Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

2014 Season Updates and Event Dates!!!!!

Good changes. I've been wanting to pay for entry to tournaments for a while now. The prize pools have been way too low for the amount of effort put into playing this game competitively.

As a player who missed top cut at Worlds because of two consecutive T1 donks I'm really happy about b-o-3 in higher tier tournaments. 50 minutes isn't really much but with ties instead of sudden death it shouldn't be too unfair against slower decks.

I'm completely fine with an entry fee that goes into the prize pool to break it down lower than before. In the end, it rewards players who do constantly well (positive finish) but don't top cut every tournament. It also gives newer players some feeling of success if they get prizes based on their final standing and could even reduce drop rate. (And it will be the end of countless "went X-1 but went home empty-handed thanks to tie breaker" City Championships.)

The return of draws and possibly reduced drop rates also make the top cut borders much fairer because OppWin tie breakers are screwed less often (drops completely screwed them) and are less important.

What I don't like is the reduction of top cuts to eight. Hopefully this also means there are significantly more swiss rounds.

btw, somebody else realized that almost all of the changes are inspired by the organized play structures of Magic: The Gathering?

I'm actually fine with Top Cuts being at 8. With all rounds being best of 3, the standings will be more accurate, since lucky donks will be minimized. Plus, the extra time added from extending the rounds to 50 minutes will be made up with smaller Top Cuts.

The Battle Roads tournaments at the end of a League Session means 8 Battle Roads at one League (8 seasons a year/8 sessions). However, just like last year, I have a feeling this will start late, so leagues for this year will most likely have 6 end of season Tournaments before worlds. Depending on where you live, that could be either good or bad. I know my area, we will have 2-3 leagues within a hour block at different times. I don't know if they will include these since the other 2 only meet once a month/season to begin with, but mine will for sure have one!

Just submitted my TO form (tho the info makes it seem that is changing if I'm not mistaken?)

EDIT: Due note, that seasons could be longer/shorter/more spread than the past with these changes.

I have a huge mix of emotions right now, so I won't go into anything specific.

HOWEVER, I have one major frustration right now. Do we really only have 1 potential BR (or, well, League Championship or whatever) each league season? If so, then we will have a very LONG dead area for tournaments around right now.

Of course, I haven't attended league in a long time, so I may be misunderstanding things. Do different leagues have the option of starting/ending league seasons within a certain time frame? Then I guess there would be multiple tournaments. Either way, won't the first League Championship not happen for a long time? I don't believe there is a currently active season? Do we not have any tournaments until late October? That really sucks if that's the case.

A League Season is the 6-8 weeks that you get the same Promo card. Each time a LL or LO orders new supplies, that's a new League Season.

My biggest dislike for the Pokemon Season is the 3 State Championships in back to back to back weekends, wish they could spread them up a little bit more.

Other than that. Love everything.

They've had the State Championships on back-to-back weeks pretty much forever. This isn't a change.

A league season, at the current time (Humilau in Unova2 cycle), is the 5-6 weeks that you get the same score card. I guess you could call the PTCGO code a promo card but I don't think of it that way.

Each season has defined official start and end times. Some league leaders will track points on paper starting from the official time, with or without the new supplies. However, if the new supplies arrive before the start date, we are not supposed to use them. Points cannot be awarded ahead of the new season but they can be awarded ahead of the new supplies if the new season has started.

How does b-o-3 in swiss introduce ties? Does that mean if only 2 games are completed it won't go to sudden death?

I think the extra prize support will end up being a good thing with entry fees.

Just thinking out loud. Say that it's $5 entry fee for league challenges. To's get booster boxes for around $60 probably. For a 20 person tournament that's $80 of prize support or 1 1/3 box, so 48 additional packs.

Extend a booster pack prize for 5-8 place. We're working with 44 extra packs of prize support for spots 1-4. Right now the split is 4/4/2/2, maybe change it to 5/3/2/2 if promo's as prizes are eliminated. Redistributing those 44 packs, you get 18 packs for first, 12 for second, and 7 for 3rd/4th.

That breaks down to for a 20 person league challenge:

1st - 22 packs
2nd - 15 packs
3rd/4th - 9 packs
5th/8th - 1 pack

Now do the same thing for city championships with a $10 entry fee. Add 2 packs for 5th-8th. That's $200 of prize support or 3 1/3 boxes, or 120 additional packs.

1st - 74 packs
2nd - 42 packs
3rd/4th - 16 packs
5th/8th - 2 packs

The potential prizes for placing at a league challenge or city championship could be outstanding because of the entry fees.

Not sure where you are getting this value from. PTOs pay more than that. Regular TOs will pay much more.

Ah, so *that's* how leagues are supposed to be ran!

...Long story short, HGSS promos in, like, Sept. 2012.

Anyways, I like this news. League Challenges sound fun. Just have to hope a league around here actually does them. :p

I can get them for $89 through public means so I can't see it being too much. 87 if I buy it as a case.
I can't imagine that the league location where the tournament is would be very happy about you not buying the prize support from them instead :nonono:

Well I buy mostly singles from my local shop for my cards. But should I feel bad about saving $130 or so if I choose to go the case direction? Nope, not a chance.

So, when will the first round of League Championships happen? Again, I don't attend leagues, I have no idea where we are at as far as current league seasons are concerned.

Basically, I'm worried that we won't see tournaments at all until October, leaving a VERY long break for me having not attended a tourney since Nats.

Most likely October, cause the season we are in now ends mid September. After that, it should be the new seasons and supplies.

The way I'm reading the info, then, is that if the season we are in now ends mid September, then the League Challenges should also be mid-late september. That's ok, I guess. That's when BRs would have started.

IF, of course, it's not until October, that really stinks. That's an almost 1/4 of a year without tournaments for those not attending Worlds. Of course, that probably should be avoided in the future (since we should get these tournaments every 6 weeks no matter what, roughly), but this year it's kinda awkward.

The league season will start mid-late september, but the challenges are at the end of the season, hence October.

Unova2 didn't start until October 22. Before that, leagues started up around mid to late September.

However, leagues may have to figure out logistical issues before getting these tournaments going. Many leagues that I know did not set up expecting to run tournaments so at the moment they are not equipped to pick up and start tournaments immediately. Their schedule wasn't planned for tournaments. For example, my Friday venue only does 30-card single-elimination tournaments because we cannot do 60-card swiss from 3PM-6PM and considering most of the 14- players don't show up until 3:45. LOs who don't have TO status have to put in an application. We were all using the PTO to run events. Some LOs are the only LL for that league. This staffing is important because the LO's first responsibility is the league. I cannot run a tournament if I'm the only LL even if I am a TO. My weekend league is a better candidate for these tournaments--I started it with the intention that it would do tournaments--but I have to figure out who I can get to judge them. Maybe I can promise them a ride to Regionals...

You're not saving any money. The money would go from the players hands into the store's hands.
