Death Note dub

So it aired on Adult Swim last night, and I decided to watch it...

Overall, it was pretty good. Here's who we got...

Brad Swaile as Light
Alessandro Juliani as L
Brian Drummond as Ryuk

To be honest, there were a few minor spots where it was a little "meh." Other than that, it was worth watching

I youtube'd it. Song translation fonts look nice. Now, we just need the animated karaoke and dubs will have finally caught up with the fansub scene. . .

Dub's actually really good. Still need to work on pronouncing those Japanese words right though. Overall, I was impressed.

I didn't mind the voices actually, I just hate how they butchered the word "Shinigami." "Sheenygamy?" No, stop it.

They could have translated it literally to Death God, no one would mind.

Actually, the way they pronounced Shinigami didn't bother me at all. In fact, from what I remember, it sounded just about right. It was the mispronunciation names of people and cities that bothered me the most.

I've heard far worse than "sheenygamy". Sometimes they don't even really try to get it right. Sometimes they try too hard to sound Japanese and wind up failing horribly—it sounds funny when someone with an American accent drops right into the "Japanese that sounds like you're trying to lift your house" accent for about one or two words and then back into the American accent like nothing happened, but only the first few times. After that it's plain annoying.

I finally watched the first episode (never seen it before). I was surprised on how good the show is.

I just might have to purchase the series on DVD.

L's voice seemed alright. I just hope Near's is good too.

I still love how BADLY Light gets owned by L in that episode. :D

I dunno about getting this one on dvd though. Since I'm seeing it on TV, I really wonder how a dramatic series like this wears with repeated watching.

Having seen it on YTV naught but a few days ago, I'd rate it as one of the best dubs I've seen. Not the best, but anyone who complains about it is just being an elitist wap.

Seriously, they took pretty much every step they could've, from acknowledging that they're in Japan and speaking Japanese (heard as English for our benefit) to not mucking around the translations for the sake of rewriting the show.

EDIT: Kind of a day or so later, but I figured it better here than making a wholly new reply. Anyway, the thought had occurred to me that Death Note might actually be one of the few series that I actually prefer dubbed over subbed. That's the mark of a truly well-done dub right there.
