This just in Geneon USA (Formerly Pioneer), the 3rd largest anime distributor in the USA, has told retailers that they must order stuff from them by this Friday. Any DVD dated for release after 11/9/07 will probably NOT come out from Geneon.

This is after Geneon tried to get ADV to distribute their stuff, which aparently fell through,

This will most likely cancel these releases until someone else gets them.

I don't think we will have to worry about really popular series (Hellsing Ultimate, Tenchi, Trigun) getting releases in the future. I would assume that either ADV or Funimation would get them.

It would be a shame if Americans never got to see the end of The Law of Ueki, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (When They Cry), and Rozen Maiden. All were great series. Karin was okay, but it's definately something you can live without. I asume Elemental Gelade has already been released fully since that's a box set.
 
Oh, Americans can still see all those. Just not legally.

Still, animé distributors dying like that isn't exactly good news regardless.
 
Especially big ones like geneon. Still can't believe the thing with ADV fell through. On the other hand, ADV has been contracting themselves out to other distributors as well.
 
Obviously this definately shows the negative effects of illegal downloads. Since some people download the fansubs & then never buy the official DVDs when they come out.
 
I dunno about that, fansubs raise interest in those animes in the first place. Otherwise, how would companies know which dvds would sell?

It used to be fansub groups would delete their animes the second they're licensed. There's always a few guys who ruin the party though.

Well, duh? I obviously meant legally. Besides, a lot of people don't know how to go about finding such things.

I'm not saying I've done this personally, but there are many shows some people wouldn't even be interested in if they had to pay for them. They may then see that they like them, and instead of a crappy 640x480 or whatever resolution, spring for the DVDs.

As far as I personally go, I'm pretty poor (spending more than $10 at once is a big thing for me), so whenever I buy something, I want to make it count. I don't have the money to chance buying something I've never seen, only to find that I don't like it. Being able to "try before I buy", as it were, helps tremendously, and can even get me spending money I wouldn't otherwise have spent.

Fansubbers deleting things when licensed right before the final episodes is rather annoying. Of course, when they get a C&D right before the last few episodes, it's still annoying, but understandable. Not that I'm speaking from experience, of course.

I still can't believe no one picked up Viewtiful Joe to finish. =(

I totally forgot that series even existed.
 
I am not saying that fansubbing is bad, in fact if it were not for fansubs. The USA might never have gotten anime at all. One of the largest distributors of anime (ADV) was founded by fans who were tired of having to watch 2nd-3rd or even 6th generation VHS tapes (copies of copies of copies etc.) Which were impossible to see the subtitles on.

I am just saying that people who don't buy the DVDs of a show that they enjoyed as a fansub, are not supporting the industry that made the shows they like to watch. Thus stuff like the closure of Geneon happens.

If you are not sure if you will like a show, fine watch a few episodes. Either rent, borrow, or even download them. Then if you do like the show, wait a bit, and then get the real DVDs. They have better sound, probably better video quality, and special features (like free stuff sometimes).

If you think that anime DVDs are too expensive, it is cause they need to pay for the licence. If every fansub watcher would buy the DVDs of the show they watch, then maybe anime would get cheaper. Although $25 for a 4-5 episode anime DVD is not too bad. Try paying like $40 for a 2 episode DVD in Japan, or at least $200 for a box set. In the USA some of the newer boxsets are like $40, which is about 10 times cheaper than buying the individual DVDs were (at the time). Some companies are re-issueing older series at a cheaper price. $14.99 for stuff like Fullmetal Alchemist, Basilisk, and others. (per DVD).

There is always the option of buying it used, whenever a boxset of an entire series comes out. Lots of people sell their old stuff in order to get the cool stuff that they give you with those boxes. Try Half-Price Books, E-Bay, or even Amazon. You don't allways have to pay full retail for a new (or slightly used DVD). I bought the 4th volume of L/R on Amazon for like $3.
 
That's like saying everyone who likes watching [insert favorite TV show] on cable should go out and buy the box set instead of recording it to DVD. Actually, it's more like saying they should only watch a little bit and then wait and buy the rest a year or more later.

The majority of fansubs are ripped straight from cable/satellite broadcasts. Now, plenty get re-released in higher quality once the DVDs start coming out, but that's another issue entirely.

Additionally, the quality difference between a decent fansub and a DVD is becoming smaller and smaller. You can obtain fansubs in crisp, beautiful 720p and unless you're an audiophile with a rediculous sound system, you'll never know the difference. Also, the decent fansub will always have nicer karaoke and typesetting for subtitles.

Not that I'm speaking from experience, but even these terrific quality video files are typically around or under 250kb. That's about 19 episodes per DVD compared to the usual 25-26. Of course, there are exceptions. Some, such as early Blue Dragon aren't encoded as well and go between 300-400kb. Again, I'm not speaking from experience.

Oh, they would have. They were getting it for ages before fansubs came along. What fansubs basically did was raise awareness that a lot of things in dubs were getting changed (there are no Macekres anymore; not even One Piece comes close to the horrors of the 1980s), and that there was good money to be had in keeping things as close to the originals as possible. If there was no awareness for the original versions, we'd just be getting more of the highly edited, "cartoons are for kids" dubs. Although even that's debateable, as I think movies like Akira and Ghost in the Shell predated the initial fansub heyday, and they're solidly mature films.

I remember seeing Gundam Wing on TV and being amazed that they kept the opening theme. Good times.

I remember being amazed they could swear on Cartoon Network. Also, Rhythm Emotion was the first J-pop song I ever heard.

EDIT: Just YouTube'd "Gundam Wing OP." I don't remember the Just Communication OP. The animation was familiar, but I don't remember the song.

OK then. I guess that is just my lack of info on the whole fansub thing, Since I don't watch them, Personally I would rather just buy a DVD and stick it in my DVD player, than bother spending loads of time locating, getting software, and downloading this stuff.

Of course maybe it is cause I usually don't bother getting seriously involved with shows that are more than 50 episodes long. I usually stick with the 13, 26, & 36 episode series. I only have 1 show that is over 100 episodes long, and that is Gatchaman (Battle of the Planets, G-Force).

I do watch Bleach on Cartoon Network, but have no plans to buy the DVDs.

If you are watching a show on TV, then it has been paid for already. By the sponsors, TV channel, etc,
Also when you buy something from the sponsors, you are suporting that program as well.
Plus you usually have to get cable/satelite to see most anime shows, so you pay for it then as well.
They do show anime on network TV, but like you said it is pretty edited. Like for example Sailor Moon was.

I was just trying to report some news that people might not have heard.
 
Maybe it's just where I live, but it's generally a lot harder to find a whole series in stores than it is online.

Oftentimes it's a case of there being like one three-episode DVD or whatever, and that's that. Not conducive to me ever watching the series when that's my only method of seeing it.
 
Again, not speaking from experience, but outside of fansubs there is no way to get my Super Sentai/Kamen Rider/Tokusatsu fix.

Because they only played the melody during the ED. On Cartoon Network, they never showed the opening if you guys remember.
 
Yeah only recently they actually started showing the intros to the shows. They used to just jump right into the episodes.
