Today's card of the day is Absol from the EX Dragon expansion. Let's start with the basics. It has 70HP, on the low side for an un-evolving basic, bad weakness, good resistance, and OK retreat cost. Its first attack, Doom News does the same thing as Purugly G, but doesn't do damage. Not too impressive, though if you build up your Opponent's hand with Medicham SV, and bring in a locker like Vileplume, you can potentially do a ton of damage. However, this takes too long to set up and you're not doing any damage. Its second attack, Prize Count, does a mere 20 damage for :dark::colorless:, however, if you have more prizes left than your Opponent, it does 40. That still isn't impressive.

Modified: 3/10- Too little for too much here.
Limited: 5/10- If your Opponent gets hurt by Doom News, they'll be crushed.

Today's CotD is Absol from DR...why we're reviewing such an ancient thing (lol e-reader era) on an otherwise festive day (Mardi Gras), I'll never know...statwise 70 HP is good for a Basic, x2 Weakness to :fighting: sucks, -30 Resistance to :psychic: is nice, and :colorless: to Retreat is cheap. My memory is a bit foggy from this era, but I definitely don't remember seeing too many of these...Bad News is decent for :dark:, forcing your opponent's hand size down to 5 if they have more than that number by randomly discarding cards in their hand. Prize Count is eh, but can be used in a pinch, :dark::colorless: for 20 is weak but if you're losing, it grows into an ok 40.

Unlimited - 1/10 (I can't see any reason to play this besides Bad News, and even then people cycle through cards to set up things so fast here, it's kinda moot in point)

Awwww. He wants to play!

Yeah, seems like it want to. Absol's not all to bad. I mean, had Absol showed up before the 9/11 disaster, the whole thing could have been avoided.

Back to the card.

I believe that EX Dragon was the forth R/S set so I won't compare the cards to the ones out now. Bad News was a new type of attack for the first few sets allowing you to discard 2+ cards from your opponents hand during setup if the absol player had to redraw a few time but other than that, as the game continues, discard their hand to 5 is not all too helpful.

Prize Count is an OK attack. If you let you opponent lead in prizes, you can hit for 50+ which is good for 2 but Absol lost its time to shine due to Rayquaza ex.

70 HP is good for the R/S series as most non legend basics had between 60 and 80 HP. I think Absol should have been given a Poke Power or Body to make it a little more playable.

Stats are standard for a Dark type with the same weaknesses, resistances and retreat.

Overall during that time, I'll give it a 3/10 just because of Rayquaza and Blaziken stole the spotlight from it.
