2011-2-27 Weavile G PL 017

2nd! yay!

anyway, on topic:

80hp decent for a basic
no retreat, fighting weakness and psychic resistance. hmm, pretty decent as well.
first attack is pretty helpful, the second can be used effectively in some sp decks, team attack can do 70 base damage for two energy (assuuming you use dce) can easily knockout gengar prime which will be popular. so it's quite a good card for sp.
modified: 7/10

Pros:
Free retreat
Free attack
Gets 2 SPs
Starting with this gives you instant Power SPray usability if you have it
Lets you level up any SP you search for on your next turn (free retreat again beign awesome)
Attack cost isn't horrid
Attack is decently powered
Good typing
Good resistance

Cons:
Isn't intensly broken
Weakness is meh for Donphan, not a big deal for Machamp anyway

Pretty solid card, though it misses that little edge to be amazing. Solid 8/10 IMO

YES! Needed a card of the day to distract me from studying for my botany practical. Heck I'd even be happy if it were Bill or Mom's Kindness.

So Weavile G
80 Hp basic with a psychic resistance and no retreat are all good. The fighting weakness isn't good, but he is usually a used as a tech against psychics (lostgar) so that doesn't matter too much. First attack for no energy is very useful, especially in tandem with free retreat. Second attack for a dark and a dce or a dark and a colorless with energy gain can hit for up to 70 which is perfect because it can OHKO gengar prime provided u have an sp full bench. Really nice SP counter to lostgar, if you feel the need to tech against it.
8/10

Also, kinda like the art.

Weavile G is a card that has a lot more going for it than against it. For starters, it works as a great tech against Gengar in SP decks, taking advantage of the ghost Pokemon's dark weakness. For no energy, you could use call for family to load up your bench with SP Pokemon, but most SP decks generally have supporters and trainers do that for them. Its the second attack, which does 10+ 10 more damage for every SP Pokemon you have in play (Reminds me of the old Wigglytuff... with that attack 'Do the Wave.') and for only 1 Double Colorless and an Energy Gain, there's a lot to like about it. This one hits most Gengars every time. The psychic resistance also helps here and the free retreat cost lets you switch right back into a Luxray GL or Garchomp C.

The negative? The fighting type weakness really hurts it against Donphan and Machamp builds, which are already the anti-LuxChomp. 80 HP isn't spectacular, but most SP Pokemon have about that much HP anyway outside of the Level X's.

Overall, Weavile G is a good tech in SP builds.

Competive Play: 8.5/10
For your Collection: 7/10

Cons:
Isn't intensly broken

uh, dude... that's a pro.

Weavile G is a nice card, makes for GREAT League Play to introduce new members to the prowess of SP without slapping them repeatedly in the face with Luxchomp. Also makes a decent tech in Luxchomp or other SP against Gengar Prime, since it can just run through them easily, particularly if Belted. Call for Family means I may be willing to take out a Call for it. Good card, but not great.

6/10.

Most cards are only good or bad relative to the metagame they are in.

This card is only rated now because of what it does to Lostgar. If Lostgar is widely played, this is a great card. If Lostgar fails, it isn't. The CFF is nice, but its more of a bonus . . . it wasn't a big enough reason to play the card pre-Lostgar, was it?

In a meta with Lostgar - 9/10

In a meta without Lostgar - 5/10

The first attack is brilliant since it's like a Call energy for SPs.
Free retreat is nice paired with the Call for Family.
The main attack I don't really like. I'm not liking it as a Gengar Counter. You have to have a full field of SPs to OHKO Gengar (without Flash Bite) so it's denies your Uxies/Azelfs.
It's annoying it only does 10+. If it were 20 or 30+ then it would've been fine, but I don't think this is better than Absol G for Gengar countering.
7/10
Second attack isn't really that great, but Free retreat + CFF is brill.

The COTD today is Weavile G from the Platinum set. Let's start with the basics.
:dark: is a good offensive type to have, :fighting: weakness makes me shiver, :psychic: resistance is very useful, and it has the best possible retreat cost.

Its first attack, Call for Family, is pretty useful. It can get 2 Pokemon SP onto your bench. The best part? You don't have to attach any energy to Weavile to use it! The next attack, Team Attack, is mediocre at best. It does 10 damage plus 10 more damage for each Pokemon SP. It has nice synergy with its first attack, but you're doing 60 at most. And it costs a ridiculous :dark::colorless::colorless:! The second attack should never see play, even if you attach three special :dark: energy to it.

Modified: 7/10- Great starter in SP decks, as it allows you to set up with ease. The free retreat is even better on this card!

Limited: Considering you won't pull it here, I won't rate it.

6/10

great retreat of none. first attak is basically a call energy but you can only get sps. i dont see him as gengar counter as you need a full bench of sps with this dude active to get a ko on it, which means no uxei or azelf, or any other none sp card. ive never seen my bench all sps in my time of playing luxchomp(okay maybe 1nc or twice bu that wasnt ever a FULL bench). i like my honckrow SV as it helps against machamp and mewtwo lv x.

Yesterday's CotD (posted 2 hours before midnight, no wonder no one can review this on time, ugh!) is Weavile G from PL, still a moderately useful starter for SP decks, though Honchkrow G has pretty much taken over that role dominantly. Statwise 80 HP is great for a Basic (and about average for your common SP), x2 Weakness to :fighting: is meh, -20 Resistance to :psychic: is useful, and no Retreat Cost is great. Call for Family is nice that it grabs you any 2 Basic SP cards and adds them onto your bench for no Energy, making it a powerful opening attack. Team Attack though is a pricey attack option for :dark::colorless::colorless:, even with Energy Gain taking off a :colorless:, to deal just 10+ 10 more for each SP you have in play, so it only caps at a rather weak 60 damage.

Modified - 7/10 (Still a good card, just that Honchkrow G is more powerful in what it can search out and do for your SP deck, as finding more SPs usually isn't a problem)
Limited - 8/10 (Depends really, if you're drafting this within PL only or a mix that also includes RR and SV, then for sure take him if you're running an SP deck. If you're drafting like any random sets, like Mutant, then don't bother with him unless you need him as like an evo)
Unlimited - 1/10 (Not much use here, who uses SP decks here?)

There fixed it for you. And now that you see it does 70 damage, you should understand, that it is very useful, especially for killing gengars.

Weavile G was used by many as a starter when PT first came out, but then it died down and many preferred Honchkrow G over this. But now it has risen in popularity with the release of Call of Legends. Why? Let's find out:

Type::dark: (counter to Gengar Prime!)
Weakness::fighting:(Not too bad considering Machamp already OHKOs it and Donphan does with an E-Belt)
Resist::psychic:(Amazing!
Retreat:none(Amazing)
Rating for Stats:9/10 (really good!)

Attacks:

For no energy, call for family allows you a call but only for SP. When it was released, people thought it was the perfect starter, but now, most SP decks don't have starters. A pretty good attack overall, but not nice enough to make a deck around. But it is still good if you use him as a tech, 'cause then if you start with him, you have a free call for SP!
Rating:7.5/10 (decent attack, but not nice enough to make a starter. But, if used as tech, free call if started!)

For :dark::colorless::colorless:, team attack does 10+10 for each SP you have in play (at least 20 because Weavile G is an SP). Combos with first attack, but at first glance, this looks really steep. 3 for 70 and no room for Uxies or other non-SP techs? But at a second glance, there are three things that make it better:
1. OHKO Gengar Prime/lv.x. This is why most people are including it in their SP builds to counter Gengar. But still, to OHKO you need no non-SP pokes on bench and 5 SP pokes on bench, plus three energy. Is there any way to speed it up and increase damage?
2. DCE! To speed it up, you can use DCE, which is used in almost all SP builds b/c of Garchomp C X, so it requires no extra space.
3. Special Dark can increase damage, making you still be able to OHKO Gengar with 1 bench space free for uxies, azelfs, and any other non-SP tech.
3 1/2. Expert Belt can be used to free up 2 spaces on bench, and allows you to use the searchable basic dark. The only problem is that if they use their promocroak (a common tech against dark types in Lostgar) to KO you back, you just lost 2 prizes.
Rating:8/10 (OHKO's Gengar for 2 energy, but still a little harsh, with 1 (2 if E-Belt is used) free space(s) and 2 unsearchable energies (1 if E-Belt is used), but a nice counter for an SP build.)

Conclusion: Weavile G is an amazing counter to gengar in SP builds and boasts a nice first attack if you happen to start with him, as well as some amazing stats, but suffers from being limited to only SP decks, being hard to set up, and limmiting bench space)

Overall Rating: 8/10

Decks to use him in: All SP varients, as long as Lostgar remains strong

Combos: Speacial Dark, DCE, Expert Belt, SP pokemon

P.S. If Lostgar wasn't in format, stats rating would drop down to 7, attack #1 down to 6, attack #2 down to 4, and overall down to 6
