OK, so Magmortar is undoubtedly an awesome card, so I am combining it w/ BlazeCatty to see how it'll do.
Main attacker is Magmortar. By T3 you want to have a Magmortar and a Delcatty at least, if possible a Blaze would be nice. You want to constantly attack w/ Fireball Bazooka while charging up other Magmortars on your bench. They heal whenever you attach an energy to them, and using it's Fireball Bazooka you can set up some devastating KOs with its first attack.
Overall Magmortar is a beast, and somebody has to find a way to break it. I may take out Strength Charms for Buffer Pieces because they work nicely with Magmortar's power, and it's a 110 HP STAGE 1, pretty amazing.

exactly the deck I was planning on running as soon as secret wonders comes out. magmortor is gonna be a top contender for sure. I was also thinking about running srtaight magmortor 4-3-1 line and running 3 buffer pieces and 4 potions he would be untouchable with his power

I like the Typhlosion better too. It doesn't even have to be water - it can be special energies like DRE, δ Rainbow, Scramble, etc. Of course, everyone has their preferences and you should play what you like the best.

Once DP4 comes out, the new Blaze will definitely make firestarter Blaze the play. Right now Typhlo is probably better.

"that's it. What do you see in this guy?" Oh family guy. What? no one else got it? Really? oh well.
In all seriousness though, I think blaze is the right play in this deck unless water is REALLY popular in your area, and I see why you play mentor, but 4 seems like a little much to me. You might want to try out a Rossannes research or two.

Something's missing...
Could it be Smeargle to start the energy in the hand...?
Could it be Scramble to let Magmortars just spam Bazooka Blast...?
Could it be Roseanne's Research to assist your set up in almost every way...?
Could it be Night Maintenance to help recover from knockouts...?
Could it be the Pop5 Combusken whom has a Sand Attack...?
Could it be a tech Magmortar LV.X to burn then do 100 damage to a Blissey and potentially knock it out...?
[del]Could it be my sanity for typing like this for too long...?[/del]

TYPHLOSION FTW!!!
If you face EMpoleon, Gatr or anything else Water Deck, just come attack with it! It's SO annoying, when my Water energy goes to Discard pile... My Bro made that to me, and just CRUSHED me with Typhlosion when I was playing Empoleon...

I think people are looking at the wrong reason why Typholosion is more survivable against Water decks then Blaziken.

Weakness is significantly lower.
HP is high enough that Aqua Jet is NOT an OHKO on it (70 + 30 = 100, which is less then Typho's HP of 110)
Basics have higher HP and less weakness.

That's why Typholosion's better for the time being. DP4 gives us new Torchics to play with, so this might change for States, but for now, Typholosion is much more survivable. Not to mention that it's attack does more damage to the active (enough to kill one Kricketune after another. Fairly useful...)
