I recently moved into residence at my university and am sharing a room with one other person. We both have a computer, so he bought a router so we could both connect to the internet. However, only one of us is capable of using the router at a time and we can't figure out why. In order for me to get the internet after my roommate has been using it, I need to actually go and plug my computer into the internet jack, and then the jack back into the router to get my wireless internet. =/

Does anyone know how we can set up our connection to both use the internet at the same time?

Also, I'm not sure if this makes a difference, but he has a mac and I do not.
 
You need to get a Mac too since they're better :p

What type of Router are you using? I have a Linksys WRT54G and have a Mac and PC connected via ethernet and a Wii/DS on Wireless. They all work simultaneously. I think it is your router.
 
I have a Linksys wireless-G Broadband router. It works fine although we've never had two laptops/computers to try on it at the same time, we have had multiple DSs using it at the same time. And yes though get a mac. They're from apple and apple is the best. How many GHz does yours have? We have 2.4 for ours.
 
Chances are you need to update your router. My wife and i had issues with our Router, until we were told it needed to be updated. As mentioned above, call the Routers help center, and find out where to get an update. I'm willing to bet that will fix the problem.

All that is required to go wireless is a wireless ethernet card in each pc. Connect the modem to the router, and search for the access point for each pc to connect. Also if your running wireless, you won't have a cord connecting the pc to the router. If you want to connect both pc's without having them in the same room. Have one connect by wire, and one connect wireless. But to do this you must have a wireless router that also has ports for the wired connection. If your connecting up via wired for both, the router should have more than one connection port to allow multiple pc's to be connected.

Of course you could always request to be moved to a dorm next to someone who already has Wi-Fi that works and leech off of his.
 
Perhaps his living quarters are off campus or just ont in range. If they just don't have one suggest it. dont make petitions that just elementary.

You should only do that temporarily. It is not reliable. They could be hogging all of the bandwidth. They could disconnect the router. They could randomly set-up a security measure one day. I wouldn't recommend it for a regular basis.

Well, at least the problem is solved. :smile:

Umm no...:nonono:Buying a mac won't solve any of his problems.

As for your router problem, maybe you have a Defective unit. From what I read, you were trying to connect wirelessly, could also be an issue with your firmware on that router that causes the connection to drop or maybe wireless interference. If you could tell me what router you are using (please include, company name and model number) I could help you more, believe me man, I know a lot about routers.
