3DS or DSi?

There's something I've been wondering. I'm looking to upgrade my DSlite, and am trying to decide between getting a DSi or waiting until the 3DS comes out. I need the upgrade primarily for the access to WPA encrypted networks for Pokemon White version, and want to know if the 3DS will have substantially more features to justify the extra $100+ that it would cost to order.

I feel like I'd be better off just going with the DSi but wanted to get some extra opinions.

If it is between the DSi and 3DS - go 3DS. You get everything the DSi has plus more. It IS the successor to the DS line, so you may as well get the latest system.

True as it may be that it's the latest, I was wondering more if the extra $100 would be justified in getting it for my specific purpose, aside from being the latest.

Let me tell you that the DSis LR buttons aren't all that great. I'm not sure about the 3DSs but they will probably be better. Just a little thing I thought I'd tell you.
If you aren't going to play/buy most/any of the 3D games, you might as well just get a DSi.
Up to you.

Because of the 3DS' higher hardware power over the DS, most companies will probably opt to make games for it, even if they don't use the 3D mechanics. If you get the DSi, you'll eventually have to upgrade to get access to the new games. I'm not sure of the exact point, but game companies are jumping on this, and I don't think it will be long (perhaps six months? A year?) before they are producing exclusively 3DS titles. You're going to have to upgrade eventually, so you might as well not spend $150 or so before then.

Also, I don't think DS games work with WPA. DSi apps might, but I don't think the games do. So, whichever one you get, you might have to look elsewhere for wifi.

From here:

While the Nintendo DSi is compatible with WPA security, Nintendo DS games with online play still require the use of WEP or no security to connect with the Nintendo WFC.

So, yeah. You're stuck either way. Sorry.

Not to mention, if you wait to get the 3DS, they may release more colors. :) I'm hoping we'll get that awesome purple they showed off (I think it was at E3?). I'm totally psyched for a lot of the games, Zelda & SMT in particular, but I can afford to wait a few months at least. Plus, I'm hoping to go to Worlds this year, so I'm trying not to make too many big purchases until September.

Lets not forget a special edition might pop up with a bundle.

I'd keep the DSL for now. All of the advancements in the DSi and 3DS IMO haven't made up for them taking out the GBA slot, removing massive amounts of functionality from the Pokemon games and making the Guitar Hero series of games completely unplayable. Also, they're GOING to make an upgraded version of the 3DS within a year or two. It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when. I'd wait for that and some good 3DS games to come out before going into that generation.

DS Lite.
3DS later in the year pending a Special Edition coming out.

So your answer is both? Derp.

It really depends on how much you're gonna use your DS. If it's a lot, you might as well get a 3DS. The higher processing power and other upgrades definitely seem worth it. If you're a really casual player (ie just Pokemon), then I'd just go for the DSi.

Very true, there are no games that appeal to me right now, and I'm in no hurry to play the new Black/White since I don't have tournaments down here, so I'm going to wait for the 3DS upgrade which will probably be something like the Nintendo 3DSi XLite or something ridiculous :p

well the thing is they will make a thing better than a 3ds. probably a 3dsi xl or something like tht about 5 months after the release. so u mine as well get the dsi then get the newer 3ds when it comes out

After reviewing the responses and talking with some other friends at my local league, I think it would be more financially sound to jump on the 3DS in the long run. I really have no cares for special editions or the advanced 3DS that will probably be made, since the functionality will be the same regardless. The main thing I need upgraded is being able to access the WPA encrypted network at home, which a DSi and 3DS can both do, and keep up on the Pokemon games (other games don't concern me too much), and all things considered, when Nintendo releases a new Pokemon game, be it Pkmn Grey or whatever they make, it will most likely be made for the 3DS. Thank you all so much for your input, it is much appreciated!

I think the price scared everybody man...more than a Wii?
Even I had trouble coming up w/money for the 1st Gen Wii...but this...give me another year. XD
