Anyway, he complained about a person in the -10 who recieved a loss for an error. Some people seem to think this was wrong (I happen to agree). Then I pointed out another bad judging scenario; players during Nationals, who shuffled their hands into their decks in error were penalized with a loss. This is, IMO, a penalty much more appropriate for intentional acts. But, I'm not here to post opinion, because this is the ATM forum.
In the thread mentioned above, I made the assertion that what the judges did was against the rules. The fact that they announced before the event began that shuffling hands in error would be punished with a loss does not make it OK. I have read the 2005-2006 POP penalty guidelines and it says that major irreversible errors are punishable with prize penalty. I looked in the compendium to see if there was a ruling that says otherwise and I couldn't find one.
The penalty of loss for an error is too extreme, but that's just my opinion. However, no official ruling was ever given that requires judges to give game losses for major errors. The fact that the judges announced it before Nationals doesn't make it OK- there is no such rule!
I am not posting this because a friend of mine got disqualified (practically, since it was single elim) because of this "rule". I want to see that all the rules are enforced. If there is some rule printed somewhere that says judges are supposed to give losses for an error, please show me. I find it a more than just a little unfair that 500+ people were subject to some made-up rule on the day of Nationals. I am partly motivated by the fact that I think this penalty is a little extreme, but really, I want all the rules enforced. If the penalty guidlines say one thing and the judges do another (without even showing us how what they are doing is legal), that's no good.
EDIT: OK, I had no idea the judges were given orders from POP to apply this rule. Now, if I don't like that rule, I can still do things the way it is written in the POP Penalty guidlines, (for the tournaments I organize/judge) right? Or is this new rule going to be added to the official guidlines?
