That seems incorrect. I'd wager they've printed more than nine thousand cards. Although, you should just ask DukeFireBird -- considering he is pursuing a godbook and all.

It doesn't count the reverse/alt holos, Kids WB, Sample, Trainer decks, demo pack, etc. either.
I would love to know how many different Pokemon cards are out there, as I believe we all would.
However even if those who print the Pokemon cards published online complete with scans of every card designed in Pokemon ever printed there would still be doubters thinking they would be holding some ultra-rare cards back, I would be one of those doubters.

OK, is this number of unique cards? Because the absolute authoratative source the Master CD, says that as of Unseen Forces, there are (around) 3688 cards printed. This includes some Trainer reprints across sets, but does not include Jumbo cards, cards which have pictures of actual people who have won Japanese tournaments or the English Worlds cards. It is probably missing some other things I can't think of right now.
So a figure of around 5500 seems like a reasonable update since then. Urgh, we all want a proper figure, I just hate that I don't have a PCL contact to ask these collecting questions on behalf of the collecting community.

Counting unique English cards that came in the booster packs and theme decks, legal for tournament play, from the original Base Set to Arceus, not counting promos, there are a total of 9,246 cards. This includes every first edition, every EX, Lv.X, Shining holo, and every reverse holo in print. To see them, google my user name.

I stand corrected. DJ pointed out to me, confirmed by bulbapedia, the existence of 3 Legendary Collection Non-Holos that appear in two Theme Decks Lava and Turmoil. There are others that I also found in the Master Trainer, Epic Collection, and Thunderstorm Gift Box Decks. I updated the list. Total is 9,255.
