Gyarados, while a reasonable card itself, always suffers from the bad previous stage (Magikarp 30HP).
The body is great when using the Flail Magikarp (MT).
The attack 80 for 4 is not that great, to many Pokemon can deal that damage for less energy, however the additional effect of the attack can cause your opponent big problems.

If you want to play this card you need switch/warp point and if it returns into the format Rainbow nrg.
With each Gyarados I have a feeling the designers really don't want the card to be played.
Why not give Magikarp some extra HP like 40 or 50. Lots of basics got extra HP with the start of Diamond and Pearl.

Modified 5/10
Unlimited 1/10

Finally, we see a non-delta and somewhat playable Gyarados. Dragon DNA is a very cool Poke-Body, giving Gyarados the potential to make Flail a viable option late-game. His own attack, Enrage, is overpriced for the damage it deals, but has an interesting effect of discarding cards from your opponent's hand for each Heads you flip until you get Tails (and it obviously fails if you flip Tails first). But like all Gyarados cards, it suffers from several negative factors:

1. A horrible Basic form (Magikarp still somehow never gets past 30 HP)
2. Costly attacks and high Retreat
3. A potentially common Weakness

Modified - 3/10 (There are much better Water type Pokemon to use here)
Limited - 9/10 (Believe me, abusing Dragon DNA + Flail here is awesome, providing you get to evolve into Gyarados)
Unlimited - 1/10 (why would you use it here?)

Gyarados makes me smile but also makes me cry. At first glance you might think he's awful, or you might think he's the best slice of bread in the world. But I feel he's a little in between.

Gyarados has 120HP, which someone could have expected since the Pokemon from the Diamond and Pearl series have increased HP. This puts Gyarados on par with many older, still modified, stage 2's that it might run up against and is only 10 HP less than the stage 2's he might see from the recent sets (Empoleon, Feraligatr, etc).

Gyarados has a great Poke-Body. It's called Dragon DNA. Even the name of it is awesome! To sum up his Poke-Body, Gyarados can use any attack of the Magikarp underneath it. And if it does use any attack of the Magikarp underneath it, and if that attack does damage to the Defending Pokemon (metarule here), then that attack will do 30 more damage to that Pokemon. That's pretty nice. Imagine doing an attack for 60 and actually pulling off 90 damage. Imagine doing an attack that does 90 and actually pulling off 120 damage!

But that won't happen...because Magikarps are pretty lame.

It amazes me how weak Japan wants to keep Magikarp. With the release of the Diamond and Pearl series of sets, many basic Pokemon got a boost in the HP department, usually going from 50HP to 60HP. What did Magikarp get? Nada. Basics are doing more damage on average and Magikarp's 30HP isn't going to stand up to most early attacks. How can a deck get moving if it's legs are swept out from underneath it? That's the big flaw with Gyarados. Not the Gyarados itself, but the Magikarp it has to rely on to get setup and to use it's attacks.

Not only that, but the Magikarp in Mysterious Treasures only has 1 useful attack, and it's other attack is really to risky to try to use. And since Magikarp d from Holon Phantoms can do a MASSIVE 10 damage for one colorless, Gyarados just doesn't have the tools to make it really playable imho.

But Gyarados has an attack too, but don't be surprised if the attack is mediocre. The attack is called Enrage, and it does 80 damage, which is very decent, but for 4 energy, which is not. The effect of the attack, which lets you flip coins until you flip tails and discard a card from your opponent's hand, is very good, even with the "if your first flip is tails, Gyarados is confused" clause. There are many ways to get around confusion. But you can't get around a high energy cost easily and effectively, and that is another department where Gyarados, as a card, fails.

Weakness to Electric +30 was expected. I mean, Gyarados is 4x weak to Electric in the video games. But this is a little above norm since it's been a trend since the release of the Diamond and Pearl series to give basics weakness +10, stage 1s weakness +20, and stage 2s weakness +30. There are a few cards that stick out with differences and Gyarados is one. But I tell you, +30 is NOWHERE near as bad as 2x. So even weakness isn't that big of a problem. Gyarados would be a great card if it's worst quality was it's weakness.

Resistance to fighting is pretty nifty. It's been a trend recently to give any water pokemon that is part flying in the video game (Mantine, Gyarados, etc) resistance to fighting. Sure, it's not the same ole' -30 that we are used to, but any resistance is better than none. And fighting was at least decently popular near the end of the last season with all the Lucario variants running around.

Retreat of 3 is a bummer, but it's expected. Gyarados is HUGE. Water Pokemon are gifted with ways to reduce retreat cost currently, so his retreat isn't even that big a problem.

It's just the stupid Magikarp! Where's Dick Cheney when you need him!? Haha, okay, that might have been too much there.

I guess I should rate the card now.

Unlimited: Who plays unlimited?
Limited: Pre-Releases are already over...oops.
Modified: Okay, the important format. Gyarados is a very decent card struck down not by it's own flaws but the flaws of it's impossible to elude, lower stage. If Magikarp was more decent, Gyarados would inherit those qualities and would be a much more playable card. But alas, Magikarp is crap and Gyarados is stuck relying on it's 4 energy attack to do anything decent. Yeah, it can hit you for big damage when it's about to get KO'd! Oops. It's a sad story of a Pokemon with a lot of potential being defeated by outside forces. Maybe Japan will give Magikarp a chance to be decent some day. Until then, I have to give Gyarados...

Gyrados MT

honestly, i see alot of people hyping and playing this card
the only problem i see with him is the pokemon im predicting will be popular in the next format

-cessasion crystal makes this pokemon dead in tha water, and completely useless, as does latilock
-lucario laughs at this if they have the lv x
-electavire laughs at this
-anything that can snipe laughs at magikarp

and honestly, if you come acrossed a pure bench damage deck, you could be in trouble
gyrados only does damage when damaged, so if i go for your bench, your only option is to buld up 4 energy to take me out, at which point i promptly kill you ASAP

good idea, poor format to try an execute it in

Unlimited: if you have a magikarp survive one turn, you get a cookie and deerve to win
1/10
Draft: you pull a line of this card, you play it. honestly, play it just for flail, it will work
8.5/10
Modified: for reasons stated above...
6/10

Gyarados MT's may sound really good but a smart player would know not to attack gyarados, unless of course they are brave enough with the Cessation Crystal attached. But the problem is that your opponent will use windstorm to blow off the Cessation Crystal so you really have to know when to attack it. His attack for 4 energies is pretty high but it sure pays off when you get flip those heads and for each head you roll, you get to discard one card in your opponents hand. Bench sniping decks like Empoleon and Lucario can give him trouble since the player is smart enough to not attack Gyarados. If only rainbow would come back, this card would have been a power house. I suppose you could replace that for Jolteon* at the moment

Modified- An ok card but there are way to many sniping moves out there and Gyarados wont be able to make any use out of that. Also, being weak to Electivire is pretty bad at the moment since there's alot of hype on going on for Electivire. 2/10

Unlimited- Rainbow + his Poke-Body would mean that he does and auto 40 damage. Although, you can easily abuse it with jolteon* as well. This card would be a good counter against decks like Rock Lock, Raieggs, and Absolutions. 10/10

Limited- This card will probibly see in play since alot of players dont really look up the newer cards and they just fall right into their traps. An attack for 80 damage is alot when they're arent a whole lotta cards that do that in limited format. 5/10

Gyarados is decent, but nothing too special. His biggest downfall for the Dragon DNA combo is anything playing Lati-Lock, which shuts off your ability to do the attack completely. Cessation Crystal hinders you, as well as Imprison (not common, but still). Rainbow Energy isn't even in the format so self-damaging is pretty limited, with the best self-bench hitter being Whiscash MT (PLAY IT!) and with enough damage built up it's even easier to knock the Gyarados out. Weakness to Electivire does suck, and a 30 HP basic is just ASKING to lose to Mario/Wild Kick. Sometimes I'd seriously rather play the delta karp and just enjoy 40 for 1 because of the bad self-damaging stuff. Its own attack is mediocre since you can't even boost it with one water, and if you get one tails you're confused.

Modified: 4/10
Maybe when we get new cards. Right now I'm just not seeing it.

Limited: 10/10
I'm giving everything decent 10/10 because if you pull a basic and an evolution you deserve to win a game.

Unlimited: 0/10
Autoloss to Goop Gas Attack!

I don't think it deserves a 2 even... Magikarp is one of the worst basics in the game. Gyrados doesn't have that many great attacks either.

Limited: 8/10
Should you draft this it's good due to nothing in limited doing over 120.

Unlimited: 1/10
Um, this card is terrible when you could be stopping trainers and OHKO'ing.

Nothing special about this Gyarados. I really don't have much to say except that the attacks could of been better. Don't get me wrong, the Body and HP are nice, but I feel that those attacks aren't that great on Gyarados.

Modified: 3/10 - Unless there's a card in a later set that will back this thing up, I really don't think we're going to see a lot of this one.
Limited: 7/10 - Since Draft is completely different, if you get him and Karp, you'll probabally have some fun with them.
Unlimited: 0/10 - There are much better choices than this card.
