A first-time Master's T32 SoCal Regionals Report- Gothitelle

My first major tournament as a master! So, after the 4 and a half hour drive, I arrive at the hotel and see some friends from league going into the elevator, I call them over and end up grabbing dinner with all of the Las Vegas competitors before the big day. This regionals I decided that a tank would be the best play, so I grabbed Gothitelle and tested about a week before in preparation for the tournament, and felt relatively comfortable with all of my matchups.

DAY 1:

Round 1 vs. Lauren w/ Cinccino/Samurott
She goes first starting with smeargle, and I have a terrible hand: DCE, a gothitelle, a reuniclus, 2 candy, and a juniper, with an active zekrom, this hand had 0 outs. She opts to use portrait and is forced to use juniper, discarding 2 samurotts, a rare candy, and a cinccino in the process. I top deck the collector, and proceed with the turn 2 lock, top decking the Tropical beach a few turns later, and proceeding to win with her 3 prizes all being given to her for twins drops. 1-0

Round 2 vs. Ruben w/ Donchamp/vileplume
He goes first and is able to get turn 2 plume, completely locking my goths. The lock that goth provides does nothing against plume decks, and the 130 HP is laughable compared to machamp’s max damage output of 150, I had never tested this matchup, and take my first loss. 1-1

Round 3 vs. Brandon w/ Magneboar
I was terrified going into this round, he goes first and is able to set up 2 magnezones and an emboar before I get my gothitelle out, and is able to get one more out as well as a reshiram while under the lock. He takes 4 prizes to my one, but I had tested this matchup fairly well, and knew what I had to do. He had no energy discarded, 3 on the field, and I believe 11 lost zoned after I had promoted my blissey, zekrom, and 2 gothitelles, forcing him to waste 3 energy on each, as well as forcing him into a solosis knockout. It was his one prize to my 5, he has 3 energy on the field, 2 on a magnezone, and I promoted my goth. I catcher up emboar, and proceed to draw and pass, essentially locking him, and eventually decking him out due to the energy drought. 2-1

Round 4 vs. ??? w/ Tornadus/Thunderus/Muk/Shaymin
I locked this deck so early that I still have no Idea what he was playing, I open gothita and solosis to his lone grimer, attach and hypnotic gaze to put it to sleep. He top decks Tornadus and benches it, and passes. I candy into both Reuniclus and Gothitelle T2, and oak my hand, Bench some basics, and pass. He then charge up Tornadus and does 80 damage. I proceed to knock-out Tornadus, and sweep the game. 3-1

Round 5 vs. Edmund w/ Ross.dec
Oh how I hate this matchup, this game ended up being decided on the opening flip. I start gothita and solosis to his pichu and phanpy he goes first, attaches and uses playground. I attach to gothita and pass. He gets the plume turn 2 while I am holding 2 candies as well as gothitelle and reuniclus. It’s all downhill from here as he achieves full board control. 3-2.

From here I know that I can’t lose any more games if I want a chance to get into top cut, the pressure is on!

Round 6 vs. ??? w/Magneboar
Not another one! Fortunately, this game isn’t as eventful as the last, I pull off the turn 2 goth, and catcher all of his magnemites, as well as a tepig, and two- shotting a reshiram for my 6 prizes to his 0. 4-2

Round 7: Kenny Britton w/ Ross.dec
This was a very tight game. I was able to get the lock before his vileplume hit the field, and when it did, I was already set up. Something I would like to note is that he played a smoochum for the gothitelle match-up, which severely crippled my performance this game. Luckily I was finally able to get the knockout on smoochum after he had displaced 5 of my 10 energy. I go on a prize spree until it is 1-5 in my favor. He has a SEL in play, and starts using torrent blade to take 2 prizes: my chansey and zekrom, so now I was damage capped with no chance of getting the revenge. However, his Blissey was trapped in the prizes as well, so our benches were a time-bomb ready to go off. He plays seeker, and I am able to pick up the Cleffa with two psychic energy on it, and attach one to gothitelle, making my damage output perfectly over what he could contain, winning the game. 5-2

Round 8: ??? w/ PrimeTime

This game was a mess, he had gotten deck-checked last round and had found out that he didn’t put communication in his list, so he had to replace them with energy. Not to mention, but I did my math wrong and accidently took a prize when I shouldn’t have, which, luckily, was only a single prize penalty (which was the only prize he took the entire game) apparently my math is about as good as Zero’s. The game went about how you would have expected, I got early Goth, and he couldn’t respond. 6-2

Standings are up, and I snagged 17th place with a top 32 cut. I’m currently typing this the night before top cut, so I’m hoping I’ll do well, let’s find out!

DAY 2:

I wake up and head over to the convention center, and wait for an hour before things get underway, which, in all truthfulness, kind of sucked.

Match 1 vs. Wes w/ Typhlosion/ Reshiram/ Mew
Game 1
Crap….. I open gothita to his cyndaquil and he goes first. He plays collector and searches out cynaquil, Cleffa, and a reshiram, retreats, and eeks. I Collector as well, attach, and pass. The next turn he gets out 2 quilavas, and I know I’m in for an uphill battle. I get the lock up either turn 3-4, and then he drops a relicanth. My heart flat out dropped. I knew that this match was probably going to be the end of my run. He proceeds to sweep with mew with a reshiram lost zoned, and I can’t regain my setup to revenge KO. 0-1
Game 2
I open zekrom to his mew. We both attach and pass for a few turns until I have a gothitelle sitting on the bench stuck behind zekrom. He catchers it up and typhlosion locks me. I am unable to attack, half my energy is gone, I haven’t taken a single prize, and time is called. I extended my hand and wished him the best of luck. 0-2

This was my first ever real top cut, as well as the first one for my career as a master, and I am extremely proud of how I did.
