Grind my gears!! Topic discussion/apology

Hi guys!! First and foremost, I would like to apologize for my first Grind my gears article. It wasn't very organized, and I made some stupid (but funny) comments that I shouldn't have made. I went all over the place with my topic, leaving everyone confused as to where I stood, and what side I was on. Therefore, certain people assumed that I meant one thing, when I meant something else. Not only that, people came on that thread joking around because of that. Which made the problem seem bigger than it originally was.

I quickly took offense to all of that, and fired back. I got frustrated that people weren't understanding me, and I tried to defend my points, but failed at it. I'm sorry for what I did, and it should have been better. With that said, lets move on to today's topic.

RA, gave me an Idea when I read his rant thread the other day. I should have done something like that in the first place, instead of trying to type long, articulate post and failing at it. This topic is about choosing what really grinds your gears. What I want you to do is pick a topic, any topic you would like to rant about, and post it in this thread. If you agree with some or most of the topics in this thread, I will do a article on that topic. I will make a list, and put it in the OP for everyone to see it. I also encourage you to come up with new topics, so they can be fresh and exciting to read.

Also, when you post your topic, start it out by saying: "You know what really grinds my gears?" Then give us a reason why. Not too much though, because we want to save the good stuff for the article, if we make one out of your topic. And If you agree with one of the topics, say: "I agree with (whoever). That really does grind my gears!!"

Exceptions
Also, I do not want any joke posts. I don't want to here about KLINKLANG, or anything like that. I want real topics, real problems that grind your gears. Also, ANYONE saying that "this post grids their gears." That's not a topic. You have been warned. So you can't say I didn't cover it up here. I will not tolerate any foolery on this thread.

Grind my gears list
1. Netdecking
2. Scratched sleeves/using different sleeves
3. Spamming posts/joking/trolling
4. Asking about someone's deck before you face someone
5. Hand shuffling

Discuss.

So is this kind of like the series RA just started...?

sort of, but we're ranting about anything that you the players want to rant about. I just didn't know how to do it the first time and I went in head first, so I had the Idea, while he just did it better than I did. He even gives credit to me in the OP of his post about the idea.

You know what really grinds my gears? All this crap over sleeves.

We're constantly checking sleeves, is there a mark here or a mark there, are some new and some old, could there be a pattern? It is not possible to shuffle repeatedly and not mark the sleeves somewhat. Sleeves get scuffed. I just hope there isn't a PATTERN, OMG!!!.

Ok, in Poker, I get it. If cards are marked a player has a clear advantage. In Pokemon, if there is a mark on the back of a sleeve, you MAY know what you will be top decking. Ask yourself, really, how often is that information useful to you in terms of any decision you make prior to drawing a card? I mean really, not in principle.

Finally this year Pokemon official Ultra Pros come in packs of 60. With normal Ultra Pro or any other 50-pack sleeves, I have to carefully compare dye lots under a strong light to see if there might be shades. The Arceus prerelease sleeves came in two shades of gray and I had to throw them in the trash at a tournament. About half of my sleeves were one shade, so I know I am will be topdecking one of 30 cards in my deck (random). OMG! Potential Advantage!! Back to the resleevery with you!

And then there is this nonsense about the edges of sleeves, so if I turn the deck to the side, and I know which cards stand out a bit, by being off color, bad Regi sleeve, whatever. Has anyone ever seen an opponent look at the deck on the side? So I know my Roseanne's is 1/3 of the way from the top. How does that help me? You go into your deck to search for something about every turn anyway. Feh on this whole thing.

You know what really grinds my gears? NETDECKING!!!

People that are lazy and go around making a claim on somebody else's hard work. It drives me (and many others, I'm sure) insane! Some may say that "It's just a good starting point for somebody who hasn't played the deck." Well I say fooey on that. If they don't have experience with the deck and they take somebody else's list, how are they supposed to know what's the most vital if they want to edit it? They don't. They'll end up botching the whole thing, and get worse every time they try to improve. How does that help them?! And what if they have experience with the deck? Then they should be able to recreate the deck on their own, with their own list! It's just sheer laziness.

So, some may ask, "What do you do if you want to try a new deck, then, and don't have experience with it?" You do some research. Ask people that have played it or know something about it. Ask a more experienced player in general. Ask a friend. Read an article. Read a strategy in the "Deck Help" section. But don't focus in on the list they provide! That's their personal list! Maybe ask the author (if it's an article, that is) to PM you a skeleton. That's good! Skeletons are a good thing. But let people figure things out on their own. THAT REALLY GRINDS MY GEARS!!!!!

I also agree with FunnyBear a little bit. That also grinds my gears. I suppose at Regionals and upwards that being scrutinous is okay, but let the small ones slide. Nobody is going to memorize the edges of sleeves or the scratches. (Supposing there aren't any really distinct ones.) And they should allow any sleeves that aren't reflective and have the exact same backing. I have bacon sleeves. LET ME USE THEM!!!!!

Well, there's my rant.

Agreed about the sleeves. At Regionals this year, I handed my deck list in and decided to go for the optional deck check - just to be safe. The judge checking my sleeves said they were fine, there was no problem with them. Great! Round 4 or 5, I get called for a random deck check and I'm not worried - until I'm told that two of my sleeves are "marked." I have to start the next round with a prize penalty. I still won that game, but I'm just annoyed by the fact that my sleeves checked out in the beginning and were then counted as marked a few games later. I've never even heard of people getting a prize penalty in the next game for having poor sleeves after a round had finished.

Well, there's my rant.

There has been talk about netdecking on here before. And it always ends pretty badly for the person thats against it. I'll put this topic in the OP.

As far as sleeves go, I do want to be able to use different types of sleeves. But I can see why it's not that way. You don't want kids looking at naked ladies on the back of your sleeves do you? I think they should un-ban them to the point where they're not graphic, so we can at least have some cool sleeves.

Now scratches I can sorta understand because the judge doesn't know that you don't know there's a scratch on them. They see a scratch as an advantage for that player. There's no use arguing that because some players do do that. But, they can't get away with it in Pokemon, so that's not a problem here. I'll put this topic in the OP too, but as being able to use different sleeves.

Your title is misspelled by the way. Thought I'd let you know! (And let's not start trouble with our suggestions. :nonono:

You know what really grinds my gears? People who get on serious threads, and joke around, and go totally off topic of the discussion. It doesn't make any sense that that should happen. At least when I joke around, I stay on topic. And I give reasons why I do what I do. I used to be worse than that. I used to come on thread and give an opinion on a topic. When someone disagreed with me, I flamed them, and I mean hard!! Go back in the archives and check those Amphytric threads. You'll know what I'm talking about. I'll put this topic in the OP as well.

Okay. Now, back on topic....

This thread grinds my gears. This is by no means YOUR thread. By definition, any thread on the forums are community threads... they do not belong to anybody. By definition, this thread discourages intelligent discussion. This thread is used to complain about issues that may or may not even be real issues. This thread, by design, is a place to be ranting. When someone responds intelligently, that is not ranting... that is an intelligent discussion, and is thus off topic. Joke posts will often come to REALLY BAD threads... this is definitely one of them. Look at a real thread, and you will not see very many jokes, and the ones that are there are most likely responding to a stupid post with sarcasm. In general, that is how forums work. RA's posts all seem to support very intelligent discussions. He took your idea of how to do a bad rant, and made a thread out of it. That thread, by some metrics, failed. Many people are making unfound claims due to lack of experience in what they are discussing (I major lol'd at some people naming top decks as "pokemon that were never good"). A good thread should support intelligent discussion as opposed to ranting. Let me take an example. Rikko's post here was completely unfounded. It may be annoying for some players, but that annoyance is from a very limited point of view. If you go to the thread about net decking from a little bit back (Jwittz's post as I recall), you'll find a huge amount of very intelligent discussion about net decking. I'd make some comments about Rikko's post, but that would be offtopic, wouldn't it? Thus, this entire thread can be considered as spam, and spam is opposed on this forum. A thread that offers no reason to read and respond to other posts made by other members is really spam. So yeah... stupid threads like this seem to grind my gears (Amphy#1 used Gear Grind! Its super effective!)

Dude, I hate that program. Paint.net is way better. Look it up.

The thing that really annoys me is people who ask what deck you are playing before a game starts, and act like they are "so going to win". My cousin was playing Tyranitar at States. This one kid asked what he was playing, and he told him. The kid said "Oh, I'm playing Mightytank. You're gonna get owned." The first thing I wonder about this statement is why Mightytank owns Tyranitar. It... doesn't really own anything.

My cousin got a pretty good start, and got ahead a few prize cards, his opponent saying he's gonna come back anytime. My cousin has one prize left, the kid still being annoying, and he decides to sacrifice his T-tar Prime (belted) just to annoy the kid. Of course, my cousin still wins.

But it's pointless to even ask. Sure, you might learn what they're playing and get around it somehow. But really, it's inevitable that you're gonna play them.

You know what grinds my gears? People who shuffle their hand. I hate the sound of it, the look of it. Makes me feel like my opponent is too impatient and just can't wait for my turn to end even though i would have to say my opponents turns last longer than mine the majority of the time.

Really? Yeah, it is a ranting thread. Didn't you read the OP? We're coming up with topics to rant about, and I'm going to be making an article out of some of them on the list. Like I said before, netdecking has been talked about on here before. Why can't we talk about it? Maybe I'll use JWittz's post as a reference if I decide to do a Grind my gears-netdecking thread.

If you're trying to rattle me, it won't work. Nice try buddy. Good job posting in what you call a spam thread. Why even post here if you know it's spam then? That's not very wise of you is it?

Anyway, you're whole post is off topic. I will not be adding it to the list. Good day.

Adding asking what deck you're using, and hand shuffling to the list.

i hate people that are to smug in pokemon i won states and a kid was like the only reason i won was because i lucsacked i got lucsacked so bad in top2 first game i got pwned and the other games he got an ok start and i got a medeocre start i was playing donphan and i won without getting a single warp point of BTS the entire game and it was a long game

i mean this game is supposed to be played for fun not be mean:mad:

I kinda hate it when people put, in their reports, "oh, I didn't really playtest at all" when you KNOW they did...

edit: Referring to the winning/well doing players.
