Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Japan's time called procedure... why not that way here?

Dogma, you need to give up this fight as you cannot win it. PUI/POP as wonderful as they have been for the game of Pokeomon, they also have a long history of not explaining the decisions that they make. There has never been any reason yet given as to why Battle Roads and City Championships can only have a top 4 cut no matter how big the participation, or why States are limited to top 8 cuts. In the past I have attended City and State Championships that had top 16 cuts, the top cut restrictions were put into place with no reason given for why it was occurring. When a decision is made you just have to accept it as there is no other alternative open to you. If you desire you can keep asking for explanations but you will end up only getting frustrated in the end.

Which is why I keep asking for a contact in PUI, I know I'm derailing this thread, which is why I keep apologising!

The judges can't watch every match...

Stalling in swiss is the problem.

True. The judges need the players to call them over when they are on the wrong end of pace of play issues.

If I was even a little bit convinced that +1 would fix stalling or slow play then I'd be 100% campaigning for the change. But as I've stated frequently +1 will have no impact on unintentioned slow play. Any player who is trying to stall out a game will continue to do so with a +1 scheme becuase they believe that the stall strategy is the only way they can win. +1 may make the payoff for stalling less frequent but the stallers will still try for that payoff.

The best fix for slow play and stalling is to call a judge and ask for the pace to be checked. Make your case such as 15 minutes into the round and you have only had four turns. Hoping that you will get the final turn either from time being called on your turn as now or getting the last turn with Time+1 wont make up for lack of turns for the other 29minutes of the game.

CALL THE JUDGE! CALL EARLY! Dont wait till the last minute, and dont wait till after the game is finished.

The contact info for PUI / POP is located here, on PUI's contact us page, for everyone to see.

If you can't find the specific person to contact through those means, I am sorry, there is just not an option to contact that person directly. However, I have found in the past that if you send in an email to [email protected], it will get directed to the proper person.

Now, not being able to contact specific people may ruffle your feathers, but that is how business is.

Just because you know everyone to contact regarding MtG, does not mean that is possible with PUI.

Not being rude, just explaining the facts of life here.

But +3/+5 turns would abstract the end-game state such that stalling would always appear less lucrative, and likely wouldn't result in lengthening rounds much more than they typically already are at larger events [with the 1 or 2 lingering games that usually end up running 5+ minutes over the time limit with extensions]. Like most players, I've frequently been in situations where I would've taken the game on prizes in 2-3 turns, but ended up losing in sudden death because my opponent was able to win by pulling off a quicker KO. I've also been on the other side of the table, winning illegitimately in sudden death because of the game's inadequate handling of time. Will I take those wins and losses? Sure, because that's how the system is currently mismanaged.

CALL THE JUDGE! CALL EARLY! Dont wait till the last minute, and dont wait till after the game is finished.
Again, -always- calling a judge when time *might* become an issue casts a shadow over the player that does so and relies on the arbitrariness and inconsistency of external personal intervention.

Wow... I have a fair feeling that due to the "Time vs Plox" issue, this year's Grinder may be as crazy and late-lasting as the fabled "'06 Grinder."

Please, no. I remember all the Judges / Staff / Volunteers waiting around for those matches to finish up. Mirror matches were bad that year. But, the players got a nice long lunch if I remember right.

nothing will be that long again. shed-stall v. shed-stall will NOT happen. You will see,

Judge: Time!
Players: Bring Down game.

I definantly agree with the time calling procedure. Even without G&G wrath, it's simply a more fair way to handle the circumstance. As for the seeding, I do NOT agree, every sport played uses seeds in high level competition, it's how things are ran. It also makes it possible to know all of your matchups in order so you have time to contemplate on your strategy (I, for one, do this A LOT).

I agree. I think not using seeding for top cut is poor tournament organizing. It's unprofessional and it decreases the chance of crowning the BEST PLAYER as the winner. If what undoubtly are the tournament's two best players already meet in T32, that's sad. My ideal and dream as a TO is that the two best players ideally shouldn't meet until the final (but of course this can't always happen).

After Norwegian Nationals this year, some Junior Poke-Parents who weren't used to Pokemon TCG tournaments complained about the seeding, how it was harsh for the 16th seed in T16 to meet 1st seed and so on. I couldn't agree in any way. I think it's an excellent system, so thanks to POP and TOM for enforcing it.

Tego, do Japanese players have any complaints about time, or are they generally happy with their rules?

you know what really got me mad, at canadain nas we couldn't use dice as damige markers because people from alberta dont use them so we had to get the damige counters and it makes the game look slopy.

DEFENDERS OF THE STATUS QUO. Missed this thread earlier... been busy. Please see my signature on the bottom. 30 and 1 more turn has been there for a long time.

Judges try, but they can't correct the time issue 100% of the time and shouldn't have to actively judge to resolve this issue. Ian, I wrote about how I did feel that I was victimized by a poor decision by a judge last year at worlds not to give a time extention. The judge is human, I am human, maybe I didnt' deserve a time extention in my situation.

The game would be better if the judge didn't have to make a decision in a Worlds Master match after my opponent needed a judge and translator to explain how a holon tranciever works on his last turn.... I didn't and should not have to call over the head judge to protest the judges decision. After all, maybe he did make the right decision not to grant a time extention....

But maybe it would be nice if the judge didn't have to make a rulling at all.

I work in risk managment, you can't eliminate 100% of risk, but you can reduce risk. By adding 30 and 1, you eliminate a large amount of the stalling issue, do you eliminate it totally, no.

Agreed, and eliminating as much of the stalling issue as possible should be the goal.

They really really just need to ban watches, and not make announcements like "10 MINUTES UNTIL THE END OF ROUND 3!" like that, because that tells them when to stall. It would be better if players never had any indication of how far into the round they were.

You can't necessarily "ban" watches. People are allowed to know what time it is. Not even for matches, just in general. And public knowledge of the time left in a match should also be there IMO.

I would actually have a huge problem if they banned watches or didn't tell us how much time was left. Anyone for example, that is playing in Worlds should be able to strategize. What I mean is, a lot of games won't finish in 30 minutes and you will have to play a different way than you normally do.

Just because someone wants to know how much time is left does not mean they are stalling. There are a lot of games (if not every single one) where I want to know how much time is remaining to plan how I'm going to setup the next X turns to where I can get prizes. With something like Scramble Energy in the format, there are endless plays to be made.

I recall one game in particular this year that I lost on time where I clearly had board control and was going to win in a matter of turns. I didn't wear a watch. That was my mistake. I wish we just had more time overall, this year at least.

Well, banning watches is maybe a no-go, but I REALLY think they shouldn't call how much time is left while the match goes on.

Maybe you don't stall, but when you are losing by 2 prizes, and they say "5 minutes left," you subconsciously try to play faster, whether you are thinking about it or not. You can't protest that, EVERYONE does that, whether they realize it or not. I just think that do to that subconscious thought, they shouldn't say how long is left in the round.

Scizor, in your example, where you are planning out future turns, I think that each moment of the game should be thought as if it is your last. Sure, you can plan out your turns, but you should always keep in mind that all of those future turns might not work out. Wouldn't you always go with that plan anyways? If there was a quicker route for all of the games that was fast, and therefore not reliant on time, you would just take that route anyways. So, you are using time to your advantage in your example anyways, which isn't the intent.
