Xatu's poke power allows me to move a special condition to a defending pokemon (doesn't say active). If I move sleep to a benched pokemon how is this handled?

Can a benched pokemon be put to sleep or affected by special conditions? i.e. does poison or burn do damage? Doesn't retreating to bench remove conditions? If a benched pokemon can be affected by special conditions, how would you remove them? Does making active remove? Or would you have to evolve, play double heal, etc?

Does opponent roll for sleep for benched pokemon at end of turns? If active is asleep too, does he/she roll for each?

A Defending Pokemon is, by definition, an Active Pokemon.
The reason that the text gives you a choice is for games played using 2-on-2 rules, where each player has 2 Actives (and a max bench of 4). There are a lot of cards' texts that take that into account.

No Benched Pokemon can ever be affected by a Special Condition.
