The Canadian Nats -- The Ugly Report

I will update later with a more complete report once I have the advantage of some time in the airplane to write, but after reading the Canadian National Thread, I thought that I'd at least put the basics in on the Ugly Family's exploits.

We had a horrible night trying to sleep in the hotel room, I assume Quinn and I probably got an hour of sleep between the two of us. Janice and Patrick did much better. I consider letting her play and sit out and look after the kids, but after an extra large coffee I think maybe I can put a coherent thought together and well those who know me know I just can't resist playing.

Through the two rounds all of us (Quinn, Patrick and I) go 2-0. I say wow, if we could just put all our wins together and put one of us through to the finals that would be great. Up to this point I've played against a Ho-Oh Rotom concoction and a GG/Cress. I probably should have lost the first match, but my T2 Kiss Drop (yes I was playing "The Deck" Zack) netted me 9 energies. He never flipped a tails for Phoenix Turn once.

Round 3 for me was another GG. I win. Quinn wins (3-0), Patrick loses against Tortera.

Round 4 I pull Kevin L. Quinn pulls Joey G. I win. Quinn Loses (it was close). Patrick wins. I beat Kevin for the first time this year. Yeah!! (he of course gets last laugh).

After the round Troy and I look at standings the "Old Men" are in First (Troy) and Second (Me).

Round 5. I pull Malcolm (playing the Koo list GG). This deck must know its me, because no matter how good it looks for me, he's always got the right counter. I end by putting him to sleep with Togepi three times in a row. He rolls heads twice and has a Warp point the third time. No chance I'm 5-1. Patrick loses as does Quinn (he's run out of gas and can barely stay awake after the round). His resistance is great but, I'm pretty sure he can't win if he can't keep his eyes open.

Round 6. I see my first Empoleon (w/ Bronzong) of the day. I get a great start and manage to stay ahead until time. I'm 5-1 in second place going into T16. Quinn loses. Patrick wins. Quinn is the top 3-3. Patrick's resistance is terrible after being paired down in Round 3, so he's the bottom 4-2 and they end 13th and 14th.

T16 vs. Empoleon / Bronzong (just in case you're wondering whether you're new deck would have faired better Zack). I win first game with Togekiss. I figure if I can't roll heads all day. Why not use the Toge-Tank strat. He should have scoped much earlier, so I burn more than 40 minutes in game one. Game 2 I play really defensive going for a Time based win. I agree its not the most sportting approach, but it comes down to 2-1 prize cards for my opponent, my turn when time is called. So I'm into the T8

T8 vs. Jerry T. EmpoStar

OK Three Peguins in a row. Karma probably. This is off-course my second deck and the one Janice has been running (and beating me 7/3 or 8/2). I don't realize that's the deck the first time. Game 1 is over in 15 minutes, he scoops as nothing is setting up. Second game he starts with a Helix Fossil on his bench T2 or 3, so I know now what I'm really up against. I get another good start, but he gets an Empy going quick, so I'm forced into using Kiss again (but with 45 minutes) this is not a great strat. He drops the first Warp/Start/Wager combo, but I know to save my Claydol. But I misplay later, missing the second Star drop and not healing my benched Mortar enough to save it from being splashed into my discard along with all 7 energies. I have 2 NM so I drop both, and try for the a rebound, but it's not to be I can't get Candy in the next turn so I scoop for Game 3. Now my deck abandons me for good. I start Mortar he starts Pachi. I get to Flare him a few times, but that's it. He's ahead by one prize as time is called on my turn. I drop the Kiss and pray for energy ...

I get ONE.

Game Over, great Game Jerry hope you enjoy Orlando and the Wii that my kids are crying for (as without a 3rd place final I would have been third)!!

Kevin is on the opposite side of the draw and loses to Malcolm in the Semi's. Brendan beats Jerry and Brennan goes on to beat Malcolm in final. Here's the T8 Tree

As mentioned Michael from Oshawa who was out visitting family won the Seniors.

No Eastern Canadians in the Juniors T8. :{

Hopefully I'll update with some more Swiss stuff later.

Major Props to the Tournament organization staff, this was really well run event. There were full deck checks at the start which slowed things down to start, BUT really meant the overall tourney ran much smoother. Hall decorations were fantastic. Steve (I hope thats right) onstage personality was really great and made things alot of fun. John the Junior judge was great,

Only downside. 3 hour time change and the most uncomfortable beds in all creation. OK that's Old Man talk.

Ugly out

Terry: What deck did Geneses play? Great job, you are getting really good. I am now worried:p I must find a MagKiss counter:lol:

Terry, just to let you know that Mike is not from Oshawa, he is from Scarborough and he attends my League

PS. Well, I would only get THE last laugh iff I won Nats, but that was not the case

Some of us were sleeping on the floor. A bad bed would have been sorta nice...

It's all about the perspective, people ;p

You seem to do great when I'm at least a 2hr drive away from you Terry =P. Congrats!

How about 4 people sleeping on one bed!

good thing we only slept for a total of 4 hours this whole weekend and me and Bidier sleeping on a mall table for an hour! wonder what people were thinking when they saw us... hahahaha

GOOD JOB TERRY CAN'T BE MORE PROUD OF YOU!!!! TOP 8 IS A MISSION AND YOU COMPLETED IT!

BALL ENGINE FOR THE WIN!

THANK YOU AGAIN FOR THE OPPORTUNITY

Congrats again terry, it was nice meeting you.

Unfortunately it was your t2 claydol and t2 Togekiss that did me in. Perhaps it was Karma getting "even" that allowed me to hit my first two pheonix turn, however being nationals I am doomed to rolls tails on my third, possibly costing me the game.

"I believe I have you now sir!" haha that made my day....until I relized it ment I lost.

Either way, good luck next season, hopfully I'll be able to earn my revenge.

Congrats on top 8 again.. having to face the only 2 penguins in the top 16 is just.. bad luck ha. I guess no matter how far away you're from Sean, he still haunts you somewhere along the line =P.. Good job again and it's time to get ready for Worlds =D

Did I really say that. Yep, probably did,

It would be a pleasure to play you again, I like classy players and you are certainly one of them. Keep building them novel decks, as I think I may have mentioned during the match one of my kids was playing Rotom/Ape for half the Battle Roads this year, so I knew what a dangerous card it was.

OK next year I suggest we have Nationals in Newfoundland and send Sean to Victoria, just to check to see if I do any better! You were missed Sean, and I look forward to our next match.

Matt I really do thank you for your help with both myself and my kids for this season. Unfortunately, I come to realize in the first couple of days of my new job that Worlds is going to have to be out for the Ugly's this year, major slop on Vacation Policy (don't qualify until after first full month of employment to take earned days). So all the best. Next year we are going FOR SURE.
