I went with Flygon δ /Flygon ex δ. I teched out the Lati-lock for a switch and another Windstorm because I figured the game would be filled with status disruption and Cessation Crystals (didn’t see one), Battle Frontiers (didn’t see one), and Crystal Beaches (actually ‘stormed away two of those in round 3). I replaced the Holon Engine from last season with the same cards everybody is using. I subbed Castaways for Transceivers, Fearow δ for Reasearchers, Night Maintenance for Farmer, and just plain didn’t worry about draw cards.
1st Round: Tina M. (Homeofmew) - Flygon/Flygon-ex (with the Lati-lock tech, the Mew δ *, the Tropius δ, Chimeco δ, and the Cloyster δ tech)
Tina got stuck with part of the Cloyster δ tech prized, and even though she got going ahead of me she wound up suffering an energy crisis right when one more energy would have basically won her the game. A tough luck-result for a good trainer who deserved to win, but it would get a little worse for her (that’s a foreshadow).

2nd Round: Devon H. - Flygon-ex δ /Gardevoir-ex δ
Devon must have copied Tina’s shuffle, because all of his vital cards were prized as well. Unable to run the bulk of his deck he was limited to sitting there watching me strafe his pokémon away.

3rd Round: Dr. Eggert - Crobat/Toxicroak/Cradily
The good doctor is stuck facing his weakness with way too much power and hit points. I think the deck is a sound idea; he just didn’t have the energy at the beginning and was forced to play from behind all game long.

4th Round: Eric - Meganium δ /Feraligatr δ /Rayquaza-ex δ
The most memorable part of this game was watching him play about twenty cards T2, and then having a genuine brouhaha between the pair right next to us. The deck suffered from being just a little too weak and a little too slow. I got behind early and was able to use my Rayquaza ex δ to get back and then ahead while the Flygons were getting ready to sweep up.

Semifinals: Tina M. again
The top four are all mentioned above. I get a luck start in game one while Tina gets jack, GG. Game 2, Tina gets it going before I, she has her Cloyster δ protection racket going, and I’m pretty much dead meat. Game 3 looks a lot like Game 2. She’s got her protection working, and I’m slowly being whittled away. I’m hanging with her much better than in game 2, but my Flygon-ex δ is loaded with twelve damage. Time gets called with us tied at three prizes and it’s my turn. I warp point up someone I can KO and let my wounded Flygon-ex δ do the dirty work to go ahead on prizes and shamefully slime my way into the finals. A two-minute longer round and it’s Tina in the finals instead of me. The only other instance I got a time-aided win was in the Texas state championships Swiss rounds against a superior trainer from Oklahoma. This one sort of made up for a time call that cost me the Sugarland CC a couple of seasons back.

Finals: Eric again
Neither game was all that memorable. Eric obviously was able to take care of business against the rest of the field; our games just looked like one guy with too many strong pokémon facing another guy who just couldn’t get it going. I’m sure we could play 100 matches, and I would be lucky to get more than 40 wins, but today was just my day.

My first big victory in a long time came because I got the right amount of luck against some pretty tough trainers. I wouldn’t have faired so well against any of those quality trainers without getting such a generous visit from the lady. Now I get to carry around my Victory Medal card with its wink-at-you Pikachu wherever I go.
Team Cook was at their best organizing another fantastic event. Does anybody know who one in Clear Lake on Sunday?
