Breaking the Taboo - Garchomp and special energy

just a thought off the top of my head.....

i think one of the main things holding garchomp back is the unwillingness of players to make builds incorporating any special energies aside from the occasional boost. call energy would go a very long way to help set garchomp up, so what if you 'sacrifice' the first garchomp (who hopefully will become the level x and not attack to do damage anyway). is doing 70 damage really that bad? were going really expecting to always have the exact right basic energy to OHKO everything with 110? sometimes it was going to be a 2HKO regardless. same thing with scramble. if you are losing, doing 70 is infinitely preferable than merely stalling to attach another basic energy while your opponent continues to take cheap prizes.

i don't think sny of the builds for garchomp that i know of can support call energies, you need all your basic energies in such a diverse format or you need the room for darkness with weavile so i think that's why it's not played

scramble could work but it's better to just build a garchomp deck to do 110 the majority of the time

70 with no effect is not that good. 70 with a flip effect still isn't that great. That is why people switched over to the MD Empoleon the second it came out. 60 + power shut down is really nice, but if it didn't have that effect, people wouldn't attack with it (unless to hit weakness).

I don't feel Garchomp can be that big attacker that everyone wants it to be. It's too slow to build up, and there are too many ways to shut down the body. I feel Garchomp's future is in being a cleric and restoring Pokemon to do the beat down for it. We've never really seen a deck idea like that before, so it's going to be hard to play for a while until people can work the bugs out of it. Maybe it won't be that great, even after the bugs are worked out, but I feel it's the best approach for the card.

Garchomp, and a lot of the other decent cards in the format, just can't keep up with the insane damage pulled off by cards like Empoleon (MD) and Gallade (SW). When DRE/Scramble get rotated out (I hope they do), maybe Garchomp can poke his head into the competitive scene again, but until then, I don't see it keeping up with the big decks.

Garchomp is slow, but how hard is it to throw ina the X,Rotom and Delcatty, setup two garchomp and just attack for 110 a turn. I mean it dosent seem that hard.

Chomp to me isnt meant 4 attacking, hes more meant just to be used to use the LV.X

Its not gonig to make a difference with Kingdra and AMU comming out.

You could call energy and then retreat, but then you may run into the risk of getting another call and you'll have to play more Roseanne's probably.

Am I the only one that can play a good chomp? -_- My chomp is beating a LOT of highly used things regulairly, like G&G(Or plox, what eva'), empo, banette, mag(Who uses mag anymore?) Infercatty... Garch is good. On topic, unless you use boost, special energys just won't work in garch.

Your in seniros and most of the decks in the senior dev around here aren't that great.(sorry but its true)

A good Plox or Empoleon will destroy Garchomp, and beating inferncatty is nothing to brag about as the deck is worse than Chomp. Try running Chomp in masters. Oh you may do well for a tourney or so, but when people start to actually tech agaisnt you (yes people in the masters dev do tech) you wont win anything.

Hm... so, your saying next year's going to be tough on my chomp? I'll see if I can tech back. :thumb:

Yea a poke that can OHKO anything and can do 150 turn in and out is worse than Chomp??? Wrong

People wont have to tech against a Chomp that dosent have energy accel or no claydol,I wager,I win the wager,I win the game.Senior division decks are more than decent,Your not giving them credit because they arent in masters,DarthPika u should know better because of the statements youve made,I couldve swore you were in the Junior Division honestly.

NOT. I've lost wagers very early game, or late game, or mid game, or after an omastar, and I still pull through for the win.

I never said all senior deck are bad, just a lot of the ones in my area, and most of the players aren't that great either.

And Inferncatty is EXTREAMLY easy to tech against, and really isn't that great. -_-

GL with that 150 every turn... it's not gona happen.

150 turn in and turn out isnt doing it every turn, unless its late game then u can. I can do 150 for 3 nrg,2 fire dre or 2 dre, for 140. Come on,Ape is a solid deck, how can you tech against, you cant tech against every deck so dont even give me that.

Plox and Empoleon don't need to tech against ape, note even chomp needs to.

Actually, Garchomp is one of the decks I was most afraid of (after Leafeon/Sceptile and Plox w/ Dusknoir) when I played Empoleon at my Nationals. I even played Battle Frontier as my Stadium mainly to have a better matchup against Garchomp.

I know how strong and fast a Togechomp deck can be because I played it by myself at States and got 1st and 2nd place in two of the most competitive ones in my country (that was without the Lv.X form). It's really hard to beat if you don't have anything useful against (like Battle Frontier or Dusknoir).

Of course, Garchomp really has a big weakness to anti-techs and there are is a whole bunch, but if you have a deck without any of them, you probably will lose against a good Garchomp player, no matter if you play G/G, Empoleon, Magmortar, Ape or something else (Eeveelutions excluded because with Umbreon they win vs Chomp).

At my Nationals was a single good Rebirth Garchomp, which won 5 games in row and then only got stopped by Leafeon (where it also had 3 Gible prized) and by LatiLock-Plox.

About Call Energy - I would say, a classic Garchomp (Togekiss or Weavile for support, and uses the Lv.X Garchomp only as tech) never should play them, but with a Rebirth-focused deck you could try.

Since Chomp came out, I've thought that a couple of Boost were a decent idea for not-quite-ready
situations, but I dunno, even with ChompX, it's still just too slow. If you rip a quick Boost 70, it's
better than nothing, but you were already behind on energy drops, now you're behind another turn.

So, beats me, I think Scramble prolly > Boost maybe > nothing.

DarthPika, how could you tech against ape??? You can't tech against everydeck, its just not gonna happen.

Ape can beat Plox,Ape can beat Empoleon, the speed alone is enough to keep with either deck. 120 for 3??how can u tech against that, they'll either play rotom or typho/blaziken,if ure not stoppin the powers or the attack they can OHKO you have.

Ape is not worse than Chomp.

Garchomp is a monster. The only reason why Garchomp stands a chance is the LvX getting stuff from the discard, putting you three turns ahead of the game with Restore. Against almost every single top deck out there, Garchomp LvX has enough HP to Restore twice before dying, so you give up a prize to do 0-30 damage to all their bench, set up two lines, one Garchomp, one being a random tech, with a total of six energy, and all for no energy cost. Garchomp LvX is amazing.
