. It's too bad that I'm not able to attend Nationals due to an earlier commitment - though I had an open invitation to Nationals given to me back in February that I had to turn down because of it. I hope this event is well supported nevertheless, and I'll encourage as many people who are able to become professors and attend and play. Great idea, great philanthropy, great spirit, great people. Thank you Terry and Janice. :thumb:

Edit: Just in case you are wondering - Terry is here on the gym as well - with a rather odd user name! Just kidding, Terry - we all love Psyduck.

That is a amazing thing to do and good luck to all who participate and will see the winner in Vancouver in July.

Very cool. Hopefully more stores in Canada (and usa *cough*) will do the same. Sounds like a grand idea.

Nope, the G'man already cancelled remember? It would be hypocritical for me to enter this event just to have to hand it down anyway - if I had even the slightest chance of winning. :lol: Nope, it's better that the opportunity be given to those who are capable of attending and who don't have the means to do so, rather than those who already know it's impossible. I wish everyone there has a good time, and I hope it's well supported. I love that Terry and Janice are doing this for the current and potential professors of Ontario - some of which they may have never met. It really shows what kind of people they are, and I hope we get more like them here in Ontario.
 
what a great idea :)

is there any professor 'point' requirement, as in the professor cups? without one, you could end up with players taking the test just to play in your event, pushing out professors who actually DO 'give back' to the game :(

According to Terry, apparently there isn't any requirement for that and there's only 20 slots.
 
Yes Zach, you do. However, you can attend the Battle road that is going to be held on that day with your dad, and if he becomes a professor, you can support him. Maybe that way he'll be willing to help you boys get to Nats as well if he wins.

Now, now Kevin - be nice! Yes, it was implied that you must be a professor, but I didn't put up in the first post the tournament rules that were in the attachment of the email - which gives the rules in detail - including the requirement to be a professor.
 
... a MORE convenient thing to do would be to ALWAYS hold it in Ontario since it's the most populated part of Canada... and then having this in another province... but oh well, this seems nice too...
 
Sure, for purely selfish reasons that sounds good. I'd love it to be in Ontario every year - because I live here. However, to be fair, it really should be held in a central place. Funny though - central being what it is, the east side of Saskatchewan may be central, but it holds no pokemon players to my knowledge. If it was held there no one would attend. So to be fair, the Canadian Nationals should be shared between both sides of the country. I support that decision totally. Would I like it to be in Ontario every year? Of course, sure. However this year I get a taste of what people outside of Ontario have seen every year so far - no organized play after spring Battle Roads, until the fall BR's start. It's only fair that we all share the wealth now and then. This situation has given people the chance to see what they are made of, and Terry and Janice have shown that they are made of superior stuff. Many people from Ontario said they'd go to Nationals even if they were held out west, then once they realized the serious consequences - such as the actual price of airfare, they realized it wouldn't be so easy. Terry did something about that, and made people realize that doing his part not only helped one person, but helped the game. Way to go Terry. You were the first here in Ontario to do this, but by no means will you be the last. Lets see what next year brings. Sure, hopefully for me, Nationals will be held in Ontario next year, but maybe this trend will continue, and people will propose trips from these types of events from other provinces, OR >>>> maybe we'll (disclaimer here: we'll - as in players in general, league leaders, league owners, or generous persons in the plural sense, not singular, pointing at any one person in particular) keep the bandwagon going and work out something for World's to a deserving player - who knows? Only time will tell. There are many people who put a lot into this game here in Ontario. We've held events to assist a charity, and now, even events to assist a player to Nat's. With the right incentive, anything can be done. Terry started the bandwagon. Maybe we can keep it rolling.
 
It seems somewhat weird to comment in this thread, but I'm never too shy to share my opinions.

Firstly, thank you for the recognition for what Janice and I are trying to accomplish. There are a few things that I wanted to clear up. My motivation for doing this is twofold, one is to help level the playing field a little. For some players, like ourselves, it is not a financial burdern to participate in the National Championship and hence our season is still ongoing with the Battle Roads still meaning something as a set of tune-up games and our hope of a World's invite still alive... and if we miss here then we will probably just get on a plane and go play the grinder. But, its important to understand that the game requires balance. If its just the players with money that can "buy" there ways to Worlds then the game is diminished, we will lose talented and enthusistic players.

The second reason is a little more complex, but in many ways I was hoping to increase the number of professors, which in turn tends to increase the number of leagues being run (I can think of at least 3 leagues started this year by new professors). New leagues are the cornerstone of building a player base and that stablizes the game as a whole. It was for this reason and the concern over responsiblity for minors that pushed us to a "professor's only" format.

For the Texas crowd ... yep I'm the same Canadian who showed up at your State Championship, with both my sons in tow (only one could play that day as the other was sick).

As for Garrett's challenge to test ourselves and figure out the next step. I'd hate to see invites go to waste because of the lack of paid trips. POP gives us 12 slots and we should field 12 competitors from Canada. It might take some creative thought, but I bet we can get there.
