I've only been playing Pokemon tcg for a couple weeks. Online. I made a deck the other day to try out my first real life tourney. limited constructed.
Some trainers I used were from the base set. Computer Search, Switch etc.

I did not know that computer search base set was illegal for use, that is my fault I admit. They were nice enough to let me continue playing without penalty. I did well = )

My question now is, are ALL cards with name changes treated the same way?
Since base set Switch has changed to TRAINER ITEM, does this mean my old switch is illegal in standard format? Can someone also point me in the direction of all the other cards that are banned due to this issue?
Much appreciate it ^_^

*whoops, can someone move this thread to the appropriate sub-forums. sorry for the mistake.

Here's the official list of what older cards are allowed in the standard and expanded formats:

Oftentimes, the reason why certain cards with the same name are not permissible in standard is because there is significant text change. For example, Computer Search is now an ACE-SPEC card. However, this logic doesn't always play out, as there are cards with substantial text changes (see: Super Rod) that are allowed. It can be a little confusing, but those two lists should help you. :)

Like psychup2034 said, rulings are completely subjective. From a reasonable stand point, there is no reason for Base Set Computer Search to be illegal even if its now a Ace Specs. Most older cards are fine, even if they go to different card types, Like Pokemon Center, which completely changes card types.

Switch is fine though so the reprint rules are subjective. Another thing to note is these cards are based on the Japanese card. The Japanese Computer Search card was call "PC Search" and was called Computer Search here in the west. To Japan and their meta, these are two completely different cards. Just though I should say that.

Another thing I should say since you're new to the game's meta, you can have either Professor Juniper OR Professor Sycamore, not both or them in any combination.

Wait, you can't use both professors in one deck?

Cards like Super Rod and Pokemon Center require a reference card for their significant text changes. Computer Search would require a reference if it was made legal. Since you can only play one, there's no reason not to just play the reference copy. It's a completely rationale ruling.

There's a difference between text change and errata. All players are expected to know errata. That's why cards like Pluspower and Rare Candy are legal without a reference. Significant text changes (Pokemon Center, Computer Search) require reference.

Switch's text hasn't significantly changed. All Trainer-Trainer cards from the pre-BW era are understood to be Trainer-Items now. Cards like Vileplume Undaunted are understood to only block Items.

You can't use Sycamore and Juniper in the same deck because having 8 of that effect would be harmful to deck building variance. Having 8 Cheren/Tierno doesn't matter, because you shouldn't be playing 1, let alone 8.

Not playing 1? What do you mean?
He means that Cheren/Tierno are bad cards that you should avoid playing if you can. Having 8 of these cards in a deck, currently wont make the format unhealthy. Having 8 effects that let you discard and draw 7 would turn the game into a even faster 1 or 2 deck game.
