1st PokeGym Report Ever - RA's PreRelease

It's crazy that this is my first PokeGym tourney report eh?

I usually don't want to reveal deck ideas so I can recycle them in future tourneys, but was a preRelease on Mother's Day and it builds up to an exciting ending. So, here you go:

Richmond, VA Unleashed PreRelease Report for 5/9/10 - Sunday

MOTHER's DAY! <== remember this, it'll come into play later...

Well, I couldn't wait to get a chance to play in an Unleashed PreRelease because I just thought that the cards in this set were EPIC for limited format play.

I mean.. LOOK at what this set has available for a prerelease:
  1. Rare Candy
  2. Life Herb
  3. Super Scoop Up
  4. Judge
  5. Interviewer's Questions - search out energy from TOP 8 (in a 40 card deck??)
  6. Good Rod - really? a trainer AND a mini TSD recovery card in one?
  7. Engineer's Adjustments + Energy Returner = PreRelease Claydol
  8. Emcee's Chatter & Cheerleader's Cheer - Nice little draw supporters
  9. Dual Ball - Talk about set up speed!
Then there's the set up BASICS like:
  1. Stantler
  2. Plusle
  3. Minun
  4. Dunsparce
Then the 1 and 2 energy attackers and BIG Primes

Man, I COULD NOT WAIT to give this a shot!!

The night before, I passed around the 18 packs to the family that I had from judging the previous prerelease and we had a "Family PreRelease" tournament with just the three of us.

This really gave me some insight as to which cards are better for limited and which ones weren't all they cracked up to be.
Dunsparce, for example, NEVER got used by any of us; I prob would've deck a bunch of Dunsparce had we not had this little experience :)

Anyway...

My league's newbie juniors were all excited that they would be traveling to the nearest VA prerelease for their first PreRelease (1 hr 15 mins away). My league was responsible for 8 juniors, 2 seniors, and 3 masters. I was so proud and happy to see them all there...

but.. Anyway...

I get around the room talking to all of my excited league folks and my wife and daughter go ahead to get us registered up. Before I know it, the chart goes up and we all need to take our seats to get started.

I end up being seated next to my wife (ya think it's a last name thing? :p ) and across from the guy I judged Regionals with (Tim C.). All I wanted was a Tyranitar Prime for my daughter. She hadn't pulled one at the previous PreRelease and I wanted her to be excited since it was THE ONLY card from set she was excited about getting.

Well, I crack open the packs and discover that I'd whiffed on the Ttar. My wife is like "no Ttar." I did, however, grab two Primes from the first two packs: Kingdra, Ursarig. My wife showed me her Ursarig (that makes about 4 over 2 weekends now :/ ) My daughter holds up a Kingdra Prime yelling "LOOK DADDY!" She looks happy. So, I am now happy. Game On. I can focus.

I threw away the wrapping, set aside the search for the elusive Ttar Prime, and started working on putting a deck together.

I see a couple of water lines, some Ursarig stuff, and a 3-1-2 Kingdra line (1 Prime, 1 Regular Kingdra).

Yep. I threw that together, tossed in EVERY trainer/supporter regardless of what it was and I'm like "WATER ENERGY and till I got 40 cards and I'm done."

I wait on the family. My daughter was excited and CRAZY DISTRACTED by having a friend at the event and she really didn't care about the cards at this point. She and her friend were all like "I like this Pokemon, you should put him in there too..." I knew she was on the happy path to 0-X, but she was having fun, so be it... ( thank to Rainbowgym, I have that 'let her live' attitude now :p )

I shoot around some talkin' and jivin' with the peoples until the family is done decking and we head out to Five Guys for the lunch break (D.Tuskey, PTO announced that the lunch break immediately followed the Deckbuilding time.. be back at 1:00 p.m.)

While at five guys we're all like "WHAT DID YOU GET?" and my daughter shows us the most epically WEAK 40 card PreRelease deck ever. She shows me her "leftover cards" and they were BEAST! She trashed a Torterra line, a Floatzel line, and about 6 Trainer/supporters.
On the other hand, she, at least had a few solo evolve lines (Blastoise, Kingdra, and Shaymin - a bunch of random stuff I didn't understand, ALOT of energy, and about 4 trainers :/)

I pull out my deck and thumb through it while BRAGGING to my wife that I actually pulled a 3-1-2 Kingdra line. Then, I stop. I thumb through it again... and again. That's when I realize, there's NO 3-1-2 because I never pulled a SEADRA!! What's worse, is those trainer/supporters I didn't even bother to look at did NOT contain a single Rare Candy! RUT ROH!!! I look over at my daughter who has a Seadra on her side of the table. She looks up me and, without hesitating says "NO TRADING DADDY! That's what you always tell me!" I wasn't even trying to go there, but I must've had some look of despair for her to hit me with the PreEmpted caution! (LOL!)

Well... I reach into my deckbox (where I kept the cards from the 6 packs that I didn't deck and did an emergency fix)

I ended up throwing away the 5 Kingdra line cards and throwing in another Octillery Line and all of the Teddiursa and Ursarig I could find there; I had 2 teddy's and 1 more Ursarig (reg)

So, my deck ACTUALLY got super solid because of this fix!

3-2 Octillery
3-3 Ursarig (!!!! - 1 Prime !!!)
1 Shaymin
3 Stantler
1 Manaphy

the rest were whatever trainers/supporters I pulled and alot of Water Energy! I had no Rare Candy, No Pokemon Circulator, and no Super Scoop up. I did have 3 Judges (woot!! 1 RH) and 2 Life Herb among other things.

At this point, I'm feelin pretty good that the Ursarig line + Shaymin would pretty much make me hard to beat. Welp, we get back and match ups are up early!

Game 1: RA vs. Brooks (new guy)

I have a lone Teddiursa, 1 water energy and ALOT of trainer/supporters. I go first. I attach and I'm like "PASS!" He has only 1 basic, attaches and attacks. I draw, top deck and bench Teddi #2, double heads on Dual Ball, bench two Remoraids. Play down a Judge... I play that Judge and I get Ursarig Prime AND Ursarig regular. Evolve Active to Reg Ursa and attack (he has two energies now).
Dude gets nothing. He benches a Stantler, retreats the active Cherubi ( i think) and call for family.

At this point I'm just attacking w/ active ursa and attaching to benched Ursa Prime. He's too far behind to get through it. 4 prizes to none. GG 1-0

Game 2: RA vs. Branden

I only see this guy once in a while nowadays. The guy is ultra fun to play against, because he's very silly and jokes around the entire time you're playing; he does this whether he's winning or losing. He's been playing the game for years, but doesn't like to play in tourneys other than PreReleases.

Well, Johnny "Time For Pain" R. is the judge. The guy calls over Johnny like "come look at this. It's the WORST start ever!!" I said "Johnny, this isn't even fair." I show Johnny my STANTLER starter and.. this is my starting hand.

1 Water
2 Octillery
1 Ursarig PRIME
1 Ursarig Reg
1 Interviewer's Questions

That's a wrap man. Nobody can beat this unless they drop a judge.
I go first. I have active Stantler active, he has RIOLU. I'm thinkin' Lucario is a BIG problem for me if he get that thing going! I call for family: One Teddi, One Remoraid. He draws, drops plus power, attaches to Riolu, does FOURTY with the weakness + PP! He has no bench. I draw. Attach to bench Teddi, drop Dual ball ==> 2 heads get Teddi and another Remoraid. Evolve 1 to Prime other to Octillery. Pass.
He KO's the Stanter but has NO BENCH!!

I draw, attach to active Octillery, evolve the planet, and just snipe at the Riolu. He draws, whiffs on bench and attacks for pointless damage.
I draw KO w/ Octillery. GG. 2-0

Game 3: RA vs. Hunter D

This is a new PokeDad from my league. This is only his 2nd Organized Play tournament event (his first was 0-X drop at Regionals) and he's undefeated at this point! <== YAY!

Well, he put together a great deck! He used Crobat Prime, Ursarig (reg.), and Cherim. We start, he has cherubi active, I have a Remoraid. My starting hand was, Ursarig Prime, Octillery, an energy, and a bunch of Trainer Supporters. He goes first, attaches psychic energy and "PASS."

I draw, hit 1 heads on Dual Ball, bench tedi. Another Dual Ball, 1 heads. Bench Remi #2. Attach to active Remi.. 10.. go.
He draws, benches WIDE out with Zubat, Tedi, Dunsparce, DROPS A JUDGE ... O..M..G!!... that destroyed me right there! I draw like 2 energy and 2 energy retrivers :/ He whiffs on the grass energy and the Cherim. He's like "... pass." Wow!

I draw, I've got nothing, but I attach to benched Tedi.. "10. Go."
He draws, attaches to Dunsparce, retreats active and does like 3 turns of "attach to benched thing and Draw w/ Dunsparce."
In the meantime, I top deck an octillery and start hitting things for 30. I was able to KO the bat before he could get out the prime. Then, I drop my own judge and EVOLVE THE PLANET. My bench is like UrsPrime, Urs, Octillery #2, Manaphy. I don't even use the Ursarig. I just snipe with Octillery, retreat to other Octillery and snipe for KO until I draw from 4 basic KOs. It was hard to snipe w/ Octillery and use my energies to retreat active until the 2nd Octillery came along, but rollout Octillery swarm is LETHAL in a PreRelease. GG 3-0

Game 4: RA vs. Brian

Here's a dad that plays with his kid alot. He attends leauge sporadically. So, I know his face, but never really got solid on his name. It's always "HEY MAN! Haven't seen you in awhile! Wanna play?" I usually forget his name :/ Anyway, he starts an ONIX!!! Ok. Game plan is Octillery snipe until I get Ursa up. I get off to a quick build and I put 30 on Onix right away. UH OH .. energy drought! My bench is 2 Ursa, 1 Stantler, 1 Remoraid. I can't get to an energy card to save my life and his Onix is starting to get UGLY! He can't draw into the Steelix, so I get time to draw into a supporter. I get 2 of those Supporters that lets you discard an energy to draw 4; I have no energy :/

He needs alot of energy to attack with that Onix and I can't hit it because Octillery switches after he hits :/ Well, the Judge have me an energy, so I attach to Octillery and wait for the active Stantler to go down. Dude atttaches to Onix, EVOLVES TO STEELIX and I'm like "RUT ROH!!" He's smash city now!

Here's the smartest move of the day. I promote Octillery #1, drop SHAYMIN and move a 3rd energy (that I had put on a Tedi at some point and I use Octillery's 2nd attack that forces Steelix to flip a coin in order to attack back. He hit me with the first attack (he rolled heads on the effect) and then he can't KO Oct in next 2 turns; He rolls tails twice FTL. I brought down his steelix Prime with using the Octillery's defensive attack and now I'm putting energies onto my Ursarig Prime!

Oct goes down and I simply promote Ursarig Prime FTW. The guys attacks the Prime and Ursa is just SMASHIN stuff with that Body loading on the damage. GG 4-0.

Game 5: RA vs. Rogue Blissey (yes... my WIFE)

ON MOTHER's DAY... I play the other undefeated: My wife. Johnny R. and David T. are like... Mr. W. you NEED to lose this. You know this right? My wife is like " I want to play this one out." Well, that means she doesn't want me to scoop and she wants me to play her for real. So, this is pretty much a lose-lose situation for me (LOL!).

I get a GOD hand, a GOD setup and I drop a JUDGE. She looks at her hand, at her cards on the table and says "aw man..." From this point on, she whiffs on just about everything :(

The guys vowed to tell THE WORLD that "ON MOTHER's Day, A PokeGym Mod played the mother of his child and beat her!" I did feel like a jughead :/

GG?? I probably should have done some acting and "whiffed" on stuff man... but...
5-0

I guess I won the prerelease... lol

My extra 2 packs had nothing at all (I think one didn't even have rares :/)

My wife had loads of fun. She thinks it's SO COOL that we were the top two on Mother's Day. We went to IHOPs and tried those new "Pancake Stackers" with the cheesecake filling (wooot!!).

Hope you all had fun at your own PreReleases too!

RA

PROPS:

Johnny "Time For Pain" R. trading me the Ttar Prime so my daughter could have 1 (even though he had absolutely no need for another Ursarig Prime)

My wife for being a true competitor (she wouldn't let me just scoop for the Mother's Day win)
My Warsaw League taking 1st/2nd in Juniors and 1st/2nd in Masters
EPIC Set for Limited
Amazing 3-3 Ursarig Line pull.
Octillery FTW?

SLOPS:

Actually being so comptitive that I beat my wife on Mother's Day :/

Aw, no props for me trading you a Ttar prime? Oh well.

Still GJ for going undefeated even though you should've scooped. LOL.

See you at BR's!

I love Ursring!! If I didn't go for Lanturn so hard last week I would have gotten it too. Props on the win and on making it a family affair. It's always cool when your wife won't let you scoop to her.

Guys: SHE HAS TO WIN THIS SO THAT SHE HAS AN AWESOME MOTHERS DAY
Her: OMG I MADE IT TO TOP 2 WITH MY HUBBY <333!!! BEST DAY EVER

Good times.

Looks like you had an absolute blast, R_A. Nice read, and I'm glad to hear you got your daughter her T-Tar. ^ ^

I usually don't read Pre-release reports, but it was a good read nonetheless. It's nice to see some Pokemoms rocking the tournament scene (don't have very many of those in Ontario) - congrats to you and your wife, and glad to hear your daughter got her T-tar prime :)

R_A: You flail like a bunch of magicarps and let the Big Momma win on Mother's Day silly wabbit! Glad the family had fun. That is what a PR is all about!

Keith

Sorry you couldn't make it, Z!! Kayleigh (from Chesapeake) made it to both Fairfax on Sat and Midlo on Sun!!

... and, William...... :nonono:

Ha, I wanted to come, but my mom isn't a Pokemom any more so she wouldn't have had as much fun haha

*Not sure who William is*

Sorry I couldn't make it again. Right now I'm fluctuating between 0 and 10 dollars to my name... :(
Props to you and the lil' Missus, Mr Washington.

Ha, I wanted to come, but my mom isn't a Pokemom any more so she wouldn't have had as much fun haha

*Not sure who William is*

That's funny. Everyone calls me "Mr. Washington" in real life because of the school teacher status, so I do get an occastional "I've gotta play William W... who's that?" ahahahaha

Yeah. Mr. Tuskey AND Johnny were like "really? You're trying to win this? REALLY?"

My wife knows me TOO WELL for me to fake a loss. She said she wanted to play it out, so I had to play it out there. She was beaming the entire day though just from the thrill of having the Mr vs. Mrs. top 2 :)
