Jonah and the Wailmer

The sound of his alarm clock had awakened the young boy from his sleep. The young boy’s name is Jonah and that day was a very special day for him. He didn’t need the alarm clock to wake him that day, because it was his 10th birthday. The day all kids in his town look forward to more than any other.

Like all kids in his home town, when you turn 10 you get to decide if you want to become a Pokémon training or go to another area of study and this was an easy question for Jonah to answer. Jonah had dreamed of becoming a trainer ever since he saw his first Pokémon. Even though he probably saw one earlier in life, coming from a family of trainers, he remembered being 5 years old and staying with his Uncle and meeting Blaziken.

His father and uncle where both trainers, along with many other members of his family, and always bring Jonah along with them to tournaments and training events. He loved watching as his Uncle’s fire type Pokémon would spill out clouds of bright flames, as the air crackled with heat and how the defending Pokémon would take damage turn after turn after being burned.

His father trained water type Pokémon, although they kept his father near the top of the world rankings and won several major events, they where never very interesting to watch. Splashing water here, spraying mist there and occasionally sending a wave at there opponents. It always looked more like they were giving the other Pokémon a bath than trying to knock them out.

At an early age Jonah realized how lucky he was that his birthday fell in the beginning of spring. Most kids had to wait months after turning 10 to receive their Pokémon from the town Professor, but Jonah only had to wait three weeks before he found out who his first Pokémon would be.

As the day approached for Jonah and his family to go see Professor Evergreen and receive his Pokémon, he could not stop asking his father for hints. “Is it a Torchic? Is it a Charmander? Is it a Torkoal? Come on Dad, give me a hint!”

“Jonah, all of those Pokémon you named are fine starter Pokémon, but I think you will be very happy with the selection the Professor and I have made for you.” His father replied each time he asked for the name.

As the door bell announced the arrival of a guest, his father sprang up from his chair and thought to himself, “Saved by the bell”.

Jonah ran for the door ahead of his father, he knew who the guest was, “Uncle Peter!” Jonah jumped up in to his uncle’s arms.

“Well, hello there young man, good to see you also.” His uncle responded as he returned the hug.

Jonah released his uncle from his hug and slid down to the floor, “Today I am going to get my first Pokémon and become a great trainer like you and father.”

“Is that a fact? I guess I’ll have to start training my Pokémon extra hard to prepare to face you at my gym then.” Uncle Peter then turned to his older brother and shook his hand, “Good morning John, I see he probably has not slept in weeks waiting for this day.”

“Neither have I, Peter,” chuckled Jonah’s father. “Well, I guess we should get heading over to the professor’s lab. Jonah say goodbye to your mother and lets get going.” With that last goodbye being said, Jonah, along with his father and uncle, began the walk over to the professor’s lab.

The sun shone brightly in the summer sky as they made their way to the lab. Jonah’s head kept looking left and right, up and down, he could hardly contain his enthusiasm at the thought that one of those wonderful Pokémon he saw in the trees and in the grass could be like the Pokémon he would be allowed to train and would go on adventures with.

As they approached the front door to the lab another young boy and his father came out, the young boy was holing a Pokéball and look as if he would never be able to stop smiling. “Daddy, I can’t believe you chose Magby for me to raise! This is the coolest day ever.”

Jonah sprinted ahead of his father and uncle and grabbed the door knob. The door swung open and he ran down the hallway towards the Professor’s main laboratory. As he made his way through the archway that led to the large laboratory he stopped dead in his tracks. Professor Evergreen was standing next to a table with a shinny new Pokéball on it.

“Good morning young man, I am so happy to see you here. Oh, I see you brought your father and uncle along with you, good morning to you two also.” The Professor shook the hands of the two men that trailed Jonah into the laboratory. “Well today is the day that young Jonah gets to decide to accept the responsibility of training the young Pokémon we have for him in this Pokéball or he may go to school to study another skill.” He bent slightly at his waist so that his face was closer to Jonah’s, “which will it be?”

He barely got the last syllable out when Jonah shouted, “I want to be a trainer!!”

Professor Evergreen smiled, and tried to act surprised at the youngster’s answer. “Very good then, here is you Pokéball. Remember that the role of a trainer is to train your Pokémon. Battling other trainers is for training purposes only and not for fame. If you remember that then you will become a famous trainer anyways. Take good care of your new friend.” He then shook Jonah’s hand and handed him the Pokéball. “Go ahead and call out your Pokémon.”

Jonah’s fingertips touched the surface of the Pokéball for nearly a second before he shouted, “Pokémon, come out and meet your new trainer!”

The air seemed to fill excitement as the Pokéball opened and shot forth a beam of light towards a tank of water just behind the Professor’s table. As the glow faded away a young Wailmer was in its place. Professor Evergreen was the first to speak, “Jonah, your father and I agree that you will be perfectly suited to train Wailmer here to be a wonderful addition to your family gym.”

“I was hoping to get a fire type Pokémon like my uncle has, they are so cool.” Jonah’s shoulders slumped as the realization that he was going to have to train a boring Wailmer settled into his brain. He turned around and looked at his father, “I mean Dad that your water type are neat and all, but I really wanted to start with a fire type and maybe get water type later on. Can’t we exchange Wailmer for a Magby like Jarrod got before me?”

“Son, there is a special connection you will always have with your first Pokémon, and Wailmer will be a great partner and friend for you as you learn to be a trainer.” Jonah’s father took a hold of the Pokéball and recalled Wailmer. “Now let’s go home and I will tell of all the wonderful things you will be able to do with Wailmer so you have things to look forward to.” He took Jonah by the shoulder and led him out of the lab, “Thank you Professor.” He stated as they left.

As the trio got outside, Jonah and dad said goodbye to his uncle as they parted ways to go home. Jonah gave his uncle a hug and just then he felt his uncle hand him something, as he pulled away he saw he had another Pokéball in his hand. “That’s a little something from me to you” responded his uncle. “Go ahead and call it out.”

“Pokémon, come out and meet your new trainer!” Yelled Jonah, with a small sense of Déjà vu, again the air crackled as a stream of light shot out of the Pokéball. This time the light stopped on the ground instead of a pool of water and as the light faded there stood a Numel. “Thank you Uncle Peter, this is the best gift, a fire type Pokémon.”

Jonah’s father gave his brother a cross stare, “that is a great gift. Now Jonah you will be responsible for training and raising two Pokémon, do you think you can handle it?”

“Of course I can!”

“Numel, use singe!” Jonah shouted as his Pokémon ran towards a practice dummy in his father’s gym. The small creature ran on four legs and slid as it put on its brakes, then a cloud of hot gas poured from its nose. The practice dummy never stood a chance.

Jonah’s father began to clap as he walked into the training room he had set up for Jonah to train his two new Pokémon in. “Wonderful use of that attack Jonah, you and Numel are working very well together. How is Wailmer doing?”

“He’s fine; he is over in the pool.”

“How are his moves progressing?”

“There fine.” Jonah turned his head in an attempt to hide his eyes from his father.

“Jonah, it’s been three months since you received your first Pokémon and the only one I ever see you training is Numel. If you are planning to enter the Junior Trainers Tournament next weekend, Wailmer will need some practice time also.”

“But dad, all Wailmer can do is splash water around. I am trying to get Numel to learn ember, it’s such a cool move.”

“Jonah you’re missing the point of being a trainer. You need to learn how to take simple moves and make them useful, you never know when they are going to be needed.” Jonah’s father leads him over to the tank that Wailmer has made his home. “Look at Wailmer. Do you know why the Professor and I chose him to be your first Pokémon?” Jonah shrugs his shoulder, “Because Wailmer’s are one of the most loyal Pokémon and he will do whatever you need him to. Take care of Wailmer and he will take care of you.”

As his father walked away, Jonah look into Wailmer’s eyes. “Thank you for being a friend Wailmer, but I have to continue to train Numel for now. I will train you another day.” And then Jonah walks back to where Numel was waiting to burn up some more training dummies.

“Treeko is unable to battle; Jonah and Numel are the winners.” The crowd erupted into cheers as Jonah gave Numel a big hug after their match.

“Thank you Numel, you are a great partner. One more win and we will become the winners of the Junior Trainer’s Challenge!” Jonah held out his hand and recalled Numel back into the Pokéball. “Take a rest until the match is ready to begin friend.”

As Jonah made his way over to his father, his father was waiting to give his son some coaching advice. “Great Job out there Jonah. You and Numel are working fine as a team out there. Although you might have had an easier time against Charmander if you used Wailmer.”

“I know dad, but Numel is taking care of things just fine.”

“Sometimes winning is not everything. If you consistently use the wrong Pokémon in the wrong situation, eventually you will lose. Remember Wailmer can take a hit form a stronger Pokémon a lot better than Numel can and he can easily put down water type Pokémon.” Jonah’s father reaches for a drink for his son. “Your next match is against Jarrod who uses a Torkoal and a Magby, if you start with Wailmer you may be able to win without even bringing out Numel and risk getting him hurt. Since you have been using Numel all day, his attacks are getting weaker and weaker.”

“Ladies and Gentlemen; The final match of the Junior Trainer’s Challenge is about to begin. Trainers to the stadium!” A voice announced over the PA system.

Jonah took off into a sprint towards the stadium, “don’t worry dad, I will make you proud.”

“Jonah, it looks like Numel has about had it and Magby has barely even started to get warmed up.” Jarrod taunted his opponent from across the battle stadium.

“We’ll see about that. Numel, use singe!” As Jonah yelled out his attack orders to Numel a puff of smoke barely come out of the exhausted Pokémon, trying to please his trainer. “What’s the matter Numel? Use singe before Magby can attack again.”

“Ha ha ha ha, you call that an attack? Magby use ember!” The small red Pokémon sucked in it’s breath to fill it’s little lunges as much as possible, then released a cloud of fire form it’s mouth. As the flames struck Numel, the camel Pokémon fell over and closed his eyes. He had nothing left to give his trainer for this battle and waited to be taken home in his Pokéball.

“No, Numel you can’t blackout now, how am I going to win?” Jonah fell to his knees and put out his hand to recall his friend. “Numel return.”

“Numel is unable to continue. Jonah is down to one Pokémon and Jarrod still has two.” The announcer informed the audience.

Jonah’s father rushed to the edge of the grandstand railing to shout words of encouragement to his son. “Jonah, Wailmer can easily take out these fire type Pokémon if you would only give him a chance. He is well rested and ready to battle.”

“What lame Pokémon are you going to use now, Jonah? Your dad can’t be serious if he thinks some pitiful Wailmer is going to beat my Pokémon.” Jarrod challenged Jonah.

“Alright, at least I can go down fighting. Wailmer I choose you.” A hole in the stadium floor opens up to receive the light from Jonah’s Pokéball as Wailmer is materialized. The whale Pokémon splashes into the water and sprays water into the air, announcing he is ready to battle.

“Wailmer use bubble beam now!” a stream of bubbles shoots forth from Wailmer’s mouth towards Magby.
“Magby use ember!” as Jarrod’s Pokémon sprays his fire toward Wailmer it is put out by the bubbles racing towards him. The force of the bubbles knock the small red Pokémon over, tumbling head over heals.

The judge raises his arm, “Magby is unable to continue, Wailmer’s bubble beam was super effective against Magby. The match is now even, one Pokémon remaining for each trainer."

"Magby, return." Jarrod opens his Pokéball and recalls his fallen Pokémon. "You got lucky Jonah, but there is no way your little fish can beat Torkoal." Jarrod grins as he holds out his second Pokéball, "Torkoal, lets finish the job." As the light form his Pokéball dims to reveal the small turtle Pokémon, Jarrod continues his attack, "Torkoal, use flaming wheel!"

The spinning wheel of fire that comes out of the pokémon’s mouth makes it way towards Wailmer Jonah begins to worry about dealing with the loss this will result in. The air sizzles with hot steam as Wailmer is struck by the wheel, but through the mist, the crowd sees that Wailmer is barley effected by it. "Wailmer, you’re still awake!" Jonah is amazed by his pokémon’s ability to withstand the force of such an awesome attack.

"Jonah, have Wailmer attack while your opponent is confused!" His father coaches from the stands.

"Wailmer, use hydro pump and take out that Pokémon!" Wailmer dives down in the pool of water and gains speed as he heads toward the surface. The dark blue water Pokémon emerges from the water and seams to float in the air as it opens its mouth. A large cone of water pours towards the helpless Torkoal.

“Torkoal is unable to continue,” sounds the voice of the announcer. “Jonah and Wailmer are the 2007 Junior Trainer Challenge Champions!”

“Wailmer, use bubble beam!” Jonah commands his Pokémon during a training session. “Very good work, now Numel follow up with singe!” the two attacks work together in perfect tandem.

Jonah turns at the sound of clapping coming from behind him, his father stands there smiling. “You see how much more effective you can be when your Pokémon work as a team?”

Jonah smiles back at his father as he gives him a hug. “Thank you dad, thank you Wailmer.”
