We have been having breakfast at dave's coffe shack. It is about 15 minutes from the resort. Great food, good prices, rustic aithentic hawaii setting, and a personable staff has made this our favorite breakfast and lunch destination on the big island. The staff in the lobby can give you directions.

If you have a rental car, you can go over to Hilo, about 10 miles south of Kona. Hilo has a lot of restaurants along with KMart and Walmart. Both were great for buying souvenirs, a lot cheaper than buying at the resort. There's also a nice indoor / outdoor flea market with a decent food court, well worth the look.

I think you mean Kialua-Kona is about 10 minutes south of the Kona airport. Because Hilo is actually about 1.5 - 2 hrs away on the East side of the island.
