Should I bother?

Ok. I only starting playing competitively and looking at competitive decks about a week before I signed up. I haven't had much experience in TCG but I did play it when I was a kid. Ever since I signed up, I always play cards and have a look on the 'gym. But I have a question. For the 2010-2011 season, should I bother buying all these rare, expensive cards, like Uxie X? Because that will be rotated out next year and I might not do good at Br,s Regionals etc. so it could be a waste of money. My question is should I bother with this year? Should I build an RR-on deck ready for next year so I don't waste money this year?
I need your opinions. I want to make DialgaChomp but I fear I won't do good with it and it will be a waste of money. I am trying to build Donkphan but my priority if Dialgachomp before it is rotated out. Suggestions?
 
1. There's a LOT of cards to be released between now and next format so no way of knowing what would be competitive. Anything you build between now and next season could be made unplayable by something released in the August 2011 set.

2. A year is a long time in Pokemon. Missing out on a whole year of competitive play is no fun.

3. There's no guarantee that you would be any more competitive next year than this year. You could miss a whole year for nothing.

4. You can still build decks without Uxie X.

5. Are cards REALLY a waste of money if you don't win tourneys with them? Winning isn't everything. Build a cheaper deck and enjoy yourself.
 
My son had some success as a Junior, but has for the most part played the game for the enjoyment of playing the game.

We have benefited far more from the friendships made, and the life lessons about spirit of the game, integrity and sportsmanship, than we have benefitted from any particular win or string of wins.

Build a deck. Play. Have fun. Adjust it as you can, or abandon it and build another. Borrow cards from the friends you make for a tourney if you really need them, you can play a proxy at league if you need to too.

If you win, great. If not, no big deal.

Seriously, there are thousands and thousands of players, and only one World champion in each age division each year.

I reject the notion that there is only one winner, and thousands and thousands of losers each year.

There are as many winners as deem themselves so, and the same applies to losers.

Realign you thinking, join the fun. I look forward to maybe seeing you with a smile on your face at a tourney this year.

as far as donkphan or dialgachomp, i ask a question in which you really have to ask yourself. How good do you think you are? in my honest opinion, dialgachomp is the hardest deck to play. as where donkphan is on auto pilot from turn two with some turbulence.
 
Ah heck. I totally forgot about the fun part of playing. I had a load of fun at the prerelease and have a load of fun playing at school. I was so much into getting all these cards I completely forgot it's not about winning. I will probably build myself a Donkphan as it is much cheaper than Dialgachomp. And maybe because I'm not as experienced as many players so I will need an 'auto-pilot' deck.

Winning BAHH! who cares? There are plenty of fun (and good!) decks that you could build without pricy cards like uxie x and luxray x. For example, Charizard is a good, non expensive deck. Who cares about winngin just have some fun!

EDIT: Haha it looks like you already came to that revalation sry!
 
Who knows, perhaps you will win with your Donphan deck. If you win, you get packs. You can eventually pull that "new Uxie Lv.X" card that is needed in every deck lol.

I really dislike this sentiment when its brought up on highly competitive sites (like this one). I'm under the impression that winning is usually universally enjoyed. When deciding how much $$$ to shell out for any hobby, you should outline what your goals are for said hobby.

So Nintendan, do you PRIMARILY care about winning this season? Do you want to play a variety of decks? Do you wanna play the BDIF? Do you want a deck with universally solid matchups? Do you prefer versatitlity over things like surprise factor and such?


Spending $60 on a staple that I will use for the next 365 days and is super versatile and splashable in the majority of competitive decks is an easy buy for me imo. I also really enjoy winning my pokemon matches when playing in official tournies. If these kinds don't matter to you, then by all means don't ever spend more than whatever arbitrary $$ relative to your budget. I can guide you to a variety of decks that are at or under $100 that are competitive, but not AS competitive as some of the more expensive decks/cards.

If you wanna get "serious" about pokemon though, you should get serious about shelling out some of your hard earned dough too :lightning:


As an aside, I recently got into pokemon last year and freaked out when cards like claydol, lux X, flygon x, and uxie x were around the $30 mark. If I could forsee how much fun i would have using these cards last year, i would've realized how much of a great investment it would've been to buy multiple copies of these cards despite their gasp inducing values to most other pokemon cards. As the pokemon tcg gets more popular, expect all competitive cards to see a universal rise in price too. Its simple supply and demand guys :water:
 
xcfrisco- Listen, i've won quite a few tournys in my time and believe me, there's nothing more gratifying and nothing more that i want to do. I practice every week at league because i don't want to lose! But winning certainly isn't anything! No crap winning is universially enjoyed, but even more enjoyed in my opinion is having a wicked close match down to sheer skill and strategy.

No offense, but if you play to win, and only to win then you might as well quit right now, because soon enough you'll quit anyway. I play to win, but not only to win. Basically, you took my comment partially wrong
 
Add more context than making blanket statements like "who cares about winning." Your previous post would've went a long way to giving the terrible (can i say terrible post on pokegym or is that cosidered trolling/against the rules?) post i quoted of yours more context. A lot of people out there play to win as their primary influence for excelling in pokemon (i imagine all the top tier players do this). And lol, EVERYONE will quit pokemon eventually. I don't see how people who play to win will quit any faster or slower than anyone else. Way more factors are involved when deciding when to no longer peruse in a hobby.

Google "Playing to Win," by David Sirlin, its a good read.
 
Everyone plays the game for different ways.
There is a fine line between them, and, while some players try to be both.. when the time comes.. you must pick which side you are on.
 
Hatter sounds like a character out of star wars ha but seriously if you want to win and have fun just do what you feel is th right choice and hopefully you find a good friend with some extra staples at a local league that you can maybe borrow or trade for.

I think that DialgaChomp is getting more popular, but it's definatly not as popular as LuxChomp, you should put, Sablock, Gengar/Vileplume/Spiritomb, etc...

I agree with these two. I enjoy winning, but I enjoy winning MORE when it's with MY deck. One where I've spent time, money, and energy towards perfecting. I'll play a major if it's a major tourney like Nationals. But I'm by far and away more comfortable and happier playing my own style and my own decks.

and @ Xfrisco,

first of all, you missed my point about quitting. If you only play to win and not to have fun your going to get bored and frustrated very quickly and stop. Also, how is telling someone to have fun with the game terrible advice?? WOW! Also, do you think all of the top teir players play only to win? I know our previous national champ(senior) who is number 1 world wide for all divisions. He has so much fun with the game it's crazy. I guess we have different priorities...
