that's why you don't see pokemon tcg, video game, etc. commercials during the pokemon anime or movie broadcasts. same with any other cartoon with tie-in merchandise: advertising the toys etc. turns the entire broadcast into a 'commercial'.

This "advertisement blunder" must have happened years ago, as the E-Reader is now defunct, and has been for some time.

Oh no! We don't want them to sell stuff, cos, selling stuff is bad. Making money is bad. Children are being taken advantage of! Someone has to put a stop to it!
The children have no free will and can't just say "no" when told to buy an GameBoy E-Reader...

This is like the 3-4th time it has happened (happening in other places)
PocketMonsters.net I believe has archives of the other times

The FCC rule is condescending and idiotic. Kid sees ad, asks PARENT for said item. Parent can say "yes" or "no".

Another example of the govt becoming the parent and guardian of our kids. BTW, Tomy sponsors lots of shows in Japan and merchandise related to the sponsored show is very common. The kids over there seem just fine to me.
