40 min rounds @ worlds

It's been confirmed that for worlds this year swiss rounds will be 40 min each, and top cut rounds will be 75 min each. I think this is absolute BS! Why is the format being changed for one tournament?

We should expect the best in the world to be able to play under the same conditions that they did all season. Why should the best 64 players in the world need a break to be able to win?

Personally I think this has been done by POP in the hopes that in at least one division G&G won't win, which will allow them to generate more revenue from World Championship decks.

I believe this to be unfair to anyone else who has played a Premier Event since the domination of G&G began. Many players tried to find a way to beat G&G but were unable to do it in 30 min, why only now are they giving people the chance?

What do you all think about this?

I think that the format should have always 40 mins in rounds.
Is a BS that people is allowed to win by time, instead of by skill or deck. That a BS, imho!

Props to Pop, maybe a little advice would be nice.

stop whining Sar86

I myself think it was a pretty smart move on Pop's part
The people that were good enough at the game to beat out G&Gs in 30 minute timed matches for the entire season deserve this reward.

just for the record I am not playing in worlds

I don't think it is complaining but, more of why the heck would that happen. I don't care because I didn't get an invite *cringes at Nats being in Vancouver* but, it should be 30 minutes of Swiss, 1 hour best 2/3 in top cut.

Think about it. GG always wins with time. The deck loses speed toward the end of a match, giving other decks a chance to come back. But since the rounds are 30 minutes, decks really aren't given a chance to defeat GG.

l + ol... you really think it boils down to a money issue? It's also crazy to imply as you did with your second statement that G&G won't win as often unless it has absolutely 30 minutes and no longer to get down and dirty in. If G&G and, more importantly, the specific player behind it can't win because the game is going to go on another 10 minutes, that's too bad for them. If a person loses because in ten more minutes they get decked, benched, or have 6 prizes drawn on them, that's a legitimate loss. Did the designers of the game ever even mention timing as an issue in the rule book? No, because time limits are just a necessary tournament evil and they should never be considered somehow as intrinsically linked to game play itself. Of course they DO affect game play as long as it's done in a tournament, but by implying that somehow this time extension hurts how a specific deck is able to function, your complaint goes nowhere.

We should expect the best in the world to be able to play under the same conditions that they did all season. Why should the best 64 players in the world need a break to be able to win?

And yet you don't think the best in the world can function just as well due to a slight increase in the amount of time they're being given to play? And how is EVERYONE getting a time extension a "break" for anyone, especially considering that there are likely to be a ton of mirror Plox matches?

I'm pretty confident the makers of this game would be happy to see less games being won on time and more being won due to other things such as sheer ability to actually play a full game out, or at least a fuller game.

I also hope this change sticks for next year now that it has been introduced. In my opinion, adding more time can only enhance game play because it lets things go along at more natural pace and it allows games to reach a natural (ie. bench, deck, draw 6 prizes) end. The more you cut down on time, however, the more turns you cut out of a game that both players could've had, leading to all kinds of premature ends that could've gone either way had things just been allowed to unfold a bit more.

I hope it sticks. 30 minute time limits in this format lowered SotG, making people want to win on time as opposed to relying on their skill. I've never played any other game where time was such an important factor.

is it lame that the change happened so late in the year? yes, other players should of had a chance to play GG with 40 mins, but in my opinion, when it is THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS it needs to be as fair as possible and a deck that wins off time a majority of the time does not necessarily win as the game is designed. Besides 30 min is a tournament rule, not a game rule, so theoretically imo it could change per tournament, as it did, w/e.

There has traditionally been rules changes/errata done just before the grinder/Worlds, so this is nothing new. Plus, if these are truly the "best" players out there, they can play any format....right???

I guess when the players base starts many threads about GG/stalling/slow play being BAD for the format and something needed to be done and now it appears (again!) that PUI/OP has listened to the majority of the players, you start complaining again???? WOW is all I can say. I applaud this move. Very few games went past time on 40 min rds. (Usually just the games that had rulings/time exts)

40 minute rounds may have helped somewhat, but there still the issue of having to play against the same deck over and over. Also 40 minute rounds are not a universally applicable solution should this type of problem rise up again.

I personally think the World Championships should be decided by the best player not the player whos best at running the clock.

I loved the 40 minutes, even though I was playing GG, and the change of time was probably a strategic disadvantage for me. I felt so much more relaxed feeling I didn't have to worry about time as much and could just think about my moves. I had many great, long games at worlds only thanks to the 40 minutes. I felt like I could play slowly and carefully and still finish the games in time. I did have a few sudden death games, but at least these got to 5-5 sudden death games before time, so time didn't influence the winner. When I played Empoleon at nats (and several battle roads) with 30 minutes, I felt like I had to play at a very fast pace just to get the game in, especially vs GG. To not have that feeling (both from the extra time and honestly also from playing a deck that didn't need to worry about losing on time so much), made worlds much more enjoyable.

Why is GG a time deck to everybody? I didn't win any of my LCQ matches on time, nor did I lose any in mirror matches on time... I can't even imagine a situation where a player would ACTUALLY think, while building a deck, "Ahaha, I will be able to win on time often with this deck!"

Back to back posts merged. The following information has been added:

Also note that was standard 30 minute rounds.
