I always shuffle when the deck is offered to me. I've had only one player complain at which point I told him "Either I can shuffle it or a judge can shuffle it, but it's getting shuffled." Funny funny stuff.

Actually I love Hedgefoxidna's deck idea. I don't see how such a deck, built to win, is in violation of the "spirit of the league" at all.

That's why I recommend just splashing it in. But first, it's easy to get a Pidgey. Just pull it with the Paras attack. It's easy to get a Pidgeot - Celio's Network. The tough thing is getting the Rare Candy. Once you have Pidgeot, getting the 2nd Stage 2 out is no problem.

Let me say this about Pidgeot - I like it, a lot. But lately I've been going with a 1-0-1 line (and 4 Rare Candies for it and other things). It's not a card that you should rely on having, but when you have it, it's pretty incredible. You're able to get exactly the card you want EVERY turn...

Next time, give the players the choice of either the scholarship money or more product. Their choice. I'm sure they'll find something to complain about anyway.

I know this has been touched on, but did Gencon 2003 kind of warp our sense of "fair prizes"? Let's not forget that Nintendo gave out (per my calculations) over $100,000 in scholarship money. That may not be boxes of cards, but I don't think it's a bad deal.
