ok so over the course of day 1 i heard of several bad and rather funny calls 3 were my friends

1. my friend john got deck checked at 1-4 so that on its own was funny then the judge tried to tell him he cant use his collectors cause he mispelled it by 1 letter he appealed and it was reversed

2. steven got a warning for TALKING to his opponet to much (his opponet didnt even complain)

3 james A. (the t-tar kid) got a slow play warning when he was down by 4 prizes and his opponet even disagreed with it

also john and james were both called by the same judge not sure if steven was tho

but any way what did u all hear that was funny or just bad

There were two judges presiding over my t64 match and neither I nor either of them heard when time was called. It was kind of funny cuz they just kept looking at and even kind of blaming eachother.

You do know that "slow play" has absolutely nothing to do with prize count, right?? It simply means that a player is consistently exceeding the rec time guidelines. Similarly, it isn't relevant if the other player disagrees or not.. players exceeding the guidelines with a consistent pattern are subject to this warning. Once intent rears its head, then we are looking at stalling, which is an entirely different kettle of fish...

yes, but until the oppononent complains about stalling/slow playing the judge shouldn't warn players.
at least....
that's what they told me.

Trying to discredit judges in one thread, and asking for top 32 lists in another - good contributions.

If you are slow playing, then you are slow playing. Judges will be judges though, not all judges are the same. If somebody was slow playing on me, I most likely wouldn't say anything because I really wouldn't care...id still win no matter what. So right on for a judge inforcing a rule.

I feel there should be a thread for funny situations during the day.

Making public fun of judges is one thing, but making light humour is another. However, the number of humourous situations of judges making errors or strange situations are probably too small.

If there was one general 'funny things that happened ingame at nationals' thread... that would be great!

Why did this get unlocked???

I think that it was a nice gesture to unlock it. It wouldn't be fair nor right to have judges excluded from and shielded from parody, criticism, or controversy, especially since this is community made up of and run by a lot of them. Perhaps the person who started this thread was more interested in what judges did that was funny, not what is supposed to make them 'look bad' or 'discredit' them.

Judges should be able to take criticism, just as players should also. These type of threads help the judges see where some potential problem areas occur, and the next tournament, hopefully they will be addressed so they will not happen again.

Now for calls at Nats, I have a few being the deck checker for the Masters blue flight. The majority of problems I saw were list errors ranging from not enough cards, too many cards, and illegible handwriting.

Donphan, I did not get the list of your friends who misspelled the card, so I am not sure who did that one, however I had a list that was illegible, and when I checked it with the player, he showed me his writing, and I let the check pass, as one of his 3's looked like a 2 with a long tail.

Just a word to the wise here, make sure your list is complete. Double count it if you hand write it, and check it against the deck exactly. Another player dropped from Nats after their check because of a card left off the list, and they were unable to use that same card. Few others lost cards in their deck because of not writing them down on their list. Remember, the penalty is that the list must match deck, then BASIC ENERGY are added to make the deck legal.

The other 2 issues you posted though, A player should not have to listen to his opponent talk too much, even without complaining, and the fact that the other tables could of complained about it made the judge make the call. Slow play is slow play, regardless if anyone complains or not.

On a playing field of that scale, you have to think of the pressure that the judges are under to make the best calls. The only real time we get feedback from people is if we did something wrong, or made a call that someone didn't agree with.

We will never be 100% perfect. No judge can ever be, as every call is a little different and we interpret them differently.
