So recently I've become interested in trying yugioh out...but before I do, I have a few questions:

1. Is it worth getting into it now when there are so many sets out?
2. In your opinion, which game is better between pokemon & yugioh?
3. What's the average cost to build a competitive deck?

Any suggestions/statements you may have for a potential new player would be great.

Thanks!!!

Coming from an ex-Yugioh-ist.

1) It depends. Can you afford it, do you like the game, do you appreciate Spirit of the Game like in Pokemon or do you want none of it in Yugioh, do you like extreme competition?
2) Pokemon is cheaper, the chaps are generally friendlier and it's a lot less competitive. Correction, Yugioh is too competitive. So Pokemon, IMO. In terms of the actual game, Pokemon relies more on skill and less on "I haz better cards".
3) At least 2 times the amount to build a competitive Pokemon deck, although I may be wrong with new sets.

I haven't played Yu-Gi-Oh since Elemental Heroes, but trust me...it's EXTREMELY expensive. I think Lightsworn decks (one of the best decks out there) are around $500. If you don't have good cards it doesn't matter how good you are, you will ALWAYS lose. I have some bad memories with Yu-Gi-Oh...someone stole my favorite card...my Fairy Injection Lily...eh anyway if you don't have at least $500 to blow on this game it's probably not worth it...just get the DS games...they're just as fun...and a lot cheaper.

The game has changed from what it once was. They are making it easier to get good cards for your deck by putting them in starer decks, turbo packs, retro packs etc.. Also, there are cheap ways to getting a good deck. It depends on the deck you want to build because some are cheaper than others.

If you know what theme you want to go with when you play in a sneak peak event, then you can build off of that theme and make a good deck. Go to POJO and check out their gossip fourm and get info on what's comming out in the new set. Absolute Power Force.

1. It's worth it if you know how to work the system.
2. I love them both
3. That depends on what type of deck you make

PM me if you want to leaarn more.

I'd recommend strongly against it. It was big in 2004, but after that it just went downhill. The players in Yu-Gi-Oh are generally very competitive, and aren't very nice to people. It's a fun game, but as said, skill is so much less of an issue. Pokemon is really where it's at right now. YGO may be your thing though; just be prepared for a very different environment.

Wow guys, thanks! I guess it seems starting yugioh isn't the best option right now, especially with hg/ss coming out right now :thumb: lol. I'd rather put $300 into 3 boxes of hg/ss than $500 into 1 deck lol. Thanks for your responses!

Although to be fair, lightsworn decks tend to be more expensive than others(about 2 to 4 times more than 2nd best deck; zombies) but it has been winning major tournaments to prove its worth. Lightsworn is also known as the lucksack deck. Hence why people in yugioh hates the deck. It used to cost up to $1000 to build the deck.
Zombies is a skilled deck. 100-$250; most of the cost are for the extra deck; 15 synchro cards(lvx in terms of cost;10-40) If you scaled back on the extra decks then it is not nearly as expensive.

it is much faster; sometimes to its own detriment if you are not careful; deck out loss.

The deck self mill for the most part every time you use an effect on the card. It has 2 monster cards that it wants to mill; one is for defensive purpose and one is for attacking/swarming. It has a monster card that if it was discarded via milling it special summon itself. However, that monster cannot be normal summon. Hence it is a dead card if you draw into it. The other monster card stops one of your opponent's monster from attacking if you use its effect; after using the effect the card(necro garnda) is removed from play.
- draw power card. Discard 1 lightsworn monster. draw 2 and mill 2 cards from your deck.
- search card; mill 3 cards from top of your deck; search for level 4 or lower lightsworn card.
- one "boss" monster card, Judgement dragon, that can be special summon if you have 4 or more different lightsworn monster card in your graveyard. It has an effect that allows you to pay 1000 life pts to destroy all the other cards on the field, allowing for direct attack. 3000 attack power; it is possible to special summon 2 copies of it at the same time.
- level 4 monster that can once per turn destroy 1 facedown trap or spell card.
- monster card that can special summon lightsworn from your graveyard by discarding one lightsworn monster from your hand
- another monster card that can destroy 2 facedown cards if you normal summon it.
- card that can boost any of your light monster card by the same amount as on the attacking monster; ie: your opponent attack your 1850 attack monster with his 2600 attack monster; your monster gains 2600 more attack power via the effect of that card that can be played from your hand in either player's turn.

Even if you sidedeck against the deck, how fast can you draw into your counters before lightsworn deck swarms and possibly otk you?

However, the expectations from players is that cards from the deck will either get banned or more likely get limited by March, weakening the deck.

That was then, this is now. The game is changing. I can truely say that there are nice respectable people in Yugioh. Most of the people I play usually are.

Sounds like LBS...

Well i'm friends with this guy named adam corn and he won nats in 2007. If I had to choose between the people I've met in pokemon or the people I've met in yu-gi-oh, I would definitely chose pokemon. They talk a ton of trash, so very few of them are willing to play a clean fair game like the people in pokemon. A lot of players have learned how to stack their decks, because they are so small and a lot of the players do a thing called "soft cheating". For example they would draw an extra card, or summon an extra monster, hoping the opponent wont notice which is the equivalent of attaching two energy in pokemon. They do this because if they get caught, the penalty isn't severe, its just take the monster back to your hand. I have known of so many people getting their stuff stolen at all tournaments, big and small. So if the cost of a lightsworn deck or a zombie deck hasn't scared you away yet, maybe this has.

EDIT: I'd also like to add, theres not much skill in yu-gi-oh. Theres a ton of top decking and because of this the players are willing to cheat to win the huge prizes.

makes sense...from what I hear (and heard from actual hardcore yugioh players at Pokemon league last night), yugioh is pretty much if you like top decking, dealing with cheaters, and "not nice people". I dig pokemon...I tried out magic a few months ago and did alright with it, but the similarities with Pokemon just makes it somewhat of the same game---hence why I wanted to try yugioh. But if the response is overwhelming with people hating on yugioh, then Im down for staying with Pokemon.

EDIT: Plus it's too fun playing Gabe in a Pokemon tournament and beating him :thumb: haha jk

2. In your opinion, which game is better between pokemon & yugioh?
3. What's the average cost to build a competitive deck?

1. In theory, you's only be getting the cards you need and not buying a box, so this shouldn't really matter.
2. They both have their own charms, and I've played the major 3 card games (Pokemon, YGO, MtG) for quite some time. I'd say they're all about the same in goodness.
3. It depends on what level of competetiveness you want. If you're going for the absolute highest tiers, you'll run into ridiculous prices, but I've seen very good decks come out of $30 of singles. Still, you won't want to shoot for really high competetive Yu-Gi-Oh! unless you can successfully counter the top decks of today (Lightsworn, Blackwing, Zombies, Gladiator Beasts & Twilight according to recent tournaments [That said, some of those don't cost a lot, really]).

Hope I helped.

EDIT: I should note, a large portion of the relatively expensive cards are getting reprinted for $0.25. The game's price is dropping.
