I'd be amazed if there were only one LA Prerelease at Worlds. Can you say, "wasted potential"?

We will do 5 small prereleases in MS, 2 will be done as team play events. I encourage players to stay in, but have never withheld the last two packs from a player that drops, I figure they are theirs not mine. Many of my players don't have a lot of extra money, many times at the end of the prerelease I will let them remake their deck with the last two packs, and we run a second one for free with the moified deck, that way they usually get 6 or 7 rounds of play in when generally it is 3 to 4 rounds. Sometimes if there is interest, I will let them take the extra 2 packs, use them as an entry fee for a team play side event, and then use the packs as prize support for a second event.

I like not having prizes, they just fuel cheating, friction, and many players won't be as helpful to a new player when a box is on the line. I will let a couple of players build decks early, then they are free to help and offer advice to the younger and newer players that don't know how to construct a deck, if there was a box of cards on the line, this could not happen. The net, that player that we attracted had a better experience that they would have had, and maybe we grow a new player.

So whatever I give away as extra is only done as door prizes! Taking the prize support away was the best thing they ever did for the Prerelease format.

It looks like there are two ideas about prereleases. One is that they are tournaments which should live up to that title with some kind of reward for its winners. The other is that prereleases should be a kind of "glorified league" where there is some play, a fair amount of trading, and a good amount of swapping of deck ideas/strategies, and a casual (almost in the extreme) environment.

There is a rewards on both sides I get the feeling from your post is that the only reward is a prize, to me the most important ones are that of a players accomplishment in winning, and also the satisfaction that they may have helped grow the game and attracted new players to the game!

Remember Spirit of the Game

The Spirit of the Game is composed of the following tenets:
  • Fun: The Pokémon TCG is a game, and games are meant to be fun for all parties involved. When a game ceases to be fun, players find other things to do.
  • Fairness: Games cease to be fun when players break the rules to achieve victory. A player should prefer to lose a game than to win by cheating.
  • Honesty: Players of any game should strive to act honestly while playing that game. If a player inadvertently breaks a rule during a game and becomes aware of the error before his or her opponent or a judge, that player should make the opponent and the judge aware of the misplay.
  • Respect: Players, spectators, and staff should be treated with the same respect that players would expect for themselves. Distracting an opponent or a judge to gain advantage shows disrespect to everyone involved in a Pokémon TCG event.
  • Sportsmanship: Winning or losing with grace is vital to the enjoyment of a game. The desire to continue playing a game can be soured by players that berate their opponents after winning or losing a match.
  • Learning: Players should strive to help each other increase their Pokémon TCG play skills. It is not a player's responsibility to make his or her opponent's plays for that opponent. However, discussing strategies, offering deck tips, or constructively critiquing game play decisions after the match has been completed helps both participants to become better players.

Should we play rounds until everyone has won atleast one game?

CameraMan, your rewards sound more aligned with what a league is. Not that those things can't or don't happen at a tournament, because they certainly do, but the point of a tournament is to find an overall winner of the event. If you're not going to preserve that goal, then it is not a tournament, by definition of a tournament. The winner of a tournament should get a little more of some reward (a pin, a winner's card like WotC used to do, some other idea) as the others. Otherwise, there is no point in being the winner, so a prerelease tournament is not living up to its title.

Some people wont even win a game. (like me) I mean 1 pack would be an AWESOME pack to me. :p 1 card from LA would also be agreat prize to me. :p

I never said that, we always have a winner in each 3 age divisions, we take photos, make announcements, sent pics to newspapers, we make them feel special without handing them a box of cards!

How does that sound like league, league is free, leauge does not play down to a winner?

Look no mention of a reward as a requirement for a tournament!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tournament

A tournament (IPA [tərnəmənt]) is a competition involving a relatively large number of competitors, all participating in a sport or game. More specifically, the term may be used in either of two overlapping senses:
  1. One or more competitions held at a single venue and concentrated into a relatively short time interval. Some game clubs focus on preparing members for such tournaments. Chess clubs, for instance, frequently employ similar ranking systems, chess clocks, and etiquette to those used in chess tournaments.
  2. A competition involving multiple matches, each involving a subset of the competitors, with the overall tournament winner determined based on the combined results of these individual matches. These are common in those sports and games where each match must involve a small number of competitors: often precisely two, as in most team sports, racket sports and combat sports, many card games and board games, and many forms of competitive debating. Such tournaments allow large numbers to compete against each other in spite of the restriction on numbers in a single match.

1. What does everybody think about the Pre-relase promo? (does this question deserve its own thread?)

2. Is Regigigas in this set? I know Heatran is, but wasn't there also another?
