After cranking out three more applications for summer research positions, I finagle a way get a ride and a deck for California States. Gabe comes to pick me up, we go over to his place, and I more or less crash.

Anyway, the day of, I'm feeling rather apathetic. I want to run a hyperconsistent luxchomp or try out Magnezone, but in the end I go with Jeremy's luxchomp list because he's more experienced with handling the crapshoot that is the California meta.

Registration is closed by 8:45 am, and the first round starts at 10:30 am.

Round 1 – vs. Some Pokemom w/Donphan Machamp

On one hand, she was a Pokemom, so I wasn't too worried, but nothing like Donphan/Machamp to start the day off to an annoying note. I go first and whiff the Call, she misses the T1 champ thankfully, catches it T2 off of a Rainbow Energy which lets me answer with Zen Blade/Lucario GL in play. Thinking I've stabilized, she responds with another Machamp line and DCE, and nails ¾ heads for Hurricane Punch, so I am again down attachments, promoting a Dialga G and levelling up to stall as I build energy on another Uxie. She belts and hits ¾ heads, and thinks she has the KO, but Belt adds +20 so I live with 10, to be Poketurned. I premier ball the Uxie X, attach DCE, double Crobat and the second Machamp is gone. She gets a Machamp Prime out but fails to hit any more fighting energy until I only have one prize left. She had a son in seniors so I hope he did well.

1-0

Round 2 – vs. Jared w/straight Gengar SF / Staraptor / Seeker

Again going first, Dialga and a Metal. :( He fortunately opened Staraptor, and so I wasn't sure what he was playing until he dropped the Ghastly, at which point I figured it was either a speed Gengar/SP hybrid or Staraptor as a tech in Vilegar. It was neither. I put 50 on Staraptor, he levels up, retreats, Looker's me into 4 trainers, and Poltergeists the knockout. I come back, taking four prizes to his none by carefully managing my hand. At this point he has a Gengar LV. X out and belted, BTS, two Uxie, and a Gengar on bench. I know he plays Seeker, he's used two on various things. I get damage onto his Gengar LV until it's within D Rush, with the bright look to force it to bench to avoid resistance.......

Retreats, seekers, plops it back down, levels up the other gengar, poltergeists. At this point my hand is running out of steam so I'm kinda raging. Anyway, I decide to go for both the Uxies. Knock one out, he draws the energy for the other and restores it under and I'm left with absolutely nothing on board. Time is called as I end my turn and so he takes a prize each of his last two turns to win it.

1-1

Round 3 – vs. Lewis ? w/Mew/Gengar Prime

I go first with Unown Q start, drop Azelf, decline to take anything with Time walk, retreat, use Quick, and pass. He attaches a rainbow and lost zones his own Gengar Prime. I collector for Luxray / Dialga / Uxie and draw into the Cyrus, and pass. He lost zones Machamp and attaches a psychic to the Mew. I make sure to dump pokes from my hand, level up Dialga, second strike the knockout. At one point I foolishly poketurn dialga to take a bright look prize off of gastly, he uses this to Twins for Switch and Fighting, Switching his Smeargle out of active (surprise!) and drops down a Mew a Fighting to Take Out. I regrab Dialga G X and clean up.

2-1

Round 4 – vs. Eddie Gutierrez w.Luxchomp?

One of Gabriel's friends I met last night. I start Dialga G again, going second, with bad hand after mulliganing. He starts Garch DCE Claw Swipe. Attach Metal pass. He hits the Garch X to rush for Game. I coulda dropped Crobat, and my next card woulda been supporter, but I didn't feel like fighting for it.

2-2

I dropped. It was a great chance to see my friends and the individuals in the community with whom I have formed friendships and whatnot, but in the end I've become apathetic about playing the game itself. I think I might take my professor test and judge some Battle Toads, go to league when I'm back in NC, all that good stuff, but I really don't see myself playing competitively with the other demands being placed upon my time.

That said, Pokemon has been a wonderful experience and I thank everyone for that, and I hope to stay in contact with those of you that matter.

Props:
Gabe for the room/ride
Jeremy for the deck
Friendships formed through this game

Slops:
Gender ratios
Body odor
Boring format

I wish everyone best of luck through the rest of the 2010-2011 season.

2-2 is legit, nice.

good think I'm one of the "those that matter."
....right?

Dude, don't leave us to die of boredom on the gym bro! Anyways, hope your post pokemon career is more fruitful than your pokemon career ;)

Dude! It's kind of sad but I feel much the same way. I'm just getting tired of the grind that this format has become. It feels like I win an event one week then go 3-3 the next with pretty much the same deck. I'm holding out hope that the we have an early format rotation just to keep my interest up, but if we don't then next weekend might be my last event for the year. 3 years of SP, Gengar SF, and Gyarados has taken it's toll on me.

Anyway, I hope that I'll see you and your brothers at some point. You guys are awesome! Good luck with that research position. Don't forget that there is stuff going on here in the East too that way. I think about physics research myself every time I drive by Oak Ridge Labs in TN.

Actually, Mr. Sterrett, I just submitted an application to do research at your alma mater! Ben won't be making either states due to work, but I'm going to try and judge a BR or two if I can help it.
