I think that focussing on discarding enough magikarp would make it more effective, and just using the hippowdon Lv.X to set your opponent back in tools and energy wise.(since gyarados doesnt use any energy) However seeing your name and your avatar i can imagine you wanting to keep hippowdon...

I like your twist sir, but it's a shame that those spiritombs die so quikly..... I use Electrode SF (with radiance) in my version. It already has free retreat and it has a higher hp thus a longer time of service. Maybe you can mix the two for great early game locking and late-ish game damage...
