Welcome to the "Ask the Masters" Forum. This forum has been created to provide a means of getting Official rulings from PUI for Pokémon TCG.
It is for card rulings or game procedure rulings. It is not for tournament or penalty rulings or general questions about how Pokemon USA works.

Most rulings will involve cards from the EX sets forward, but in cases where an older ruling is no longer consistent with the game rules, PUI may choose to clarify the ruling. In general, all the older rulings will carry forward.

Here is how the Forum works:
  1. Check the forum topics carefully to make sure your question has not been posted already.
  2. Title your post, starting with the a category (Trainer/Pokemon Power/Attack/Energy/Etc.) and then the card's name.
  3. Post your question, using examples to make it clear.
  4. To make the posts easier to read, please turn off signatures in this forum.
  5. A representative of PUI may visit the forum and answer the question directly, but more often your questions will be collected on a weekly basis and delivered to PUI for response.
  6. The responses will then be posted as a reply to your initial post, and the post will be locked to indicate that it was answered.
  7. A summary of the week’s rulings will also be posted in the forum, so people will not have to look through all the threads to see each answer individually.
  8. Finally, the weekly rulings will be incorporated into the Rules Compendium
<<< You need to follow the posting procedures above, or your post may be deleted. >>>

You will only be able to post questions in this forum. Replies will be posted by PUI directly, or in cases where the questions are relayed to PUI for response, a member of Team Compendium will post the responses. If you would like to discuss an issue, please use the other forums here at the PokeGym where replies are permitted. You are free to post the same question in both places, so it may be discussed while waiting for an Official response.

In some cases the question being asked may already have been answered, either in a rulebook or in a ruling from PUI. In those cases, a member of Team Compendium will answer the question, and refer to the source of that answer.

We hope this forum is helpful to Players, Judges and TOs. If you have comments or would like to suggest a change in the way it works, send a PM or e-mail to one of the Mods or Admins.

Enjoy!

I would like to add one point out of the guidelines above:

Have a clear title!

One good way to do this is to use your question as a title!

You can add examples/explanation in your post.

If you can't summarize your question as a title, then its probably not too clear.

First, I want to make clear, that if another site has information that we don't have here on the Gym, it's perfectly acceptible to post links to that information in News & Gossip and various other forums. Preferably directly to that info rather than a general link to the site's main address.

However, the Ask the Rules Team forum is a service provided by Team Compendium to the Pokemon TCG community at no charge to anyone. We do it for free, just as we provide access to the Compendium in it's various incarnations totally free of charge.

It would be very easy to charge a subscription fee to the Compendium or some of these services as we are in the unique position of being able to offer these services to the game's community.
But we don't. It's all totally free of charge.

As such, since people asking questions here in the Ask the Rules Team forum are getting a valuable service at no change (official answers to questions that they can depend on using in tournaments, especially the highest level tournaments) I think it's reasonable to ask to not insert links to offsite images into those questions.
It's just rude. "Hey, help me out here. Oh, and here's another site for people to go to other than yours!"

Now, I realize that people are not intentionally being rude, but I've been seeing it a lot lately, so I felt the need to bring it to people's attention.

Link to images on our site in AtRT if you wish, but please, no off-site links in this special forum where we're providing a free service.

Thanks
Pop

What's up with the unanswered questions?

Dear Pokemon players & judges,

Many times you will see a question here that goes unanswered for a time. Why is that?
Most likely we are waiting for the official answer.
As you may or may not know Team Compendium does not create the answers. Our mission is to 1) advocate for questions that need to be answered for players and 2) to publish those answers when we receive them from TPCi.

We endeavor to ONLY provide official answers to questions in this forum. This means that we don't provide any answer in this forum if we don't have an official one.

In fact, leaving a question unanswered in this forum is how we track questions to seek answers from TPCi. Unanswered questions end up on the following list, which we encourage you to use as a reference list of questions that we are working on getting answers for:For discussion on unanswered rulings questions, please see our Cards & Strategies forum.

For rulings on unanswered questions, look to the head judge at your event. The person is the final authority for your tournament. If you have a crucial question, you may wish to bring it up to the head judge at an appropriate time before the event begins.

As noted in the rules, we need to card name.
If you are asking about an attack, even if it's one commonly used, we're not going to go searching through the entire card database to figure out which card had the attack you are asking about.

Giving a valid ruling requires that we read the card first.
We need to know what card to read.

Asking Rulings questions by PM

Sorry, we can't answer rulings questions by PM. We do this as a service for the community, not as private information. Also, as you can imagine, if questions were sent via PM, our PM boxes would fill up rather quickly.

Note that this does not apply to follow up questions asking for a clarification or pointing out a needed correction. Those are always appreciated!
