Illegal Immigration Discussion

this is quite a controversial subject, and one that i am quite curious to hear the opinions of from other people
here is my opinion

i am 100% dead set against it

here is why, in a letter

Recently, large demonstrations have taken place across the country protesting the fact that congress is finally addressing the issue of illegal immigration. Certain people are angry that America might actually want to protect its own borders, might make it harder to sneak into this country and, once here, make it harder (as an illegal immigrant) to stay indefinitely.

Let me see if I correctly understand the thinking behind these protests.
Let\\\\\\\'s say I break into your house. Then, when you discover me in your house, you insist that I leave. But I say, \\\\\\\'I\\\\\\\'ve made all the beds and washed the dishes and done the laundry and swept the floors; I\\\\\\\'ve done all the things you don\\\\\\\'t like to do. I\\\\\\\'m hard-working and honest (except for when I broke into your house).

According to the protesters, not only must you let me stay, you must add me to your family\\\\\\\'s insurance plan, educate my kids, and provide other benefits to me and to my family (my husband will do your yard work) because he too is hard-working and honest, except for that breaking-in part.
If you try to call the police or force me out, I will call my friends who will picket your house carrying signs that proclaim my illegal right to be there.
It\\\\\\\'s only fair, after all, because you have a nicer house than I do, and I\\\\\\\'m just trying to better myself. I\\\\\\\'m hard-working and honest, um, except for well, you know.

And what a deal it is for me!!

I live in your house, contributing only a fraction of the cost of my keep, and there is nothing you can do about it without being accused of selfishness, prejudice and being an anti-housebreaker. Oh yeah, and I want you to learn my language so you can communicate with me! English is too hard for me to learn. You should also allow me to vote - in my own language, since I live in your house!

Why can\\\\\\\'t people see how ridiculous this is?

Please do not spam, and do not just randomly say for or against
post reasons, and discuss why
if this becomes a spam fest, i will get the thread locked if i have to weld it shut myself

with that in mind, discuss

Well I am glad people still want to come into the country.

As long as we don't give them any free benifits, I don't see why they can't become citizens right when the finish the test we have. Why wait 10 years?

The analogy in the OP isn't very well thought-out, but it does make the very valid point that America gives all sorts of benefits to illegal immigrants. On one hand, it calls them illegal... on the other hand, it makes itself a haven for illegal immigration...

I think actions speak louder than words. You people need to just throw open your borders and be done with it. It'd be more honest than this "illegal" immigration balogna.

Edited please use better abbreviations than the one you used.

I've never understood what all the hullabaloo about illegal immigration was all about. Sometimes I think comments like the one quoted in the OP are simply old-fashioned xenophobia rearing its ugly head.

I agree with Marril - maybe it is time to throw open the borders again.

The borders have been wide open for too long as it is. We need to close them up before we, as a country, are overwhelmed financially from the burdens of undocumented illegals. The hospitals have to care for them, the criminal justice system has to deal with them for free, the schools deal with them, even to the point where the american children are being "left behind" because the staff has to teach english to them. (Or learn spanish to deal w/ the hispanics....the largest base of illegals) The cost to each community and the government is enormous. Those funds could be used elsewhere, IF the borders were properly patrolled, illegals actually went thru the PROPER channels for legalization, etc!

Yah, but the problem is, the entire country is dependant on illegals to do their cheap labor. If the borders were closed even more, inflation would skyrocket for some of our most basic needs. Maybe we should go about fixing those problems first.

i think we need to adopt some of europe\'s laws on this
we had a discussion about this in my history class a year ago, and i learned that in germany you have one year to apply before they either forcibly throw you out, or imprison you
we dont have policies like this because too many white politicians are afraid to look racist, and thus turn their heads the other way

You also have a lot of rich white politicians (no pointing fingers, they're in both major parties) who employ illegal immigrants for gardeners, nannys, maids, cooks, etc.

AND YET THEY WORK FOR THOSE LOW WAGES! Its incredible how jobless people in detroit won't go out and get a job, yet people JUMP THE BORDER to work for LESS then minimum wage! its crazy! Maybe if we stopped giving people a free ride with minimum wage for the people who didn't even graduate high school, people would have robots do everything with all the smarter people. But you can make a VERY good living off of minimum wage flipping burgers. A large Little Ceaser pizza is only 5 dollars,(and the worst part is you don't even have to do a good job because of unions) less then an hour of work. Its just cause the gov taxes everyone like crazy. Stop taxes, get rid of minimum wage to encourage people to work harder, and it would solve a lot of problems.

Inflation is because of the federal reserve system and fractional reserve banking, just a add-on.

If you know the language of the country, I don't really see what the big deal is. New country, get a new driver's license, and bam. I don't know why it should take more then 6 years for someone from another country to become another citizen when they know the english language then many many people who were born here. It frightens me.

It seems only moral to say "would I do that in their situation". If you would, then what right do you have to criticise them and if not then really think about because it's a different side.

I mean just because we are born somewhere doesn't make us a citizen IMO.

technically?
my ancestors came from italy and ireland mostly
my irish family came over during the potato famine, and my italian ancestors came over when the equal rights movement was going on

my irish ancestors went through ****, they were mocked because of their accents, and it was very hard for them to get jobs and to feed their families
but they came over legally, learned english, and aclimated

my italian ancestors went through the equal rights movement siding with equal rights, my grand father actually lost his policeman job because he gave the medal of honor to a black police officer, which was considered taboo

my ancestors were driven through **** and back several times trying to get used to this country, why do cubans and mexicans get it so easy now?
NO EASY BUCKETS

gg

The illegals DO do the low-wage menial labor that we won't do ourselves. I'm pretty sure our government knows this, too. What's the incentive to drive out cheap labor?

Oh, and Richard, I hate to tell you this, but you pulled an anthoy with the title.

"Illegal"

If the government's going to be giving out benefits to people, it needs to be able to keep some track of them.

There are also the obvious security issues.

You have to be kidding me. Mexicans and Cubans get it easy in what ways. I am Mexican and proud of it. Just because your ancestors came before mine they still are immagrants, no matter how you see it. Everybody in this country is an immagrant except for Native Americans. My family was given nothing. PenguinMaster says it best, Hispanic people will do the hard-work to survive while others look down upon it and won't do it. If you where to take Mexicans out of this country the economy would fail but not because its weak but because of the people that are left in it. America just doesn't like change and no offense but even though your accents made you different you still spoke English, try having a language boundary. Your ancestors would be rolling in their graves if they were to hear this. They left Italy and Ireland for a better life for their families just like mine. You say that your ancestors were driven through **** and back several times trying to get used to this country, what do you think is happening to my people.

you guys get into the country illegally and are allowed to stay
thats easy buckets if i ever saw any

and BTW, my ancestors coming before yours IS relevant
my irish side helped to build this country when it was young, they were like the mexican workers back in the day
except they didnt get free health coverage, or free medical care, or even have homeless shelters
news flash, you and your people get it easy compared to the way my people had it

my family was given nothing as well, except while you and your people are allowed to speak there native language without problem, care to know what happened to my irish ancestors if they spoke with an irish accent?
they wouldnt get a job, and people would make fun of and harrass them
we did the same hard labor stereotypical mexican workers did back then, except we got even les for it, and werw also hated

im going to say this, i do NOT dislike immigrants
i dislike illegal immigrants
if you come over to this country with a visa, welcome to america, may your life be happy
hop over hte fence, and i hope you get deported

I can understand people coming to the country. After all, there are many things that are offered here, and they are more accessible compared to where they lived before. My hats off to those who do want to make their life, and any other lives that they are responsible for, better.

However, it is still illegal. While it's true that many illegal things happen here already, it should not be an excuse for this to continue.

Though, a few things I must ask (since I have failed to see it before in these discussions)...

How much does citizenship cost?
How long does it generally take to be qualified (if there is any qualification) for citizenship?
How many people (average if possible) get rejected (again, if there is any qualification process) every year?
