Take A Stand

Good Evening my fellow Americans, as I look around, i have found that it is time we had a little... chat (For our foreign brothers and sisters, this is not excluding you, you are more than welcome and encouraged to participate). As you know, the war in Iraq is not going well. Congress and our President keep pulling money out of cancer research, increasing our taxes, and pursue other more imaginative ways of draining our economy to fight this war. A war the American Citizens clearly DO NOT support. But you all know this already, so I shall arrive directly at the point.

Why do you let this continue?

Last I checked, it was the citizens of this country that were in charge of this country, and the President our chosen representative, so why is it that our president goes against what is OBVIOUSLY NOT what our citizens want without us saying a word? We whisper to each other that we are dissatisfied, but that is the problem, we whisper, we do not raise our voices to make ourselves heard, and this is where we run into a problem. Our country was formed because our citizens stood up against those who served themselves before they served their people, when did our citizens lose their backbone?

I am not inciting rebelion, I am not encouraging you to form riots and destroy public and private property. I am encouraging you to make yourselves heard, I am inciting you to all think freely, rather than just only listen to what our government decrees. Just remember, you are this countries government, and the most important part of it, you are the one in charge of this country. So make a stand, and makeyourself heard.

Thank you for your time.

Oh boy, another war topic.

Too bad this is a PG board, or else I'd make some pretty high quality analogies to back up my somewhat unique pro-occupation stance.

Too late.

Wow.. what does your mother think..Wait! don't answer..

Please vote for Ron Paul!!!He is our last chance at a Libertarian goverment.

Back to back posts merged. The following information has been added:

Yeah, I totaly agree with ya.

It's only a matter of time, when there will be a violent overthrow of our goverment.

It's simple really as why nobody really does anything: they just don't care. Sure, you hear people disgruntled at policies and make general complaints and stuff, but they never really do anything about it. Just my thoughts.

I diagree. People do care, it's just that they are scared of the repercussions. How can one man or women change an entire goverment, without the use of force?

For the record, I do care for the wellbeing of this country; it’s my God damn priority as a United States citizen to do so, and SHOULD be everyone else’s too! But as I mentioned, how does one make a change with no political power and expect others to follow?

I think South Park got it right so many years ago when the war just started:

"We're THAT much more of a powerful country if we can seem to be for war, yet against war at the same time!"

But anyways, not all of America is for pulling out right now, and for a damn good reason: our standing in the world would be far worse if we left a country in shambles than if we stayed, made half the world angry, and helped stabilize Iraq. Not like stabilizing a country stricken with ethnic war is an easy thing, mind you...

On the flipside, when we loosely "finish" the job, we certainly can't stay there forever. The one main issue in American policy is that by having military bases EVERYWHERE, we essentially are the world police (i.e., BAD).

C'mon, guys: while going to war with poor evidence is a terrible idea, leaving a country to be overrun by the special interests of the entire Middle East is just as bad. My mama always said that two wrongs don't make a right. ;x

You know what there is proof that Bush mislead the people so that we would go to war...
The Iraqi people should want to fight this themselves and not rely on the US to do it for them. Saddam was a bad person and did commit criminal acts toward humanity blah blah blah. But hes' gone now. I think it is time to stop spending all that money yes.

It is hard to come to a complete conclusion who is going to spend the least amount of money with our Tax Dollars though. The democratic party wants to even spend more money with our tax dollars on socialized medicine. Hilliary is a terrible speaker, she can't think on her feet. McCain and Rudy are a little bit to liberal to be Republicans.

Who to vote for in 2008? I am not sure.. But whatever I will be voting like I did in 2004.

He's right you know, we're stuck there. I still think Bush has a faulty brain for going in, but we can't just up and leave. How you do finish the job, and how many body bags it will take, is a whole different matter however.

Yes we should finish up the job that we started there. War is never a pretty sight and is hard to deal with if it goes on too long. We should at least try to rebuild Iraq and let it be stable since we went in and destroyed it. Yet the war that was started was agent terrorism(or so I thought). Yes Saddam was a bad person but we never got the guy who keeps targeting our country and those who he thinks that are "evil" ......Beladen. I truly feel sorry for those in Iraqi, or any one who is Islam. That religion is really getting a beating because of these few extremest. I can't say that I practice Islam, but some people out there feel if one is bad they are all bad. I think some times people get all mixed up in this war that the forget how this war was started. I just pray this war in Iraq will end soon so we all can really focused on the true threat.

I do not recall saying that we should withdrawl my fine fellows, I merely asked why when our citizens are agaist a war that we are still sending so many resources to it, and why no one speaks out against it. My appologies for any confusion that this may have caused you.

pulling out of iraq wouldnt leave it in shambles. what do you take the iraqis for? you dont think they can run a country?

I think that the Iraqi people are like everyone else: a complex social order full of petty disputes. The only difference is that their petty dispute is a little thing called devastating ethnic warfare. The Sunni/Shia conflict is like Catholics and Protestants, only much worse, more chaotic, and has the Kurds and their interests thrown in, to boot.

So many interests are at work in the Middle East right now: Syria's, Iran's, Turkey's, Saudi Arabia's, Al Qaeda's, Moqtada Al-Sadr's Mahdi Army, the Kurdish radicals, the displaced Baath'ists, OURS, and so many others. Leaving Iraq now would be like us allowing Tokyo to get devastated by Godzilla...The only difference is that "Godzilla is a metaphor for messy, divisive Middle Eastern politics.

I'm proud that our troops, the most militaristic in our society, understand what it takes to preserve peace. The beautiful thing is that they aren't even being forced to go, and that's just how it should be.

As for your specific question, V...The reason we're still there is because Americans are generally against occupation, but at varying levels. For example, like I said in my first post, our reasons for war were poor, and I'm against permanent occupation, but not against what we're doing right now. My opinion is just one of thousands of variants on the same issue, and because it's such a grey issue, policy simply will not change. In other words, we all don't agree on how to deal with Iraq, so we shouldn't "take a stand" until an educated, united opinion actually IS formed. You can dislike why we're there, but still want to stay.

My South Park quote is SO topical, because it basically said it all: people have so many opinions about war that the government _can_ do whatever it wants in between big election years (and longer!).

Didn't you say your vote was decided solely based on the candidates' stances on abortion? Or is that someone else I'm remembering?

They're free to speak out against it, but that doesn't change that the American citizenship is basically powerless. It's how it's always been, so as long as the people are comfortably numb there's no complaint. It's only when their elected dictators (for want of a more fitting term) make decisions they don't like that they realize the "democracy" they vehemently defend is in reality nothing of the sort.

I basically said the same thing you did, Marril, but I disagree on extent. The electorate is an example of the people not having direct command of government, and essentially when any republic's population is divided, the officials have to make decisions on their own. However, people have at least technical influence over our system by holding their elected officials accountable. If people are "comfortably numb," then of course they won't say anything, but if enough people begin to agree that change is necessary, then change _is_ probable.

For good or bad, the people's will has influenced the elite's decisions, and will continue to do so.

Not me you are thinking of, I would never vote for somone just because on one issue. :D .. Being that I live in the state of Texas it doesn't really matter IF I did vote Democratic/Repubican/Other

But you do remember partially right, I am Pro Life :thumb:
However when it comes to ****, life threatening issues I do believe there are sometimes when abortion is justified. I just don't think it's right aborting a child because a girl was sleeping around, or it is incovient at this time, or family planning as they call it.. Pfft.
