Penaltys for cheating

There has been a lot of discussion on the boards about players cheating at Tournaments. That got me thinking about what currently are the penalties for cheating? I am not talking about accidental game play mistakes like forgetting to discard a card from hand after playing TV Reporter, or shuffling your entire hand into the deck when playing Prof Rowan. I am talking about blatant, obvious, and intentional mistakes that when caught by a judge are serious enough that a player caught doing so is thrown out from the tournament?

Should such a player be punished for just the event that they cheated in or should there be more lasting consequences then just that one single event? IF a player in sports is caught cheating they are suspended and miss future action. I was wondering what everyone thought the consequences should be in Pokemon.
 
I would think it would be rare for someone to get blatantly cought cheating, especially in a larger tournament, like Regonals or Nats. If the tournament is higher quality, there will be hihgher penalties. I would be suprised if any serious players would be stupid enough to blatantly cheat, especially in a big tournament. Even though the probability is low for someone to cheat in an obvious way, if there are consequences, the player would atleast lose the match automatically. At a Regional or National tournament, probably be thrown out. Now if the cheating was a blatant show of bad sportsmanship, then I would think that there might be suspension from POP events for some time.

Something to add here. If you, as a player, see something fishy/downright wrong at a table, please raise your hand and get a Judge over there! There are only so many judges in an area with a limited number of eyes to look around. We cannot see everything. It is soooooo frustrating as a Judge and HJ to have players talk about player X or a play made earlier by Y and not one person brought it to a Judge's attention. We can only catch and remove the cheaters with the help of ALL the players!

My experience with catching somebody cheating is that if you can't 100% prove it, then the judge isn't going to do anything about it. Fairly hard to prove.
 
you don't need to be 100% sure of motive to assess a penalty.

A fairly obvious example was were a player was using a 64 card deck. I have no idea if it was intentional or not but the player was still DQd.

The slow play penalties are also blind to motive.

Anytime there is suspicion or accusation of cheating at least one player is going to get a Warning, or higher if there is significant evidence.

cliffs notes version: don't do it.

the opponent always has the *choice* to take the penalty prize, or not.

the penalty is still recorded and remains on the offending player's record...but if taking the prize would put them at an obvious disadvantage, they don't HAVE to take it.

and if there is any question if the offending player committed the 'misplay' on purpose, you're looking at cheating/gamesmanship, not 'just' a procedural/gameplay error and the judge should be penalizing accordingly.

Yeah, I agree. Generally what I see is:

Player 1: "Judge, he just drew an extra card when he thought I wasn't looking!"

Judge: "How many cards did he have before that?"

Player 1: "6, and he just drew 1!"

Player 2: "No, I always had 7!"

Judge: "Alright, well a warning for you, and a caution for you."

...and that's about it.
 
Personally, I'd wonder how much the player has done figures into the penalty. If he was a professor running a league, would that make the penalty for cheating at a tournament worse or better. If it was someone who had good standing in the community, would POP go easier on him? or would they make an example of him for betraying our trust.

Once a cheater always a cheater, if they got caught once, it's impossible to determine how many times they've done it before, big event or not. I say tar and feather the jerk, and if he's supposedly in good standing, make the penalty worse. The last thing you do is betray our trust in your status.

I found that Nationals it where there is the MOST cheating.

AMEN!

On many many MANY occasions I have had this happen:
Player X comes up to me long after the game is over
Player X: "that guy was doing so-and-so"
Me: "Did you call a judge over?"
Player X: "Well, no....."
