Gabe of Penny Arcade fame has an addiction to Pokemon that needs to be fed.

He is setting up an unofficial League in the [EDIT]WA[/EDIT] area. Details are in this post on the PA website, about 3/4 way down. Tuesday, Oct 23 6-8 pm is the first meeting. It's at the Comic Shop in Lynnwood.

Help feed Gabe's Addiction!!!

[EDIT]LOLz. I feelz st00pidz...[/EDIT]

I find it funny that he is trying to setup a league 3 miles from an already existing league. On the same night, at the same time.

The question then is...is he actually aware of the existing of the existing league? Looks like he isn't aware of the proper process to set up an official league, so I wouldn't be all that surprised.

Yah I wonder if they're just using pokemon to increase their egos "why should we go to their league if we can just use our star power to start our own?". If Phoenix Games has their league on the same day, everyone's obviously going to see Penny Anderson instead of Penny Arcade.

Yeah. Everyone wants to see Penny Anderson. Her 20's are all natural.

I emailed Gabe through the Penny Arcade site, with a link to the Phoenix Games league.

I wonder if Gabe is simply a lurker here, or if he actually posts. And if the latter...why he's keeping such a low profile.

My understanding was that it wasn't an official league or an attempt to set one up. It was just a few guys getting together to practice playing their decks and stuff.

I'd like to get better at this game or at least PLAY it, but the nearest league is very far away from me. I'm about ready to give up on this game.

Lol so did I Dave, so did I.

Start your own league, gather players, and every few months run a tournament. As your numbers increase, the amount of cool stuff you can do grows. But if you just want to play at a league and not grow one yourself, then you're kinda stuck to traveling.

You guys do know that the penny-arcade league is doomed to fail because they don't give out free swag for playing right? They're going to need to legitimize it with pop then get some league kits to make it work.

Penny Arcade league update

I stopped by to check things out tonight, and to invite the players there to our Prerelease for Secret Wonders this Sunday at Phoenix Games. There were more players present then I expected, but no one seemed all that serious about playing to me. There was a Parent and a kid about 7 trying to figure out how to play the Trading Figure game, but no other kids then that one. The other players were all guys in early to mid 20's. There were only 6 of them actually playing Pokemon Matches, and about 3 or 4 others were just milling about or reading.

It turns out that this league is only going to meet every other Tuesday, so I wish them the best and hope it lasts, but I got the feeling that most people were just Magic players trying out the Pokemon game for a lark, and I wonder just how serious the majority of them really are about playing the Pokemon TCG.

Darn right! And to think I bought that t-shirt at the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) just this year!

Although I am disappointed that they chose the exact same day and time for their league, it is my sincere hope that they are able to grow the Pokemon community up here because ultimately that means more people to play.

And that's a good thing!

I went onto the Penny Arcade forums to let the potential player base over there know about the prereleases this weekend. Let's see how serious they are about playing (or if they just want to see "Gabe" of PA).

Hey! They also have the same initials as I do. That's so wrong! (LOL)

PA vs PA

This is far too frightening. I got the same feeling of it not being a serious league. I think they will have a few players, but slowly decline. I saw TONS of unlimited cards, and lots of players using their "favorite" or "Charizard is the best card ever ZOMGBBQ" style decks. I saw a deck with 10 trainers.....none of which searched for anything.....

2 were potions.

If people play at a tournament, or hit the prerelease they will see the game in a better light. But it is the leagues first week, so maybe something interesting will happen.

Also, Penny and Jeff, Amber wants to be part of the challenge too. One month away right?

Yes we will invade en masse and see if anyone there actually knows how to play Pokemon or not. Then we will find out if this is a serious league or not. Go Team Phoenix!!

Most leagues start out with people with unlimited cards. Does the store sell newer cards? Then maybe the people will buy newer cards and start using them.

Funny thing is about the location of PA league...

Is that when we were first approached with the idea for us to start a Pokemon League here in the Everett area, the 1st store owner that we approached to host our brand new league was this very same store where Penny Arcade is now holding their Pokemon League in. But three years ago, this same store owner declined to be our host store because he said that he thought Pokemon TCG was dead and that no one played Pokemon anymore. So starting a League would be a waste of time.

Lucky he was wrong and the 2nd store owner that we approached was very willing to be our host store. Thanks to Brian and his store at Phoenix Games in Mukilteo, our league has grown in just three short years into one of the largest leagues in the state. Brain has been awesome as the host of our League, he always makes the players feel welcome. He is always eager to host a Prerelease or Primer event in his store, and actively advertises our league to potential new players who come to his store to purchase Pokemon TCG merchandise. His great attitude towards having a Pokemon league in his store has been huge part of why or league has been so successful. There is no way our league could possibly be as large as it currently is without all of his help and active participation. So we are very glad that our league turned out to be at Phoenix Games, and not at the first place that we asked to have it.

Brian rocks as a store owner. He puts up with so much from us some days. We need Poun back, Brian needs to regain his sidekick.
