Nats 09 Location?

DFB, awfully close to a personal attack on someone with another opinion.

I understand why Nats at Origins is now near and dear to you, but trust me, in 8 years, when your kids start wanting to come and play, you will see things a bit more as we do.

Clay actually has a kid that does other events at Origins, my kids could care less. We could be literally in the airport with Nationals, and they would do exactly what they do today.

Play Pokemon

Run around like a pack of dogs with their friends grabbing food.

Go back to the hotel, hang out and swim.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

You can add me to the list of people who love POP/PUI/US Nats; but do not like Origins. I do not like paying Origins over $100 so that I can watch my recently graduated Junior Division son can play Pokemon for free. Costs are already high enough traveling to Ohio.

I don't play the other games at Origins, neither does my son. We travel to Columbus for one reason only: Pokemon.

If money is an issue for POP/PUI, I would rather throw $20 each for Charlie and me Pokemon's way and participate in a US Nats run more like Worlds. All Pokemon, all the time, without the (for our younger players) frightenly dressed players of other games. I don't even know what game(s) involves black leather BDSM/Vampire/Texas Chainsaw Massacre attire. Don't really want to either.

If having a sales floor is a plus, then invite Pokecorner, collector's cache, shuffle and cut, ideal 808, and the rest to set up in a separate room if they want to pay to come.

I am in favor of Nats moving each year, like Worlds; but I am okay with Columbus being used each year too. I just would rather go to Pokemon than Origins.

I expect that Pokemon will be at Origins this year. I don't like Origins, but I love Pokemon so much that I will try to get my son and myself there again this year. In spite of the Origin negatives, and they are numerous, Pokemon USA Inc always does a terrific job with the event, and we always have a great time.

That's my 2 cents.

I actually think that the no cap helped the event more then hurt it. 2 pods with top 32 each was AWESOME, and I really REALLY hope they do it again next year.

As for it being in Origins, its not that bad. Me an my family go to ceder point after the tourney, so its somewhat of a mini vacation.

If there was somewhere else they should have nats, I would say have it in Baltimore MD.

I loooveee origins. Tho , i primarilly only go there for pokemon, i also play yugioh and naruto so its fun to play in a few tournies for those. Also the venders are tight, made like $50 selling the sleeves i won in league, then proceded to buy me some nice swords, without getting ID'd. Also good( cheap) food. But next time we should make sure that the *** pride parade isn't right outside the convention. Not that i have anything against ***s.But I do have something against people who wear drag to make a social/political statement.

Every year we have this ridiculous discussion.

It all boils down to 2 things.

1. Nationals at Origins is great advertising and exposure for Nintendo.

2. To hold Nationals as its own even would be cost prohibitive for PUI.

Origins is mostly pokemon even they messed up they will probably not mess up agiain.
Without pokémon it is a sadly small convention.

It was good selling off many of my cards to vendors.

To point #1 ..who are we exposing the game to? None of the other major game companies are even at Origins anymore in any size to matter.

To point #2...you don't think Pokemon can afford to hold the event on their own?...Been to World's ever?

Origins is benefitted from Pokemon holding its event in Columbus...not the other way around

The Three of us that play here in Texas and usually bring a few others to Texas events will not be traveling to Ohio this year for Nationals. If they hold it somewhere else we will however try to make plans to go. If they do hold it anywhere else there could be no better place than Texas for Nationals. Not because I am here cause I would rather travel to somewhere I have not been for vacation. It would make better since in this economy to come to Texas. For the over 1000 People that would play try to tell me why not. I am speaking about the majority not the few people that live 500 miles from a major airport.

How about Chicago or St. Louis, if you're looking for a more "centralized" location? Chicago has two of the busiest airports in the country, so you can get there from pretty much anywhere in the country, plus local OP is starting to pick up again after a LONG hiatus. St. Louis has one of the largest and most active Organized Play systems in the country, and could probably carry 500+ just on locals.

Seriously, though. I don't expect to see Nationals move away from Origins for a long time. Simply from a cost perspective, it's far easier for them to run something like this at a location that's already set up for it.

Texas in the middle of the summer = melting death if you're not used to it.

Or were you looking for another reason?

Never seen a tourneyment held outside. If they play at the Gaaylord Resort ( minus one letter a) in Grapevine across from the Great Wolf Lodge Resort and Waterpark you better bring a jacket. It gets very very cold in there.

Personally, I like the Origins event. It has a lot of cool stuff, and it's something else to do to pass the time while waiting for the next round to start, or if I want to buy some merchandise. I don't mind Nationals being in Ohio, but I also don't mind if Nationals took place elsewhere. While there are some people who don't like the target demographic for the Origins game fair, I try not to think about it and only focus on why I'm there in the first place, to have fun and do good at Nats.

IMO I like it where it is, but if they had to move I think they should move to DC. I mean it is the national championship what better place to hold it besides Origins.

I attended my first nationals (2008) in the masters division.
I had few major problems.
The playing area was comforitable, tons of space outside of the playing area, and atmosphere was pleasent.
The only HUGE problem that i had was that i was overwelmed by how many non pokemon displays there where.
The organisation of the entire venue needs a MAJOR overhaul.
Some suggestions
1. Move pokemon to where the main entrance of the establishment is.
2. Have halls be seperated by categories
ex. all pokemon displays, all role playing games, all items (dice, plush's, exet.), other small board games, card games, and everything else.
3. KEEP POKEMON TOGETHER!!!

I personaly could not stand walking 1/2 of a mile to go buy a pack of cards after a match and having to run back to the playing area because of not knowing when the next match's would begin.
Also origins is absolutley HUGE!!!
I arived a few hours befor the tournament began and couldnt even find most of the things that i had wanted because of all the random displays (role playing, small board games and card games).
Also with the origins "book" i cant even begin to get into how usless that thing was with 800 pages of usless material. How about cut the book into easier more understandable sections? Also by catagories better than "tcg, role play, board games".

DONT HAVE A *** PRIDE PARADE IN THE MIDDLE OF ONE OF THE BIGGEST KID DRAWING TOURNAMENTS!!!

I am not against ***s or their choises but COME ON!!

I walked out to have a cigarette and saw 3 girls walking down the side walk with no tops on and am sure they where not the only ones. (i at the time didnt mind it but i know if i had three little children with me i would be very concerned!)

Last thing i noticed was the lack of side events. I dont know if i just didnt look hard enough or came at the wrong time/day? But a few free modified tournaments would have been nice. (again i might of just missed them so this is a shot in the dark)

Over all nationals 08' was a great first experience but needs to have some small changes to ensure that the pokemon community, and all others, are fully satisfied.

Do you think the city of Columbus knew there was something like Pokemon going on that weekend? You have to realize there are going to be schedule conflicts. However, I don't think the city would purposely do something like that. Both events had to have been planned way in advance. I just can't see the city being like "Kids are playing Pokemon inside. You can't have your parade today." You can't blame Origins for that one.

yeah the topless parade was okay with me... but if my son was there and i had to start explaining the birds and bees, and then the alternative lifstyles...yeah that could be a problem... but the orgins drawback is the fact that because there is sooo much going on, that it takes longer to do everything else... example duing lunch... takes longer to get my subway, longer to get up the stairs, down the stairs, bathroom lines...and alot of shady characters.
But i love the fact that on friday and sunday's i can do so much more than pokemon

Okay, well first most conventions rent out sections in the vendor's room so they have no control of where people are, first come first serve. Second Origins does not have control of what goes on outside the convention center. If you some people walking around topless call the police and complain. Third since the convention screwed up and let extra people sign up for Nats, more time had to be spent to deal with the extra people that shouldn't have been able to enter, thus the side events that were scheduled had to be cut. Forth, the convention tries to keep related things together, the halls are divided by what is in them and with any convention you will have random displays, and as this is a gaming convention people want to display the games that they come up with with the hopes of people stopping to demo and buy. Fifth, What do you mean "keep Pokémon together"? It was. Sixth, you have to realize that Origins doesn't revolve around Pokémon. Yes Pokémon is a major attraction for the convention, but at its core it is all about what games people play and the attraction to play those games with others that you don't play against on an every day basis is what Origins is all about. Don't assume that since Nats is their that is what the whole convention is about. Lastly, we do live in a country where people can choose who they want to be, so as long as they are not forcing it on you or anyone else they have the right. You also have the right to disagree with what they do. If you don't like the fact that they had parade then don't go to the parade. The City tries to accommodate everyone, so just because Origins is on one weekend it doesn't mean that no one else can hold something. The city saw that the two events would not interfere with each other in terms of location so they okayed it.

i no.. i dont want to spend an hour trying to type all of my responses but ill sum it up..

i had no problem with the parade.. just thought it was kind of akward

keep pokemon together means all in one or two halls

i cant even begin to put my thoughts into words on here because id be writing a small book

Ummm...

All of the Pokemon stuff was in two halls this year. The area for playing was in the Trading Card Game hall. The area for demoing and buying/selling Pokemon cards was in the Vendors area. I have yet to see PUI actually sell their own products at conventions (though, they probably should). Individual vendors were the ones who were selling and buying Pokemon cards. Luckily, there were at least 3 vendors within spitting distance of the Pokemon demo booth at Origins who were both buying and selling Pokemon cards throughout the weekend.

As far as side events went, we held a LOT of 8-person sides throughout the weekend, I forget the exact number. If you were looking at the tables on the far right side of the tournament area, you should have seen several people in red or blue shirts throughout the weekend holding clipboards running tournaments of this caliber. Also, every day except for Saturday there was a large Modified tournament in the Seniors area of the TCG hall, and both Friday and Saturday held Limited events in the afternoon.

Please, write the small book. It's ALWAYS good to hear the thoughts of those who attended. It can only make the entire weekend better, as people will both listen to and either agree or dispute what's said. Well reasoned discussion is never a bad thing. So please, write your book, and we'll be happy to read it!
