Battlenet Championship Report

The Battlenet Championship 2005 took place on Sunday 31 July and what a tourney it was!! The last stages were the the most intense and competitive I can remember! Playing for some great prizes and local pride certainly made the T4 playoff a memorable finale!
We had 7 rounds of Age Modified Swiss then a T4 cut. Some excellant deck building was evident with Blaze, Dk Draggy, Dk T/tar, Camerupt ex all making a strong showing with some nice rogue decks thrown into the mix as well. Various players made a strong showing with Bruce Kelf, Adam Gadir, Daniel Holland, Shaun B, Justin Kempley, Jeremy Lee, Jamie White, Peter Norton, Sam High, Nigel Sturman and Simon Humphrey all leading the way with strong performances. At the end of 7 rounds we had the T4 cut which had Adam Gadir out in front with Bruce Kelf, Daniel Holland and Shaun B just pipping Jamie White and Jeremy Lee on win/loss record.
In the finals we had Adam Gadir playing a very nice DragTrode deck which consistently set up fast against Bruce Kelf who was playing his new Camerupt ex/Camerupt deck. In the other match we had Daniel Holland playing a lovely rogue Altaria ex/ Altaria/ Swampert deck against Shaun B who went with a Speed DragTrode deck (it was a toss up with Vileplume ex/ Butterfree/ Battle Frontier but he decided on Speed DragTrode ). The finals were contested under matchplay rules and in the first matches both Adam Gadir and Shaun B showed how strong a good Draggy deck still is even with Battle Frontier running around with both of them winning 2-0.
So in the final we had Shaun B up against Adam Gadir and Bruce Kelf playing Daniel Holland in the 3/4 place play off. Some very intense play followed with all 4 players playing their socks off!! Bruce went 1-0 up quickly with Camerupt burning up the field before Daniel came back and leveled it 1-1. In their third match Daniel got the upper hand and kept going to run out a 2-1 winner. In the final it was even closer with Adam and Shaun having a Dk Draggy shoot out! Adam went 1-0 up fairly quickly and looked like he would run out an easy winner but then Shaun rallied and came back steadily to level it 1-1 The third match started with only 10 minutes to go to the 1 hour deadline! This is where the Speed Draggy deck has a slight advantage over a normal Dk Draggy deck because of the speed of set up. With the seconds ticking down Shaun did some clever legal stalling by playing a Rockets Pokeball followed by a Dual Ball and then a Lanette's Netsearch. He then used the Darkness Navigation and Dark Trance poke powers to further run the clock down and with no further time for Adam to come back, knocked out the Dunsparce and claimed the 1 prize he needed to win the match on prizes!!
An excellant tourney was had by all with everyone going home with some Poke goodies including boosters, promos, posters and POP packs with the top 4 players getting a good haul and Shaun B getting the coveted 2005 Battlenet Pokemon Championship trophy!!
Thanks to ALL of our Battlenet Pokemon players for your support! Keep on building and playing those Poke decks!!
